C++ zlibstatic library in VS2019 - c++

I'm in the process of learning C++ and I'm halfway through one of my courses so I figured I would try to do something to challenge myself and I'm getting stuck on what I'm trying to do. Long story short I'm trying to parse some info from a file inside of a zip folder.
I followed this post here to understand what to do but I'm missing something that is not quite ovvious to me: How to use zlib library in visual studio 2017?
I'm using VS2019
I researched the libzip and zlib libraries online and realized that I need to get the zlibstatic.lib into my project. I've read through the above posts and I thought I set my paths and folders correctly, but I'm getting an error not being able to source the file.

Well you can see that there is no file called zlib.h in the directory you specified. I don't know zlib but usually the header files are in a searate directory. Often it's called include something or other.
Bottom line, in the 'Additional Include Directories' setting you need to specify the folder containing zlib.h, not zlibstatic.lib.
I'm guessing you will also need to add zlibstatic.lib to the Linker/Input/Additional Dependencies setting. It's not enough just to specify the directory where the library is, you have to name it as well.

How to include SFML source code into my visual studio 2017 c++ project and compile

I have been programming a game in c++ using the sfml library. However, I would like to adjust some of the code of that library, and use that altered code in my project.
So instead of linking the dll I would like to add the source code and then play with that source code. (e.g. for speed optimization).
I know that doing something like that is generally speaking a bad idea. Howeover, I want to learn by playing around a bit and trying different things.
So how would I add the sfml source code to my c++ project in MS visual studio. Note that I am a total noob. I already tried adding the sfml folder that I downloaded from git in the project properties page called "Additional Include Directories", but i am getting errors, of the form "Cannot open include file: 'SFML/Graphics/GLCheck.hpp': No such file or directory" so I guess that i have not yet done enough.
If you want to modify the source code in the library, all you'd have to do is just navigate to where you have SFML installed and go into the code files with a text editor and edit them.
Then, you could link the library to your VS project the same way you would normally but that library is now modified by you.
Seeing as you have a search directory issue already in VS, you must fix that first. Fix that and then go and modify the library's .hpp, .h, .cpp, whatever files in-place.
To fix the search issue.... I don't use VS for graphics, I use CodeBlocks so I am not sure about their GUI to link libraries and change search directories... but, find out where you installed SFML. Check your /usr/include/, it's probably there. Specify that path in the search directories. Just go and find where that GLCheck.hpp file is located. For Example: Say it's full path is /usr/include/SFML/Graphics/GLCheck.hpp... then /usr/include/SFML/Graphics/ or just /usr/include/ (VS might handle it recursively) needs to be in the list of SEARCH DIRECTORIES.

Attempting to include a Library in Xcode, file not found

I'm trying to create a program that uses a lot of linear algebra and OpenGL, and a colleague of mine recommended that I use the Eigen library to make things a lot simpler. After downloading and extracting the library off of Eigen's official website and I clicked on the project, found the "Link Binary with Libraries" option, went into to the folder that resulted from the unarchiving (eigen-eigen-bdd17ee3b1b3), and then found the Eigen folder. This folder contains all of the header files.
The library showed up on the sidebar, and when I go into the correct sub-folder the header files were all there too. According to the Eigen website, you only need the header files for the includes to work, but no matter how I set up the filepath in the include statement, even if what I can physically see what I'm including on the sidebar, XCode tells me it can't find the file. I'm using an older version of XCode 4. Any advice?

Visual c++ 2008 express creating a library

I know many have asked this question, but following the things suggested hasn't seemed to work for me. So I thought I'd ask for help, as I'm obviously missing something.
I've spent the past couple days writing some code that uses the boost library that allows me to open text files, translate the text into a usable data format, and save the data as a text file when I'm done with it. I built it specifically to be extendable to deal with different datatypes (specifically any object or class I make down the line) so that I could link to it as a library in my project as I do other libraries.
However, even after compiling it into a lib and adding the directory of the lib to the "Additional Include Directories", I get an unresolved external error whenever I try to include one of the header files in the library. I've also tried putting the direct path to it under Additional Dependencies (as well as just the library name with the path to the directory set in Additional Include Directories and Additional Library Directories. I also tried it with only one of those on at a time and it still failed).
Is there something I'm missing? How can I compile this code I'd like to reuse and link to it in new projects without copying the cpp and h files into my solution every time? Would a DLL work better/easier? If so, how would I go about compiling it as a dll and linking to it?

Ok. While it's not the exact solution I was going for, I managed to figure this out. For anyone running into this problem, there's a wonderful tutorial that explains how to make DLL files and make use of them (at least on windows, don't have any computers using an alternate OS set up yet to test the DLL on). The gist of the problem is you need to also keep a copy of the .h file handy to include in your project. (what I did is created a directory on my C drive that holds the libraries I'm making, and in that I have a folder for the .lib files and a folder for the .h files.) Either import the .h file directly into your project directory or add it to your project properties (C++ -> General -> Additional Include Directories ). Make sure for that, you're linking to the directory, not the file itself. In the linker, you need to add your .lib file to the Additional Dependencies section (Linker -> Input -> Additional Dependencies). You can put the whole path here, or you can just put the file name, then tell the program where to find the directory it's in (add the path to the directory to Linker -> General -> Additional Library Directories)
Hope this helps anyone else who managed to miss something that everyone else seems to understand instinctually :P

Visual Studio 2010 Assimp library won't link

I seem to have a perpetual problem of never being able to get any library to link with Visual Studio. Ever. I eventually get tired of trying and just include the header and source files manually.
My latest endeavour is trying to set up Assimp. I went and downloaded the latest version and followed the installation guide for Visual Studio 2010. http://assimp.sourceforge.net/lib_html/install.html
The result:
LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'assimp--3.0.1270-sdk/lib/assimp_release-dll_x64/assimp.lib'
I set the include directories:
assimp--3.0.1270-sdk/include
I set the library directories:
assimp--3.0.1270-sdk/lib/assimp_release-dll_x64
I set the additional dependencies (the guide includes the directories, but shouldn't I just be able to just put assimp.lib since I included the library directory above?):
assimp--3.0.1270-sdk/lib/assimp_release-dll_x64/assimp.lib
What am I doing wrong?
Also, considering this isn't my first time having these difficulties, are there any good tutorials to help me understand this process a little better? I've tried searching for it but most are for previous versions of VS...
My guess is you should provide explicitly relative or absolute paths for the library directory.
You're right about the dependency name, assimp.lib is the correct name and the guide is a bit ambiguous here.
Apart from that, you're doing everything right. Provided the lib file exists, it should link.

Made a new project, added main.cpp and wrote the code at this URL:

What's next?!?!! It seems like a darn mystery to build a boost code!

You need to use bjam. It is responsible for creating the libraries that your application will use. Once you use bjam, you are going to need to instruct your project to include the lib file. You do this by going into the project's properties -> Configuration Properties -> Linker -> General. Add the directory which created the lib file to Additional Library Directories. You should be capable of correctly linking after that.

So, at last, with a real head ache, I've managed to do so.
The exact steps I took, so others will be saved from the head ache:
Went to http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/more/getting_started/windows.html#or-build-binaries-from-source .
Followed the "5.3.1 Get bjam" clause. Downloaded the "pre-built bjam executable for your platform" at this URL: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=7586&package_id=72941 .
Extracted the ZIP file (my platform is Windows).
Ran "build.bat". It produced the file "bin.ntx86/bjam.exe".
Copied this file to my PATH ("...../boost_1_43_0/").
From a command line, executed "bjam.exe" and waited for about 4-5 minutes.
Then got this message at the console: "The Boost C++ Libraries were successfully built!"
That's it, it even tells you where the include & lib files are.
Not all Boost libraries are header only, Boost.System is one of them. The documentation for Boost.Asio tells you that it depends on Boost.System.
With Visual Studio, the Boost libraries use auto-linking, which means you don't have to explicitly link to the libraries you need. You however need to have the necessary libraries in the library search path, either globally or per-project.
If you don't want to build the Boost libraries yourself, you can use the installers provided by boostpro (only up to Boost 1.42 though at the moment). If you want to build them yourself instead, the documentation covers that well.
I had the same error and i followed the SourceForge. The link will take you to a folder of zipped lib and dll files for version of boost.You can download and unzip related library and when copied it to the related location everything gonna be alright ;)
In Visual Studio, right-click on your project, then go to properties and select:
Properties -> Configuration Properties -> Linker
There you add the full path of your library in the tab named "Additional Library Directories".
