Is there a way to make MessageBox not freeze the application? - c++

I'm currently experimenting around with message boxes using the Windows.h module in C++ and I'm curious if there is a way to make the function not hang/freeze the application.
I tried using the MessageBox function and it just hangs/freezes the application until there is user input to the messagebox

The Windows API function MessageBox will create a modal dialog box, which means that the owner window gets disabled and the function will only return as soon as the dialog box is closed.
If you don't want the owner window to get disabled and want the function to return immediately, you should instead create a modeless dialog box using the functions CreateDialog or CreateDialogIndirect.

Another option besides using CreateDialog would be to create a secondary thread and use MessageBox with a NULL hWnd argument.

Capturing the window handle of a newly created modal dialog

I'm using and improving on an open source MFC work-alike library called FFC. Sometimes the library associates the wrong window handle to a dialog object, which means the C++ object can't be found later when the correct handle is looked up. In particular, this is happening when the application opens its root window, which is a dialog that it opens with a call to DoModal.
In its DoModal function, the FFC library uses a... "surprising" way to attach the handle to the dialog object. It stashes the "this" pointer in a global variable and hooks a function to be called on all window messages before calling the DialogBox function. This hook function it registered in term assumes the handle from the first message it receives is the handle for the window in the global variable, and attaches that handle to it.
Sometimes, this works. Often - and I don't know if it's because of intrusive things done by the McAfee scanner on my work computer, or because my program starts from a console window, or something else - many unrelated messages will be captured before a message actually meant for the modal dialog comes through.
At first I thought it was because FFC wasn't making sure the message it looks for is "WM_CREATE". I added this check, but it didn't fix the problem. Turns out one or more of the spurious messages are also WM_CREATE messages! Before it gets the one for the real dialog, the first WM_CREATE it receives is a handle for a window with blank window text and rectangle 0,0-0,0.
So is this really the correct or canonical way to get the handle for a modal dialog? It seems unreliable. (Note that because the dialog is modal, you can't use the return value from CreateWindowEx because the DialogBox function doesn't return until the modal dialog is closed.) Is this really how MFC does it? Is there a better way? Could I associate some data with the dialog or look for data that should be associated with it to make sure I have the right window handle? (For instance checking the template parameter passed to the dialog box call, if I can get that back from the handle somehow.)
I am sure this is published in books, but MFC sets a windows hook (WH_CBT) and then looks for the HCBT_CREATEWND code in the hook to marry the C++ object to the HWND.

Overriding another windows WindowProc in C++

I'm working on a personal project where I need to invoke my function after an menu item in another process is clicked.
I'm using
BOOL enumeratingWindowsSucceeded = ::EnumWindows(enumWindowsProc, NULL);
to retrieve the handles to all of the currently open windows on my computer and using
GetSystemMenu(...)
and
AppendMenu(...)
to add an item into all the window's title bar context menu.
Now the problem is when the menu item is clicked in the other window's context menu, my program does not know about it.
Is there a way to override the WindowsProc of another window so that my process can execute some piece of code? Or is there a better way to make the menu item communicate with my program?

MFC modal dialog close error

I have a strange error and spend hours in the debugger without finding a solution.
(But it helped me to fixed another error that you should never call EndDialog from a WM_KICKIDLE task).
My problem is that i have a main window and a modeless dialog window wich raises a modal subdialog window. When the subdialog window is closed. The modeless dialog window turns itself into a modal window. My code really does leave the modal loop. And if i close the now modal window it behaves like an invisble modal window is active, meaning no interaction is possible anymore.
When i only run a modal dialog on top of the main window it is closed fine.
BTW: The main window is not the one available view CWinApp::m_pMainWnd but a new create FrameWindow. I hide the p_MainWnd and use it as an invisible message only window. From some comments and my debugging session i found that the pMainWnd has some special meaning but i could figure what exactly it has to do with modal windows (there is an undocumented "CWinApp::DoEnableModeless" for example).
EDIT: I'm posting a WM_CLOSE to the dialog and then use EndDialog(0) from the OnClose() handler to exit the modal state. I also tried to use EndDialog(0) directly. There is no difference between this two methods.
When MFC creates a modal dialog, it makes it modal by disabling the windows above it. The code that reenables those windows occurs when the dialog ends normally with a call to EndDialog. If anything prevents that code from running, the other windows will be locked out.
Modeless dialogs are a different beast, and there's a note specifically in the EndDialog documentation warning you to use DestroyWindow instead.
Maybe this is justifiable but I have a question:
why are you using hidden window? Was it created as message only window (passing HWND_MESSAGE as a parent handle and Message as a class) or you just call it message only?
OK, a little more info about MFC and dialogs.
MFC does not use Windows modal dialog. It always creates modeless dialog; either Create or DoModal call in turn ::CreateDlgIndirect windows API.
Modeless dialof rely on the main window message dispatch, while modal calls RunModalLoop that is similar to MFC window message pupmp (not a message loop).
It runs in the main thread of execussion without freezing because it allows for idle processing (calls OnIdle).
How do you dismiss the modeless dialog? As Mark pointed you should use DestroyWindow.
As for m_pMainWnd, MFC framework uses it extensively to determine may things that control main window behavior. By changing it you may have created the behavior you experience.
Did you set the value to a newly created frame you treat as a main window?
What kind of MFC application is it? SDI or MDI?
Would it be possible to create test app to duplicate this behavior and post it somewhere for download?
By the way, you do not have to be concern about DoEnableModeless, since it does not do anything but calls hook (COleFrameHook type) that is spasly used, unless you are trying to implement some functionality using OLE or ActiveX or you are trying to marry MFC and .NET Windows Forms.
In conclusion if your (or third party code uses this hook, I would suggest checking the code in the COleFrameHook class.

Hide a CDialogImpl dialog when user cancels

Using a CDialogImpl derived class as a dialog-based WTL/ATL app, I want to hide the main window when the user clicks the upper right "X" button (or presses Esc or Alt+F4).
Currently the "X" closes the dialog and ends the application.
I want to change this behaviour and only hide the dialog box instead of closing it. Is this possible?
I'm not sure if ATL/WTL provides some wrapper for this but in WinAPI, the function you are looking for is ShowWindow, which you would invoke as so:
ShowWindow(hwnd, SW_HIDE);
If you want this to happen when the application is closed, the message you need to handle is WM_CLOSE.
After a quick search, MSDN reveals CWindow::ShowWindow, which is the wrapper I mentioned earlier.

Create two windows in one application?

It might be a simple question, but I don't know where to start the search for the answer. How do I create two individual windows interface in one application using native winapi? Do I put two CreateWindow() functions using same HINSTANCE? What if I want a login screen windows and the content page such that login screen comes first, and after I press the button, the login screen is destroyed, and the content page appears. How do I do such trick?
I was thinking of using DestroyWindow and then CreateWindow inside the button click message. However, this would mean the main while loop (for translate/dispatch msg) in WinMain will exit its loop and cause the whole program to exit. Another way is to pre-create it in WinMain, but how would I notify the WinMain if the button was clicked and enter the second loop instead of exiting the program?
You're over-thinking it. To create two windows, call CreateWindow twice. It's just that simple.
Calling DestroyWindow does not cause your program to exit its message pump. Calling PostQuitMessage is what does that. So don't do that.
When the button is clicked, destroy the one window and create the other. There are no tricks. The message pump delivers messages to all windows (unless you're doing it wrong by explicitly requesting messages for one window, but you shouldn't do that).
