I have a strange issue with a projects that I am trying to start from Visual Studio 2017 - project's exe file is getting blocked by Bit9. And it happens only with Visual Studio 2017, and the same is working with VS 2015.
What I can see from Bit9 screen is that msvsmon.exe is trying to run MyProject.exe and it gets blocked. I guess this is some setting on visual studio side but I cannot figure out what to change.
I looked on the internet and I checked Debug tab of the project, and Use remote machine was already deselected.

I opened the project file in the solution (can't remember how I managed to do this) and it presents a number of warnings eg.

It doesn't like this PlatformToolSet setting for instance. I don't get it because it is a setting in the property pages on VS2015 that can be selected. I anyway changed this property clicked apply then changed it back clicked apply. It is still there in the project file as before with same error message, I also changed the setting to v140_xp just to verify that it was seeing the new property which it was.
The story is that I was working on one computer with VS 2015, then I wanted to run something on another remote computer, however by then VS 2015 was replaced with VS 2017 and I installed VS 2017 on the remote. I built the project on VS2017 but then went back to the local PC with VS2015 to do some QT stuff (QT plugin is not yet available on VS2017). This was OK but then it refused to load on the remote VS2017 PC. So I uninstalled VS2017 and replaced it with VS2015, the project still doesn't load on the remote PC with VS2015.
Maybe somehow I have a VS 2017 project that for some reason loads on one computer with VS2015 and not the other, hence the settings that VS 2015 doesn't like.
So I try to create a new QT GUI project (I installed QtVsTools extension) on the remote machine that has problems with my project file. And now I get an error (the same error also occurs with a new win32 console application)

To open it please use a version of the project that supports it.
As far as I know .vcxproj has been supported since MS VS 2010

The visual studio install had become corrupted, I repaired the installation then was able to create projects again. If you get weird project loading errors, then maybe your VS install is messed up.
I recently made the change to Visual Studio 2015 from Visual Studio 2012 as my compiler for my c++ projects. After making this change I have noticed that visual studio will frequently hang in the build process.
This never occurred with Visual Studio 2012. The hangups are at random points and do not occur at the same build points in my projects.
When I ran VS in administrator mode and got all of the cl.exe's and link.exe's to appear as command prompts I was able to see when they hung. And there were no errors thrown or anything.
The only way I have successfully worked around this issue is by setting Visual Studio's build process to only process one project at a time and use only one compilation simultaneously. However I cant maintain this as my build time is somewhere around 3-4 hours (Yes, this is a HUGE project).

So here's my problem, i already have a written code with visual studio c++ 2015. I need to run it on a windows server 2003. So basically i need to run it on visual studio 2005. Is there anyway i can do it? Or should i upgrade the visual studio version?

I encontered the same issue. But you can also compile for your windows server by changing some project settings:
Right-click on your project -> Settings. In the configuration settings, navigate to general. Now, you can change "platform toolset" to "Visual Studio 2015 - Windows XP". After compiling, the resulting exe should run on your windows server fine. At least, this worked for me.

Now, every time I try to start a new project solution in C++ win32 application, the idle-cursor turns to wait-cursor, nothing seems to happen for a long time, the minute i hit the screen, windows tells me visual studio isn't responding, then I'm forced to kill visual studio.

I rebooted, retried using the visual studio command prompt, while running it as an administrator. This time it didn't complain, nor outputted anything.
I also tried running visual studio itself as an administrator, but still get same the effect when attempting to create a new c++ win32 console project.

The current resolution is to create a project in safe mode

Create a new project
The project should now be accessible by going through the standard way of opening visual studio

I uninstalled visual studio, then reinstalled. Unfortunately, I still can't run visual studio normally just to create a project, it continues to hang indefinitely every time I do. The procedure above is still the only resolution at the moment.
I guess you run this on Windows 8 ?
In win8, folder "program files" are not allowed to write except for adminstrators
Main Problem
When I try to access the properties of a project in Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows Desktop through Project -> ProjectName Properties, Visual Studio freezes completely without an error and I must end it through the Windows Task Manager.
I ran Visual Studio with /safemode enabled. This did provide some information by saying that "The 'Visual Studio Component Model Host Package' package did not load correctly."
It also produced a log file with some errors and warnings. Errors and warning entries in the log can be searched for with <type>Error</type> and <type>Warning</type> respectively. Additionally, opening the file in Internet Explorer seems to apply some styles to the file and makes it more readable.

The errors in the log seem to center around this Visual Studio Component Model Host Package. I tried searching for errors related to that, but did not find anything I thought was applicable to my situation.
The dll Microsoft.VisualStudio.ComponentModelHost.Implementation.dll is present in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\

I am using version 12.0.30723.00 Update 3 of Visual Studio and I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 6.1 build 7601.
I have tried re-installing Visual Studio in order to to clear out any bad settings, but that did not seem to work.
I tried running Visual Studio with /resetskipkgs and /resetsettings, and neither of those worked.
Trying to open project properties in safe mode still froze Visual Studio.
Backstory
I am ultimately trying to setup an environment in which to develop OpenGL applications. I have some experience with it through following the Arc Synthesis tutorials, but I do not know how to operate outside of the specialized environment the tutorials provided.
Following the OpenGL Book setup instructions, I am told development will go more smoothly if I use the GLEW and freeGLUT libraries. In order to do so, I need to be able to link in extra files to a project. In Visual Studio, this is done through the project properties dialog, but I cannot access it due to the freezing problem.
I am not very familiar with the development process in C++, so I am wary of venturing outside of the IDE provided by Visual Studio, but I might just have to do that if this problem persists.
