Connect to EC2 instance with a private IP address via a VPN - amazon-web-services

I've created a VPC with IPv4 CIDR 172.16.0.0/16, next I've created three subnets:
subnet_1 172.16.0.0/20
subnet_2 172.16.16.0/20
subnet_3 172.16.32.0/20
Next I created an Internet Gateway attached to the VPC.
At this point I've created an EC2 instance and I attached to it an Elastic IP. On this instance I have installed an OpenVPN access server.
I then created a second EC2 instance that only has a private IP address. In my mind I thought that once connected via VPN I should able to ssh into the second EC2 instance with a private IP, but I'm not able to connect. What might I have done wrong?

restrict ssh accesss to an ec2 instance to only my ip address

i have an ec2 instance running ubuntu and im trying to restrict ssh access to only my ip address, im using both the security on the ec2 and the network acl, i have multiple ip addresses
192.168.1.233: the one on my computer in system prefrences -> network under the name of the wifi network

i know it has something to do with the network ip address vs the device ip address and using the right ip with the right cidr block but i dont know exactly what to put, can someone help me
You have to check what is your outgoing IP address. You do this by going to any "check my ip" website. This will be the address you have to allow in your security groups.
Also do not modify network ACL. Default NACL is all that you need. Only use Security Groups to control access to your instance from your IP.
The error message appears to indicate that you are attempting to connect to the Amazon EC2 instance by using EC2 Instance Connect.
EC2 Instance Connect works as follow:
It uses a web connection (port 443) from your browser to the EC2 Instance Connect service
The EC2 Instance Connect service then establishes an SSH connection (port 22) from the EC2 Instance Connect service to your Amazon EC2 instance
Therefore, the Security Group sees your connection as coming from the EC2 Instance Connect service rather than the public IP address of your computer.
You would need to add the IP address ranges of the EC2 Instance Connect service the Security Group to permit access to the EC2 instance (see Set up EC2 Instance Connect - Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud). However, this would permit an inbound connection from any computer that successfully authenticates via the EC2 Instance Connect service.
Thus, it is not possible to restrict access to the EC2 Instance to your own IP address while using EC2 Instance Connect to connect to the instance.
However, it is worth noting that EC2 Instance Connect uses IAM to authenticate access to the instance, so you should trust this authentication. Rather that restricting by IP address of computers, you could restrict to the IP address ranges of the EC2 Instance Connect service and then use IAM permissions to control access to the instance.

AWS Site-to-Site VPN Configuration doesn't allow inbound traffic

I've been following the instructions here: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/networking-and-content-delivery/simulating-site-to-site-vpn-customer-gateways-strongswan/
I can successfully get the VPN up and running, but I can't successfully ping internal IP addresses from behind the VPN.
Here's my setup:
"On-prem" is simulated using a VPC with IP address: 172.19.0.0/16. The VPN is deployed on an EC2 instance in the subnet 172.19.16.0/20. This subnet has the following route table:

Where eni-XXXXXXXXX is the network interface of the EC2 instance that has the VPN deployed on it.
My cloud VPC has the CIDR range: 172.21.0.0/16. I have an EC2 instance deployed in the 172.21.32.0/20 subnet which has the following route table:

vgw-XXXXXXXXX

igw-XXXXXXXXX
Where the vgw-XXXXXXXXX is the virtual gateway associated with the VPN I have.
I can send traffic from my "on-prem" VPC into my cloud VPC successfully, but no traffic comes back out. I've tested this by SSHing into an EC2 instance in my "on-prem" VPC and then pinging a private IP address of an EC2 instance in my cloud VPC and I can see the pings are received by the EC2 instance in the cloud VPC, but my "on-prem" instance never receives the response.
I have checked my security groups and NACLs and they are not preventing this type of traffic.
Is there something misconfigured here?
This is not an entirely satisfying answer, but I moved from using a Virtual Private Gateway to using a Transit Gateway and I was able to get it to work.

How can a lambda inside a private subnet access EC2 in a public subnet?

I've created an EC2 instance inside a public subnet (so that I can access it from my home network) and I have created some Lambda's inside the private subnets of my VPC.
My 1st lambda can freely access the internet (through a NAT Gateway) and do its job. Which is to fetch a file from the internet and upload it to S3, once per day.
My 2nd lambda is supposed to retrieve this file from S3 (which it does without issue) read the file & then upload the data to MySQL running on the EC2 instance. It is unable to connect to the Database (using either the EC2's public or private IP's) and the Cloudwatch logs show that the session times out, making me think this is a networking issue.
I have a 3rd lambda that will also need to interact with the EC2/DB instance.
My security group allows for all incoming traffic from my home network IP, the NAT gateway & the VPC IP range. All outbound traffic is allowed.
I appreciate its not usual to have an EC2/DB set up this way, in a public subnet, but its my preference to interact it with it this way from home using Sequel Pro.
However, is my set up even possible? Eg can my private subnet lambdas interact with a public subnet ec2 instance? if so, does anybody have any ideas how I can make this happen?
It appears that your situation is:
An Amazon EC2 instance running in a public subnet, with MySQL
The EC2 instance has a Security Group allowing all incoming traffic from your home network IP, the NAT gateway and the VPC IP range
An AWS Lambda function connected to a private subnet of the same VPC
A NAT Gateway allowing private subnets to connect to the Internet
The Lambda function is unable to connect with the MySQL database running on the EC2 instance
The normal security configuration for this scenario would be:
A Security Group on the Lambda function (Lambda-SG) that allows all Outbound access (no Inbound required)
A Security Group on the EC2 instance (EC2-SG) that allows inbound access from Lambda-SG on port 3306, plus whatever inbound permissions you want for accessing your instance via SSH, etc.
Given that your Security Group includes "the VPC IP range", this should be sufficient to permit inbound access.
The Lambda function should reference the EC2 instance via its private IP address to keep traffic within the VPC. By default, all subnets within a VPC can communicate with each other unless the Network ACLs have been modified (and they should generally be left at default values).
This means that the only remaining explanation would be that the MySQL database is not accepting traffic from the VPC IP range. (I'm not a MySQL person, but I know that PostgreSQL requires incoming IP ranges to be defined, so this might be true for MySQL too.)
To diagnose what might be happening in your network, I recommend:
Launch another Amazon EC2 instance in the public subnet
Connect to the new instance and try to connect to the MySQL database via the private IP address
If that works, repeat the process but from an EC2 instance in the private subnet. To use this you will need to connect to the 'public' EC2 instance, and from there connect to the 'private' EC2 instance. Then, try and connect to MySQL from that private instance.
These steps will progressively let you identify where the network problem might lie. Let us know what you find!

How to ssh to my ec2 if i am not using default vpc

Well, I am almost giving up on aws it is really hard to do simple things here. My problem is I am following this link to setup cpanel for commercial use,

I set up my VPC, Subnet, Internet Gateways, Elastic IPs and Route Tables and still can not connect to my ec2. it is frustrating that I am wasting time over an ssh problem which can be solved in a matter of seconds in OVH and here AWS ruining my day any ideas?

To be able to SSH into an Amazon EC2 instance, you'll need the following:
An Amazon VPC (the default one is fine, or create your own)
An Internet Gateway attached to the VPC (to connect it to the Internet)
A public subnet, which is defined as a subnet that has a route table where the route table sends traffic destined for 0.0.0.0/0 to the Internet Gateway
An Amazon EC2 instance in the public subnet, presumably a Linux instance since you want to SSH to it
When launching the instance, nominate a Keypair. If you launch from an Amazon-provided AMI (eg Amazon Linux 2), the keypair will be copied to /users/ec2-user/.ssh/authorized_keys at startup.
The instance should either be launched with Auto-assign Public IP to receive a random public IP address, or associate the instance with an Elastic IP address to associate a static IP address
A security group attached to the EC2 instance permitting inbound SSH access (port 22) either from 0.0.0.0/0 or your own IP address
Don't play with the Network Access Control List (NACL) settings - they default to allowing all traffic in/out
To connect to the instance:
ssh -i YOUR-KEYPAIR.pem ec2-user#IP-ADDRESS
If the connection is immediately rejected, it suggests a problem with the keypair.
If the connection takes some time before failing, it suggests a network-related problem because it is unable to contact the instance. Some corporate networks block outbound SSH access, so try again from a different network (home vs office, or even tethered via your phone) to try and identify the issue.

The ec2 instance can't access internet in a public subnet without a elastic ip address?

I working on aws. I created a public subnet which has a network ACL allows all net traffic, and associated with a internet gateway in the route table.
And then I create a ec2 instance without elastic ip and a ec2 instance with elastic ip in it, and the security group also allows all traffic.
I ssh to the instance which has elastic ip. It works well when I run yum update and curl www.baidu.com and so on. But I can't access internet when I ssh to the ec2 instance which has no elastic ip. anyone knows that is why?
For accessing internet from EC2 instance in public subnet using Internet Gateway, the instance needs to have public IP address. Either one can configure the instance to have public IP address or attach EIP.

As well as being in a subnet that has a route to an Internet gateway, an instance must have a public IP address to communicate with the outside world (this is distinct from an elastic IP).
You can specify this when launching an instance, if not there is a per subnet setting that controls this. The per subnet setting defaults to false other than default subnets in your default VPC. There are more details in the aws docs.
The problem lies with the gateway connected to the subnet you are using. To check the gateway you are using:
Go to the subnet you are using
Click on the Route table
Under Routes -> Destination look for 0.0.0.0/0 and check the gateway you have for it under Target
Here's how the gateways behave:
Internet Gateway (IGW) allows instances with public IPs to access the internet.
NAT Gateway (NGW) allows instances with no public IPs to access the internet.
