I have the following setup. I have a 2 public subnet's and 4 private subnet's.
In public subnet I have a OpenVPN and another demo server.
In private subnet I have one instance.
I have launched a Redshift Cluster which is not publicly accessible.
In the cluster subnet group I have selected 3 private subnets (Blue lines connected in image).
In Redshift security group I have inbound from my OpenVPN, Security Group of my private subnet server and demo server security group.
I am able to connect from my demo server to Redshift, I am also able to connect from my private subnet server to Redshift, But I am not able to connect from my local machine to Redshift and I am connected to my OpenVPN.
What I have missed?

Can anyone let me know the steps to connect on-premise SQL client to RDS hosted on private subnet within VPC? Bastion host or public subnet aren't allowed. It has direct connect option with nlb or through route 53 able to connect to rds.
Expecting client to access rds dB on aws without ssh.
I have set up a VPC using a suggested approach as discussed on Linux Bastion Host Quick Start.
I have also created a Redshift cluster in one of private subnets and also created its dedicated security group with no rule restrictions. That is for both inbound and outbound rules for Redshift I am assigning all traffics and ports (0.0.0.0/0). I am even doing the same for the public EC2 instance on public subnet.
I can successfully ssh to my public bastion instances but from there I can not telnet to my Redshift endpoint.

I am not sure what is wrong with my configurations. In Redshift I have disabled both public access and VPC routing.
I assume that your situation is:
You have an Amazon Redshift cluster in a private subnet
You have a Bastion server in a public subnet of the same VPC
You wish to connect an SQL Client on your computer to the Redshift cluster
A way to do this would be:
Use Port Forwarding to connect to the Redshift cluster via the Bastion host
If you are using a Linux/Mac:
ssh-add keypair.pem
ssh -A ec2-user#BASTION-IP -L 5439:xyz.redshift.amazonaws.com:5439
(This says: Forward local port 5439 to the bastion, where is should send traffic to the Redshift cluster on port 5439)
If you are using Windows, then you can use Pageant and PuTTY
Then, configure your SQL Client to connect to Redshift with server=localhost and port=5439, together with your login credentials
If the above does not work, some things to check:
The Security Group on the Redshift Cluster should allow inbound connections on port 5439 from the Bastion (or from the whole VPC or from 0.0.0.0/0
The outbound rules on the Bastion should remain at their default setting of allowing all outbound traffic
If things are still going wrong, you can test the Redshift connection by installing psql on the Bastion and attempting a connection to Redshift. (Redshift was forked from PostgreSQL, so it behaves similarly).
I have a AWS RDS instance (PSQL), which is public accessible. For testing I attached a Security group that has on port 5432 all access 0.0.0.0/0. My VPC has a Internet Gateway attached and has the following
192.168.0.0/16 local
0.0.0.0/0 igw-0f41c33417cbccb8c
If I try to connect to the instance I get a network timeout and it seems my request is blocked.
But I dont find anything else that should block the connection
If it helps the VPC and the subnets are default and created for eksctl the major adaption I made was attaching a Internet Gateway
From inside the VPC I can access the RDS instance from outside (eg my local machine I can't)
I have two existing vpc's. One is shared services, and the other is the actual application servers. I have created a peer between the two vpc's, and added routes on each vpc, but still cannot ssh from bastian to app server from the shared services vpc.
Details:
shared services vpc cidr(172.31.0.0/16)
bastian server ip (172.31.5.84)
route added to main route table (10.2.0.0/16 -> vpc-peer-id)
app server vpc cidr (10.2.0.0/16)
ec2 subnet instance ip (10.2.60.4)
route added to main route table (172.17.0.0/16 -> vpc-peer-id)
added sg allow (22 tcp 172.31.0.0/16)
I also added the same route to the app server subnet but no change.
I am completely stumped atm for how to set this up or even work our where it is blocking. Any help would be appreciated.
To assist you, I did the following:
Started with an existing VPC-A with CIDR of 172.31.0.0/16
Created a new VPC-B with CIDR of 10.0.0.0/16
Created a subnet in VPC-B with CIDR of 10.0.0.0/24
Launched an Amazon Linux EC2 instance in the new subnet in VPC-B
Inbound Security Group: Allow SSH from 172.31.0.0/16
Created Peering connection:
Requester VPC: VPC-A
Acceptor VPC: VPC-B
Accepted peering connection (Did you do this on yours?)
Configured Route Tables:
The public Route Table in VPC-A: Route 10.0.0.0/16 to VPC-B
The private Route Table in VPC-B: Route 172.31.0.0/16 to VPC-A
Opened an SSH connection to an existing instance in VPC-A
From that instance, opened an SSH connection to the private IP address of the new instance (10.0.0.121)
Result: Instantly got a Permission denied (publickey) error because I didn't supply the private key. Getting an instant error messaged proved network connectivity (as opposed to hanging, which normally indicates a lack of network connectivity).
I then supplied the correct private key and tried to SSH again.
Result: Connected!
The complete flow is:
My laptop -> Instance in public subnet of `VPC-A` -> Instance in `VPC-B`
This had to use the peering connection because VPC-B has no Internet Gateway and I connected via the private IP address of the instance.
So, I recommend that you double-check that you have done each of the above steps to find where your configuration might differ (accepting the peering connection, configuring the security group, etc).
I have a VPC on AWS with a public and a private subnet. I've deployed an instance of OpenVPN appliance in the public subnet to access my EC2 nodes in the private subnet. As expected, with VPN I can access (for e.g. SSH into) any EC2 node that I manually create in the private subnet. But I can't access services (for example Elastic Search or RDS Postgres) that AWS creates in the same private subnet. (I did make sure all security groups are properly configured on the Postgres and RDS). What am I missing?
I use a similar setup when connecting to my private RDS instances via VPN. I apologize, I cannot comment since this account is new and I do not have the reputation, I will have to make assumptions.
Your security groups need to be VPC security groups, not ec2 security groups (if they are not already).
VPC SG 1 (ec2 Bridge): This group is assigned to your OpenVPN server and allows traffic on your Postgres port and private IP CIDR.
Here is an example of mine for MSSQL and MySQL (I have multiple tunnels):
VPC SG 2 (Dev RDS Bridge): This has to allow traffic from VPC SG 1
Here is an example group I made just made for Aurora MySQL:
Finally, assign VPC SG 2 to your RDS Instance:
Now you should be able to talk to your RDS over your VPN connection while the RDS remains closed to the public. The process is similar for other AWS private resources.
