I'm using a Google cloud build trigger to build my container image. After pushing a new build (push by git tag), I can see it on my Cloud Build history.
As you can see, the build already has an artifact URI (the URI of the image). But, when calling the gcloud build list - it's not there:
It only appears in the IMAGE column AFTER the building is completed.
How to get the artifact build while building?
IIUC, builds and artifacts are different things.
When you submit gcloud builds, you're creating build(job)s that are identified by build IDs.
Builds may result in the creation of artifacts (usually -- but not limited to-- container images). It is only during the conclusion of a build that artifacts are generated and so you would not expect these to be available until then.

Because you specify images|artifacts in your build spec, you can infer (before these are created), where they will result and you could query them directly then. In the case of container images pushed, you may query these using gcloud container images list, perhaps (per the above) gcloud container image list --repository=gcr.io/your-project

You may initially check through the filtered list of container images for your specific criteria.
gcloud artifacts docker images list --include-tags
Once you have the view of the images to be deleted, move to the following.
You may use the following command to delete an Artifact Registry container image.
gcloud artifacts docker images delete IMAGE [--async] [--delete-tags] [GCLOUD_WIDE_FLAG …]
A valid container image that can be referenced by tag or digest, has the format of
LOCATION-docker.pkg.dev/PROJECT-ID/REPOSITORY-ID/IMAGE:tag
This command can fail for the following reasons:
Trying to delete an image by digest when the image is still tagged.
Add --delete-tags to delete the digest and the tags.
Trying to delete an image by tag when the image has other tags. Add
--delete-tags to delete all tags.
A valid repository format was not provided.
The specified image does not exist.
The active account does not have permission to delete images.
It is always recommended to check and reconfirm any deletion operations so you don’t lose any useful artifacts and data items.

How do I use a custom builder image in Cloud Build which is stored in a repository in Artifact Registry (instead of Container Registry?)
I have set up a pipeline in Cloud Build where some python code is executed using official python images. As I want to cache my python dependencies, I wanted to create a custom Cloud Builder as shown in the official documentation here.
GCP clearly indicates to switch to Artifact Registry as Container Registry will be replaced by the former. Consequently, I have pushed my docker image to Artifact Registry. I also gave my Cloud Builder Service Account the reader permissions to Artifact Registry.
Using the image in a Cloud Build step like this

"xxxx" is the repository name and "yyyy" the name of my image. The tag "latest" exists.
I can pull the image locally and access the repository.
I could not find any documentation on how to integrate these images from Artifact Registry. There is only this official guide, where the image is built using the Docker image from Container Registry – however this should not be future proof.
It looks like you need to add your Project ID to your image name.
You can use the "$PROJECT_ID" Cloud Build default substitution variable.
So your updated image name would look something like this:

I am trying to include the Container Analyis API link in a Cloud Build pipeline.This is a beta component and with command line I need to install it first:
gcloud components install beta local-extract
then I can run the on demand container analyis (if the container is present locally):
gcloud beta artifacts docker images scan ubuntu:latest
My question is how I can use component like beta local-extract within Cloud Build ?
I tried to do a fist step and install the missing componentL

With the cloud-sdk-docker container you can change the entrypoint to bash pipe gcloud commands together. Here is an (ugly) example:

As to your bonus question. Yes, --format=value(the.name.of.the.field) is probably what you want. The trick is to know the name of the field. I usually start with --format=json on my development workstation to figure out the name.
The problem comes from Cloud Build. It cache some often used images and if you want to use a brand new feature in GCLOUD CLI the cache can be too old.
I performed a test tonight, the version is 326 in cache. the 328 has just been released. So, the cached version has 2 weeks old, maybe too old for your feature. It could be worse in your region!
The solution to fix this, is to explicitly request the latest version.

Copy the latest version
Paste the full version name in the step of your Cloud Build pipeline.
The side effect is a longer build. Indeed, because this latest image isn't cached, it has to be downloaded in Cloud Build.
I'm using the Google Cloud Build service to create images of my application. I created a build trigger that looks for a git tag in a specific format. Each time that Cloud Build detects a new tag, a new build is performed.
Since the build time is pretty long, I am trying to make it faster.
I found that it's possible to ask Google to build the application on a faster machine (Source).
gcloud builds submit --config=cloudbuild.yaml --machine-type=n1-highcpu-8 .
This code works if you choose the manual build option. Since I created the build trigger from the GCP user interface, I can't find any place to define the machine-type argument.
How can I choose the machine-type on automatic build triggers?

You need to change to Build Configuration=Cloud Build configuration file, and commit the cloudbuild.yaml to git.
Then use the machineType field in the options property of your cloudbuild.yaml file.

Our Jenkins is setup in aws and we did not manage to use slaves. Since the platform is big and some artifacts contain many others, our jenkins comes to his limits when multiple developers commit to different repositories and it is forced to run multiple jobs at the same time.
The aim is to:
- Stay with jenkins since our processes are documented based on it and we use many plugins e.g. test result summary and github integration
- Run jobs in codebuild and get feedback in jenkins to improve the performance
Are there best practices for this?
We did the following steps to build big artifacts outside of jenkins:
- Install jenkins codebuild plugin
- Create jenkins pipeline
- Store settings.xml for maven build in s3
- Store access in system manager parameters to use in codebuild and maven
Create codebuild project with the necessary permissions and following functionality:
-- Get settings.xml from s3
-- run maven with the necessary access data
-- store tests results in s3
Create jenkinsfile whith following functionality:
-- get commitID and run codebuild with it
-- get generated files of test results from s3 and pass it to jenkins
-- delete generated files from s3
-- pass files to jenkins to show test results
With this approach we managed to reduce the runtime to 5 mins.
We next challenge we had was to build and angular application on top of a java microservice, create a docker image and push it to different environments. This jobs was running around 25 mins in jenkins.
We did the following steps to build the docker images outside of jenkins:
- Install jenkins codebuild plugin
- Create jenkins pipeline
- Store settings.xml for maven build in s3
- Store access in system manager parameters to use in codebuild and maven
Create codebuild project with the necessary permissions and following functionality:
-- Get settings.xml from s3
-- login into ecr in all environments
-- build the angular app
-- build the java app
-- copy necessary files for docker build
-- build docker image
-- push to all envoronments
Create jenkinsfile whith following functionality:
-- get branch names of both repositories to build the docker image from
-- get branch latest commitID
-- call the codebuild projects with both commitIDs (notice that the main repository will need the buildspec)
With this approach we managed to reduce the runtime to 5 mins.
