Match regex until the first occurrence of special character '->' - regex

I am a newbie to regexp and was trying to match the expression until a special character/s. If the matches exist before the special character then return it otherwise return nothing.
Here is the demo.
My goal is to return the match if found before the '->' special character otherwise return nothing. It should not return the matches after the '->' special char.
Regexp: /()()(\[[^\]]+\])\s*(-[->])(.*)/g // In third group actual result will be returned
For example data:
[AAA] -> [BBB] -> [CCC] // In this case needs to match [AAA]
AAA -> [BBB] -> [CCC] // In this case do not return [BBB], instead return nothing as before special char '->', no matchng is there.
Please help me with this. Thanks in advance.

I have been trying to get a regex expression to return me the following in the following situations.
XX -> XX
XXX -> XXX
XX/XX -> XX
XX/XX/XX -> XX/XX
XXX/XXX/XX -> XXX/XXX
I had the following Regex, however they do no work.

They are close but are not there.
Any Help would be appreciated.
You want to get all text from the start till the last occurrence of a specific character or till the end of string if the character is missing.
Use
^(?:.*(?=\/)|.+)

(?:.*(?=\/)|.+) - a non-capturing group that matches either of the two alternatives, and if the first one matches first the second won't be tried:
.*(?=\/) - any 0+ chars other than line break chars, as many as possible upt to but excluding /
| - or
.+ - any 1+ chars other than line break chars, as many as possible.
It will be easier to use a replace here to match / followed by non-slash characters before end of line:

Any special reason it has to be a regular expression? How about just splitting the string at the slashes, remove the last item and rejoin:

Regex Match only not keywords

I have a string like <dlskjfldjf>Text creation List<string> checking edit<br/>. Need help with regex to match only <dlskjfldjf> and not List<string>
Keyword could be any generic type like
IList<T>
List<T>
etc
I tried with <([a-zA-Z]+)> which would match <dlskjfldjf> and below which would match List<string> but not sure how to mix them both

Use a Zero-width negative lookbehind assertion (?<! expression ):

In a language that supports Negative Lookbehind a pattern like this could work:

In JavaScript you may need to use two patterns to achieve the same result, test once for the angle bracket pattern and then test again to ensure you don't have the type information preceding it.
What you could do is match what you don't want to keep, and capture in a group what you do want to keep:
\b(?:List|ilist|IList|IEnumerable|IQuerable)<[^<>]*>|(<[a-zA-Z]+>)
That will match:
\b Word boundary to prevent any of the listed words in the alternation being part of a larger word

Regular expression for match string with new line char

How use regular expression to match in text passphrase between Passphrase= string and \n char (Select: testpasssword)? The password can contain any characters.
My partial solution: Passphrase.*(?=\\nName) => Passphrase=testpasssword

The R"(Passphrase=\K.+?(?=\\n))" is a raw string literal defining a Passphrase=\K.+?(?=\\n) regex pattern. It matches Passphrase= and then drops the matched text with the match reset operator \K and then matches 1 or more chars, as few as possible, up to the first \ char followed with n letter.
You may use a capturing group approach that looks simpler though:

The only thing you were missing is the the lazy quantifier telling your regex to only match as much as necessary and a positive lookbehind. The first one being a simple question mark after the plus, the second one just prefacing the phrase you want to match but not include by inputting ?<=. Check the code example to see it in action.

Regular expressions are the wrong tool for the job because you are dealing with nested structures, i.e. recursion.
But there is a simple algorithm to do this, which I described in more detail in this answer to a previous question. The gist is to write code which scans through the string keeping a counter of the open parentheses which have not yet been matched by a closing parenthesis. When that counter returns to zero, then you know you've reached the final closing parenthesis.
You can use regex recursion:
\(([^()]|(?R))*\)
[^\(]*(\(.*\))[^\)]*
[^\(]* matches everything that isn't an opening bracket at the beginning of the string, (\(.*\)) captures the required substring enclosed in brackets, and [^\)]* matches everything that isn't a closing bracket at the end of the string. Note that this expression does not attempt to match brackets; a simple parser (see dehmann's answer) would be more suitable for that.
This answer explains the theoretical limitation of why regular expressions are not the right tool for this task.
Regular expressions can not do this.
Regular expressions are based on a computing model known as Finite State Automata (FSA). As the name indicates, a FSA can remember only the current state, it has no information about the previous states.
In the above diagram, S1 and S2 are two states where S1 is the starting and final step. So if we try with the string 0110 , the transition goes as follows:
0 1 1 0
-> S1 -> S2 -> S2 -> S2 ->S1
In the above steps, when we are at second S2 i.e. after parsing 01 of 0110, the FSA has no information about the previous 0 in 01 as it can only remember the current state and the next input symbol.
In the above problem, we need to know the no of opening parenthesis; this means it has to be stored at some place. But since FSAs can not do that, a regular expression can not be written.
However, an algorithm can be written to do this task. Algorithms are generally falls under Pushdown Automata (PDA). PDA is one level above of FSA. PDA has an additional stack to store some additional information. PDAs can be used to solve the above problem, because we can 'push' the opening parenthesis in the stack and 'pop' them once we encounter a closing parenthesis. If at the end, stack is empty, then opening parenthesis and closing parenthesis matches. Otherwise not.
(?<=\().*(?=\))
If you want to select text between two matching parentheses, you are out of luck with regular expressions. This is impossible(*).
This regex just returns the text between the first opening and the last closing parentheses in your string.
(*) Unless your regex engine has features like balancing groups or recursion. The number of engines that support such features is slowly growing, but they are still not a commonly available.
It is actually possible to do it using .NET regular expressions, but it is not trivial, so read carefully.

You need the first and last parentheses. Use something like this:
str.indexOf('('); - it will give you first occurrence
str.lastIndexOf(')'); - last one
So you need a string between,

While so many answers mention this in some form by saying that regex does not support recursive matching and so on, the primary reason for this lies in the roots of the Theory of Computation.
Language of the form {a^nb^n | n>=0} is not regular. Regex can only match things that form part of the regular set of languages.
