LNK2019 with a sample from MSDN - c++

Tried to copy the code from the .cpp file in Common File Dialog Sample got some LNK2019. It seems like a problem with the linking of 3 functions.
Here are the errors:

I changed their code in the original files I downloaded from the github and it worked just fine. I tried to copy it to another project and it just won't work (the LNK2019 errors)

I thought I'd provide a sort of meta-answer to this: how did Jerry know what libraries you need to link with? And, as ever, the answer lies in the documentation.
First of all, let's take a look at those linker errors (I've cut them down a bit for clarity, using templates usually tends to lead to verbose / hard to read error messages):
Unresolved symbol __imp_TaskDialog referenced in function <irrelevant>
Unresolved symbol __imp_PSGetPropertyDescriptionListFromString referenced in function <irrelevant>
Unresolved symbol QISearch referenced in function <irrelevant>
First up, you can ignore the __imp_ bit. This just tells you that the function is imported from a DLL. So that leaves us with the following unresolved references:
TaskDialog
PSGetPropertyDescriptionListFromString
QISearch
So, time to go Googling.
The documentation for TaskDialog is here, and if you scroll down to the 'requirements' section at the bottom of the page you will see:
Library Comctl32.lib
So that's nailed that one (note that capitalisation doesn't matter here, I don't know why Microsoft document this stuff in such a weird way).
In a similar vein, we can easily discover that PSGetPropertyDescriptionListFromString is in Propsys.lib, and QISearch is in Shlwapi.lib. End of story.
I hope that shows you how it's done. Every Windows developer needs to understand how to do this and how to find and read the (extensive) documentation that Microsoft provide in general.

Add Custom Banner to Namespace Extension

Windows explorer has the ability to show a custom banner when doing a search and indexing is disabled:
I would like to display a similar banner in a custom namespace extension with a custom message and custom link handler. Is there an namespace extension interface I can implement that will allow me to provide this functionality? I have searched for various terms in the namespace extension documentation , but I can't figure out the correct terms to use.
That feature is not documented by Microsft. And i found how to show information bar from namespace extension.

C++ - DirectWrite: Load font from file at runtime

I'm trying to load a font from a file at runtime and display it with DirectWrite. The following code should initialize a IDWriteTextFormat object with that font:
hr = pDWriteFactory->CreateTextFormat(
L"Font Family", // Font family name
NULL, // Font collection (NULL sets it to use the system font collection)
// Somehow, a custom font collection should be used here, but I don't know how to do that
DWRITE_FONT_WEIGHT_REGULAR,
DWRITE_FONT_STYLE_NORMAL,
DWRITE_FONT_STRETCH_NORMAL,
16.0f,
L"en-us",
&pTextFormat // IDWriteTextFormat object
);
It works perfectly with system fonts but I don't know how to load a custom font file. I would appreciate any examples on how to achieve that.
What I tried so far:
• I read this article and this question on Stackoverflow but I don't see where one should pass the file path of the font file (therefore, I completely failed to implement any of the code provided on those two pages)
• I also read this article but if I'm right, it has nothing to do with DirectWrite (?) (I tried to implement the AddFontResourceEx-method, but to no avail)
• Finally, the answer to this question suggested using ResourceFontContext::CreateFontCollection could solve the problem but after reading this page (it's in German but the screenshot is in English) I believe that it can only be used with fonts embedded as resources (which is not an option in my case)
Sure, it's possible to do that. You'll need to:
implement IDWriteFontCollectionLoader interface in your code;
You should also implement IDWriteFontFileEnumerator obviously, but this should be trivial.
register loader with the factory using RegisterFontCollectionLoader
create a collection using CreateCustomFontCollection and same factory;
pass it to CreateTextFormat called on same factory.
When you call CreateCustomFontCollection you have to provide a collection key and its size, it's a blob only meaningful to you, could be anything. Later on your loader will be called with this key, so you can identify it. For example you can use a string 'myspecialkey' as a key, and in CreateEnumeratorFromKey check if it's called with that key, rejecting any other key.
If you only wanted to create a fontface object from a path to a file, you don't need any of above, just use CreateFontFileReference followed by CreateFontFace.
If anyone is interested in the code which finally worked:
Add Common.h, FontLoader.h and FontLoader.cpp to your project (code is given below) and add the following lines to your application:
#include "FontLoader.h"
// ...
IDWriteFactory* pDWriteFactory;
IDWriteFontCollection *fCollection;
IDWriteTextFormat* pTextFormat;
// ...
MFFontContext fContext(pDWriteFactory);
std::vector<std::wstring> filePaths; // vector containing ABSOLUTE file paths of the font files which are to be added to the collection
std::wstring fontFileFilePath = L"C:\\xyz\\abc.ttf";
filePaths.push_back(fontFileFilePath);
HRESULT hr = fContext.CreateFontCollection(filePaths, &fCollection); // create custom font collection
hr = pDWriteFactory->CreateTextFormat(
L"Font Family", // Font family name
fCollection,
DWRITE_FONT_WEIGHT_REGULAR,
DWRITE_FONT_STYLE_NORMAL,
DWRITE_FONT_STRETCH_NORMAL,
16.0f,
L"en-us",
&pTextFormat // IDWriteTextFormat object
);

using GetEditBoxText in IFileSaveDialog

The folowing code is a part of my application.
I want to get a value from file save dialog using a editbox.
So i use AddEditBox function and GetEditBoxText to return value.
I enter "2000.0" in the editbox but the rturn value is Empty.
what is the problem?
wstring GetSaveFileForMakeDif(double & MinDistance) {
const DWORD CONTROL_GROUP = 5001;
const DWORD CONTROL_LABEL = 5002;
const DWORD CONTROL_EDITBOX_MINDIST = 5003;
wstring ret(L"");
HRESULT hr = S_FALSE;

// Create a new common open file dialog.
IFileSaveDialog *pfd = NULL;
hr = CoCreateInstance(CLSID_FileSaveDialog, NULL, CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER, IID_PPV_ARGS(&pfd));
if (SUCCEEDED(hr))
{
DWORD dwOptions;
hr = pfd->GetOptions(&dwOptions);
// Set the title of the dialog.
if (SUCCEEDED(hr)) {
hr = pfd->SetTitle(L"Select Files");
hr = pfd->SetFileName(L"outputfile");
hr = pfd->SetDefaultExtension(L"txt");
}
// Set up the customization.
hr = pfd->QueryInterface(IID_PPV_ARGS(&pfdc));
if (SUCCEEDED(hr))
{
hr = pfdc->StartVisualGroup(CONTROL_GROUP, L"");
if (SUCCEEDED(hr))
hr = pfdc->AddText(CONTROL_LABEL, L"Min Distance:");
if (SUCCEEDED(hr))
hr = pfdc->AddEditBox(CONTROL_EDITBOX_MINDIST, L"2000.0");
pfdc->EndVisualGroup();
}
// Show the open file dialog.
if (SUCCEEDED(hr))
{
hr = pfd->Show(hMainWindow);
if (SUCCEEDED(hr))
{
IShellItem *psi = NULL;
hr = pfd->GetResult(&psi);
wchar_t *pszPath = new wchar_t[MAX_PATH];
psi->GetDisplayName(SIGDN_FILESYSPATH, &pszPath);
if (SUCCEEDED(hr))
{
ret = pszPath;
wchar_t * txt = NULL;
hr = pfdc->GetEditBoxText(CONTROL_EDITBOX_MINDIST, &txt);
//txt return L""

}
}
}
pfd->Release();
}
pfdc->Release();
return ret;
};
Event handling is needed to catch the values before the dialog closes.
There is a complete MSDN example available here:
Common File Dialog Sample
At the moment the download link does not seem to be available. The example below shows how to catch the event in OnFileOk

error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _IID_IDirectDraw2

I work with piece of legacy code which uses direct draw and I'm in rather embarrassing situation.
Not long ago I've updated my system and had to adapt to the new situation (loading ddraw.dll) and everything worked fine.
Today I explored another legacy solution which also uses classes (files) I've changed, but I'm stuck with above mentioned linking error. I've checked and compared project properties and they seam fine.
This is code for directX initialization, "troublesome" code is bold.
typedef int (__stdcall *DirectDrawCreateFunc)(GUID FAR* a ,LPDIRECTDRAW FAR* b, IUnknown FAR* c);
/* init_directx:
* Low-level DirectDraw initialization routine.
*/
int CDCUtils::init_directx(HWND allegro_wnd)
{
LPDIRECTDRAW directdraw1;
HRESULT hr;
LPVOID temp;
HINSTANCE ddraw = LoadLibrary("%WINDIR%\system32\ddraw.dll");
if(ddraw== NULL)
{
return -1;
}
_ddrawLib =ddraw;
DirectDrawCreateFunc ddFunc = (DirectDrawCreateFunc)GetProcAddress(ddraw,"DirectDrawCreate");
if(ddFunc)
{
/* first we have to set up the DirectDraw1 interface... */
hr = ddFunc(NULL, &directdraw1, NULL);
if (FAILED(hr))
return -1;
}
///* first we have to set up the DirectDraw1 interface... */
//hr = DirectDrawCreate(NULL, &directdraw1, NULL);
//if (FAILED(hr))
// return -1;
//...then query the DirectDraw2 interface
//This is the only place where IID_IDirectDraw2 is mentioned in entire solution
hr=directdraw1->QueryInterface(IID_IDirectDraw2, &temp);
if (FAILED(hr))
return -1;
_directdraw = (LPDIRECTDRAW2)temp;
directdraw1->Release();
/* set the default cooperation level */
hr = IDirectDraw2_SetCooperativeLevel(_directdraw, allegro_wnd, DDSCL_NORMAL);
if (FAILED(hr))
return -1;
/* get capabilities */
_ddcaps.dwSize = sizeof(_ddcaps);
hr = IDirectDraw2_GetCaps(_directdraw, &_ddcaps, NULL);
if (FAILED(hr)) {
TRACE("Can't get driver caps\n");
return -1;
}
_dxHwnd=allegro_wnd;
return 0;
}
Any ideas?
Why it works in one solution and not in this one?
Oh linker I loathe thee.
Did you add dxguid.lib to your project's linker inputs?
Make sure you add Dxguid.lib in your project.

How to listen to COM events from Office applications that were started independently?

What I want to do:
Write an application that listens to Office events. I want to listen to events from any instance opened on the machine. E.g. if I'm listening to BeforeDocumentSave in Word, then I want my sink for this method to be activated whenever any instance of Word on the host saves a document.
Another requirement is that I'm writing in C++ without MFC or ATL.
What I've done:
I've written a program that's supposed to listen to Word events. See the code below.
The problem:
It doesn't work - the event handlers are never entered, although I open a word application and do the actions that should trigger the events.
I have some specific questions, and of course any other input would be very welcome!
Questions:
Is it possible to listen to events from an application that wasn't started by me? In all the examples I found, the listening application starts the office application it wants to listen to.
In a microsoft howto (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/183599/EN-US/) I found the following comment:
However, most events, such as
Microsoft Excel's Workbook events, do
not start with DISPID 1. In such
cases, you must explicitly modify the
dispatch map in MyEventSink.cpp to
match the DISPIDs with the correct
methods.
How do I modify the dispatch map?
For now I've defined only Startup, Quit and DocumentChange, which take no arguments. The methods I really need do take arguments, specifically one of type Document. How do I define parameters of this type if I'm not using MFC?

Your number one problem is you don't run the message loop in the main thread and that causes the events to never reach your sink object. Calls form the COM server to your sink object are dispatched using Windows messages, so you have to run the message loop instead of simply calling Sleep() so that the incoming events are eventually dispatched to the sink object.
I found two problems in the code I gave here:
As sharptooth pointed out, Sleep is wrong here. It even causes the application I listen to to hang, or sleep. I put in a message loop as sharptooth suggested.
I hadn't implemented 'Invoke'. I thought that if I implemented the event methods themselves, they would be called by the application, but this is not the case. I had to implement invoke and make it switch on the dispid and call the different event methods. I found the dispid in the typelib. Looking at a method in the OLE viewer, I used the 'id' which apparently is the dispid.
Following is a corrected .cpp file. In the .h file the only correction is to change Invoke into a declaration instead of an implementation.
Two notes on the code:
I constructed it out of various examples I found, so you may find names or comments that seem irrelevant because they were taken from elsewhere.
To get the COM object I used either GetActiveObject or CoCreateInstance. The former works only if the event firing application is already running. The latter creates an invisible instance of it. For Word this worked well, possibly because if I open another Word instance its part of the same process. I haven't checked yet what happens if I open a new process, if the events would still be triggered.
Hope this helps!
