Connecting a MongoDB Atlas cluster to 2 AWS VPCs - amazon-web-services

I have 2 AWS accounts -- we'll call them AWSDev and AWSProd. I also have 2 MongoDB Atlas clusters under a single MongoDB account. I set up a Peer Connection for AWSProd's default VPC and added an entry into the AWSProd Route Table. Works great.
Now I'm setting up the peer connection for AWSDev's default VPC. The peer connection appears to be active, but my Lambda function is unable to connect.
I'm thinking that maybe the issue is that both my AWS VPCs run on the same CIDR block. See the green highlight in the following image:
Is this a problem? Will this mean MongoDB Atlas can only communicate with the first one because it's own routing tables can't differentiate between them?
Other things I've done to diagnose:
I ensured the lambda is set up for my default VPC by setting it to run on my VPC's subnets and under the security group.
I verified the mongodb connection string is correct including the user and password.
I'm thinking about creating a new VPC in my AWSDev account and redeploying things to there to see if that resolves it. Any other ideas?

VPC Peering cannot use CIDR blocks which overlap:

It's also not possible to change or modify the IP address range of an existing virtual private cloud (VPC) or subnet. However, you can do one of the following:
Add an additional IPv4 CIDR block as a secondary CIDR to your VPC. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/vpc/latest/userguide/working-with-vpcs.html#add-ipv4-cidr

Create a new VPC with your preferred CIDR block and then migrate the resources from your old VPC to the new VPC (if applicable).

Connecting to an RDS Instance that is on VPC

I am trying to connect to my AWS RDS Mariadb instance that I am hosting on us-east/ohio from my local machine. I am trying to avoid making the instance publicly available but I am struggling to get this connection to work. Right now I am trying to connect from my local machine but eventually, I hope to host a nodejs server to talk to it on a static ip.
The setup I have now is the following:
A single VPC that my RDS is connected to which includes a CIDR that contains my public ip x.y.z.0/24
A route table which includes my public ip to connect to local
Network ACL inbound and outbound rule number 1 is to allow All TCP from 0.0.0.0/0
The Default security group which also allows all inbound and outbound traffic
A VPC endpoint attached to the RDS service
With all of this set up I figured it should allow anyone that has the DNS name of my VPC endpoint to talk to my RDS instance but I can not get a connection to my instance. I have used every DNS name associated with my endpoint and every single one of them times out when I try to sign into the database. I have been fumbling with this for days and would like to get past this point of initial setup.
Things possibly to note:
The Network ACL comes with a default rule of "*" deny all traffic. I do not know what order that rule is evaluated. I chose 1 for my rule of allowing all but I have also tried rule 100. Neither seems to work.
I know my RDS instance is on us-east-2a and I have made sure to add the us-east-2a subnet to my VPC endpoint. Using the DNS name that includes that at one point was giving me network unreachable for a little bit before I realized the subnet ID I chose was not the default which just gave me a timeout again.
I am trying to use DBeaver to connect to the VPC endpoint but I have also used the console command mysql -h vpce-<random characters>-<VPC ID>-us-east-2a.rsa.us-east-2.vpce.amazonaws.com -u admin -p and gotten the same timeout

Alternative to AWS's Security groups in GCP?

Is there an alternative to AWS's security groups in the Google Cloud Platform?
Following is the situation which I have:
A Basic Node.js server running in Cloud Run as a docker image.
A Postgres SQL database at GCP.
A Redis instance at GCP.
What I want to do is make a 'security group' sort of so that my Postgres SQL DB and Redis instance can only be accessed from my Node.js server and nowhere else. I don't want them to be publically accessible via an IP.
What we do in AWS is, that only services part of a security group can access each other.
I'm not very sure but I guess in GCP I need to make use of Firewall rules (not sure at all).
If I'm correct could someone please guide me as to how to go about this? And if I'm wrong could someone suggest the correct method?
GCP has firewall rules for its VPC that work similar to AWS Security Groups. More details can be found here. You can place your PostgreSQL database, Redis instance and Node.js server inside GCP VPC.
Make Node.js server available to the public via DNS.
Set default-allow-internal rule, so that only the services present in VPC can access each other (halting public access of DB and Redis)
As an alternative approach, you may also keep all three servers public and only allow Node.js IP address to access DB and Redis servers, but the above solution is recommended.
Security groups inside AWS are instance-attached firewall-like components. So for example, you can have a SG on an instance level, similar to configuring IP-tables on regular Linux.
On the other hand, Google Firewall rules are more on a Network level. I guess, for the level of "granularity", I'd say that Security Groups can be replaced to instance-level granularity, so then your alternatives are to use one of the following:
firewalld
nftables
iptables
The thing is that in AWS you can also attach security groups to subnets. So SG's when attached to subnets, are also kind of similar to google firewalls, still, security groups provide a bit more granularity since you can have different security groups per subnet, while in GCP you need to have a firewall per Network. At this level, protection should come from firewalls in subnets.
Thanks #amsh for the solution to the problem. But there were a few more things that were required to be done so I guess it'll be better if I list them out here if anyone needs in the future:
Create a VPC network and add a subnet for a particular region (Eg: us-central1).
Create a VPC connector from the Serverless VPC Access section for the created VPC network in the same region.
In Cloud Run add the created VPC connector in the Connection section.
Create the PostgreSQL and Redis instance in the same region as that of the created VPC network.
In the Private IP section of these instances, select the created VPC network. This will create a Private IP for the respective instances in the region of the created VPC network.
Use this Private IP in the Node.js server to connect to the instance and it'll be good to go.
Common Problems you might face:
Error while creating the VPC Connector: Ensure the IP range of the VPC connector and the VPC network do not overlap.
Different regions: Ensure all instances are in the same region of the VPC network, else they won't connect via the Private IP.
Avoid changing the firewall rules: The firewall rules must not be changed unless you need them to perform differently than they normally do.
Instances in different regions: If the instances are spread across different regions, use VPC network peering to establish a connection between them.

Can't connect to a public accessible AWS RDS

I was running a serverless web application on a lambda inside a VPC, and connecting to a Aurora-MySQL RDS instance, with inbound rules to allow traffic from the security group of the lambda
The connection was working fine, however, quite often the lambda cold start was giving me a timeout.
After some research, I found out that running a lambda on a VPC brings an additional cost on startup and I saw the recommendation in more than 1 place to avoid using lambda on a VPC except if you strictly need to access some resource in the VPC.
So, I decided to move my RDS to a publicly accessible instance, so my lambda can access it over the internet and remove the lambda from the VPC.
So, I changed the RDS Public accessibility option to Yes and edited the security group to allow inbound connection from any IP.
I have also removed the VPC from the lambda, so the lambda is not running on a VPC anymore
I thought it was gonna be enough.
But then my lambda started failing to connect to the database
I tried to connect using my local client, again, failure
tried pinging to the hostname, got request timeouts
After digging a bit into it, I found that my DB instance subnet group having some private subnets might be a problem (?)
So, I have created a new subnet group with only public subnets, and tried to move my db instance to the new subnet group... but got this message:
You cannot move DB instance my-instance to subnet group my-new-group. The specified DB subnet group and DB instance are in the same VPC.
Ok, it seems that I can't move to a different subnet in the same VPC, I started trying to create a new VPC, but it doesn't seem to be right and I'm sure there is something else I am missing here.
I also read about Network ACL, and thought that this might be the problem, but my rules seem to be fine, with the default rule to allow any traffic (and the rule * to DENY)

My VPC has internet access (I can access internet services from it, not an issue), I have an Internet Gateway and NAT Gateway in place.
I'm using Zappa for the lambda deployment, which takes care of creating a keep-warm function... however, I know that concurrent requests could still be an issue
The issue with VPC in lambda is that it can add 10s on the cold start, which is a no-deal for some of my use cases:

Besides enabling "public access" on your RDS instance, you need to enable internet to the VPC using an internet gateway. After you attach it to the VPC, you need to route the data from the database subnets to the internet gateway. Check here
But I would not advise you expose your database like this. If you are having issues with lambda cold start, you should create an event to keep it warm.
Things you need to is :
Create new subnet group with default VPC
assign two subnet for availability zone
then modify your RDS instance
change subnet group to newly created group
mark "Publicly accessibility" to Yes.
Check your VPC is using internet gateway or not.
Check lambda security group whether it's open for outbound connection for Database port is not available or not.
No need to create different VPC for RDS. Use Default VPC.
As recommended by #stargazer try to not to expose publicly or out of VPC. Its works well inside VPC.

How can I get kubernetes resources to succesfully connect to an RDS instance in another vpc

Background: I have a kubernetes cluster set up in one AWS account that needs to access data in an RDS MySQL instance in a different account and I can't seem to get the settings correct to allow traffic to flow.
What I've tried so far:
Setup a peering connection between the two VPCs. They are in the same region, us-east-1.
Created Route table entries in each account to point traffic on the corresponding subnet to the peering connection.
Created a security group in the RDS VPC to allow traffic from the kubernetes subnets to access MySql.
Made sure DNS Resolution is enabled on both VPC's.
Kubernetes VPC details (Requester)
This contains 3 EC2's (looks like each has its own subnet) that house my kubernetes cluster. I used EKS to set this up.
The route table rules I set up have the 3 subnets associated, and point the RDS VPC CIDR block at the peering connection.
RDS VPC details (Accepter)
This VPC contains the mysql RDS instance, as well as some other resources. The RDS instance has quite a few VPC security groups assigned to it for access from our office IP's etc. It has Public Accessibility set to true.
I repeated the route table setup (in reverse) and pointed back to the K8s VPC subnet / peering connection.
Testing
To test the connection, I've tried 2 different ways. The application that needs to access mysql is written in node, so I just wrote a test connector and example query and it times out.
I also tried netcat from a terminal in the pod running in the kubernetes cluster.
nc -v {{myclustername}}.us-east-1.rds.amazonaws.com 3306
Which also times out. It seems to be trying to hit the correct mysql instance IP though so I'm not sure if that means my routing rules are working right from the k8s vpc side.
DNS fwd/rev mismatch: ec2-XXX.compute-1.amazonaws.com != ip-{{IP OF MY MYSQL}}.ec2.internal
I'm not sure what steps to take next. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.
Side Note: I've read thru this Kubernetes container connection to RDS instance in separate VPC
I think I understand what's going on there. My CIDR blocks do not conflict with the default K8s ips (10.0...) so my problem seems to be different.
I know this was asked a long time ago, but I just ran into this problem as well.
It turns out I was editing the wrong AWS routing table! When I ran kops to create my cluster, it created a new VPC with its own routing table but also another routing table! I needed to add the peer connection route to the cluster's routing table instead of the VPC's Main routing table.

EC2 instance can't access to elasticache

As the title suggests, I'm struggling to connect to my elasticache instance via my EC2 instance. I have a orm to connect to redis in my EC2 instance that was just failing on my logs, so I sshed into my EC2 instance to try to manually connect to the redis instance and got a timeout:
Could not connect to Redis at <redis uri>: Connection timed out
They're in different VPC's (the elasticache instance and the EC2 instance), but in my elasticache instance's security group, I have a custom TCP inbound rule at port 6379 from any source.

You setup the security rule, but did you setup the VPC peering properly:
A VPC peering connection is a networking connection between two VPCs
that enables you to route traffic between them using private IP
addresses. Instances in either VPC can communicate with each other as
if they are within the same network. You can create a VPC peering
connection between your own VPCs, or with a VPC in another AWS account
within a single region.

After you create VPC Peer connection, you also need to modify routing table.
Keep in mind that you need to modify BOTH of the routing tables.
Also you need to add CIDR of the local VPC.
It can be confusing which is "local" VPC and which is "target".
In my case, the local VPC contained EC2 instances that needed Redis database in other VPC. After creating peer connection in this format, I needed to do two things:
edit routing table for both local and target VPC.
edit security group of Redis database to accept connections from local VPC.
If set accordingly, you should be able to connect from EC2 instance at local VPC to Redis database in target VPC.
