updating chart.js in ractive - chart.js

For some data visualisation I use ractive and chart.js. The initial drawing works great, but I can't find a way to update the chart automatically when my data changes. So far I got (simplified):

Of Course I get an error in line chart.data.labels.push(label);, and also I'm quite sure that I would need my computed values in the onrenderfunction, not the initial Dataset. But I really have no clue how to get those into the update function, or if this function is the correct approach at all...

If you are working with 3rd party plugins I would recommend to use Ractive's decorators.
This post on ractivejs-and-jquery-plugins shows you a starting point how to implement a decorator based on a fileupload control.
In your case I would recommend to build a decorator with the data as parameter and do not forget to implement the UPDATE function (where in your case you gonna call the update method with the new data for your chart)

As I could not figure out how to write my own decorator for Chart.js I thought I post the solution that worked for me. I do not think it's best practice and for sure decorators would be a better way (therefore I do not mark this solution as correct answer), but it works:

chart.js animate data through time? [duplicate]

I created an basic bar chart using chartjs and it works fine. Now I want to update the values on a time based interval. My problem is that after I created the chart, I do not know how to update its values correctly...

in the test code, I am updating the values with datasets[0].data- is this the right way to do it? The problem with this is that everytime I call chart.Bar(), the values are reset to 0 then animated to the random value (like I am recreating the chart). This way, all animations are always from 0 to value which looks strange. I would expect that if I update a value from 50 to 10 the bar would go down to 10 from 50 and not setted to 0 then animated to 10.
I did not found anything in the docs about this... am I doing something wrong or this is impossible with this library?

As of Nov 2013, there seem to be very few options for updating charts.
There is a good example here (duplicated below) of adding new points to a line chart. Still kind of jumpy but not too bad. However, I think the effect probably depends on the chart you are using.
It does look like this is somewhere in the development pipeline. I don't see any indication of a release date yet though: https://github.com/nnnick/Chart.js/issues/13 [Closed as of Jul 26, 2014]

chart.update()
Delete existing chart using chart.destroy() and create new chart object.
The simplest way is to replace the canvas element and then call new Chart() again:

My solve was to actually store the charts outside of the state of Vue. Store the charts in a const variable in like a utility.js file. Then I was able to simply do this:

You are telling chart.js which custom key it needs to look for for the y axis but not for the x axis. So chart.js is looking for the x key in the object.
Changing your parsing config to include the xAxisKey: 'time' will fix your issue.

chart.js - Axis lables

I am trying to figure out how to create some custom axis lables for my data. Im trying to plot time series data. Im using an XY scatter graph to do this. My data collection may be irregular..
My time is recorded as Unix Epoch time. ( ms after 1 Jan 1970 ). I'd like to be able to put human readable dates/times on the x axis. rather than display the epoch time. How would this be best approached?

All you have to do is to add the custom tick callback.
You can go through this in the chartjs documentation. Here have a look: link.
The callback provides you the value of each label. You can edit it and return the edited value.

Chart JS Fill Between two lines

I am looking for a way to fill between two lines with Chart.js so that it would look like this. I have looked and everything seems to talk about filling between two lines across zero. I also need other lines to fill all the way down like normal. Is this something chart.js can do?
Here is a solution that uses a plugin to fill between two datasets. Supports all line styles and fill shading between multiple lines. To fill between a dataset, use the custom param fillBetweenSet to tell a dataset to fill the area between another dataset.

Styling Bars and Lines with Chart.js

We have been using Chart.js for several months now and like the power it gives us with ease of programming. One of the things we would like to start adding to the charts produced from Chart.js is a little nicer styling of the charts we generate. Most of the charts we are using are bar charts, with a few line charts thrown in.
When I use the term "styling" what I am really talking about is making the bars or lines look a little nicer. Specifically I would like to add a drop shadow behind the bar and line charts, and maybe even a bevel to the bars.
I've looked through many questions, and can't seem to find what I am looking for. I've also done some experimenting myself by modifying the Chart.js file to add a drop shadow and blur to the javascript, but I'm not getting it added in the correct place. I put these changes inside of the Chart.Element.extend draw function:

I put it right before the ctx.fill() and it almost does what I want. The result is I get a drop shadow that looks pretty good on both the bar and line charts I am drawing, but I also get a drop shadow on the labels for the x and y axes, which does not look good. I'd like to have the drop shadow on just the bars and the lines, not on the labels.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I am not experienced with javascript, but have been able to pull off quite a bit of coding I wouldn't otherwise be able to do without the help of everyone on Stack Overflow.
