I need to append a string stored in DB. e.g ?linkappend which is stored as a DB object link_append to all ebay links that will be displayed in a page. I think I should use template tags but not sure how to go about it.
You say that link_append is an object in the database? How is it stored? How does your view look like?
Because, if link_append is just represented by a ModelField, then it should be fairly easy to append it to the links by adding it as a template-variable like so:
The part after "?" {{ obj.link_append }} does place the content of that ModelField in the GET-part of the link.

It has been 2day i am trying to figure out how to do that. I am a novice so please give as detailed explanation as possible.
I am doing this in my views.py
dict1 = simplejson.dumps(dict1)
return render_to_response('main_page.html', {
'js_testsuite':testsuite_dict,
'js_testset':js_testset,
'dict1':dict1})
In main_page.html
{% if js_testsuite %}
<select id="testsuites" name="testsuite" onchange="setOptions(document.selection.testsuite.selectedIndex);">
{% for key, value in js_testsuite.items %}
<option value={{ value }} name="testsuite">{{ key }}</option>
{% endfor %}
</select>
{% endif %}
In setoptions.js, which contains the function setOptions(value), to which i am passing selected index of the select box, and using this value i have to set the second select box and the data for this select box has to come from the views.py given above.
Also, I tried doing
var value_from_django = {{ dict1 }};
what are the other things im missing. Could you please provide a detailed explanation on this. I had been trying this for 2 days.
Is there a way in which I can pass the value from django views to the javascript directly bypassing the django template?
Can I pass the information from django views to the html template and then to the javascript?
The javascript I am referring to is a simple javascript not jquery.
Thanks for your support,
Vinay
You cannot pass values to javascript bypassing the template, unless you use an ajax call to start a separate request or unless you do something very unusual like embedding the data in a response header (don't actually do this, it is not what response headers are for!). The response, which includes the header and the body (the body being the part generated by the template) is the sum total of the information your application provides to your client, so unless you generate an additional request and fetch an additional response with ajax, you have no other options.
If you don't want to do that, then your options for passing information to the javascript via the template are basically the following:
Using an inline tag, create properly formatted javascript dynamically via the templating system. The example line you have, var value_from_django = {{ dict1 }}; is essentially what I'm talking about here, except that I'm not sure you can pass a dict through from django to javascript like that, because django's text output of a dict in the template is unlikely to be exactly the correct formatting for a javascript variable declaration. So, instead you can...
Translate your data into JSON and put that into your template, and then process that with the javascript. (This is usually done with an ajax call, but there's nothing stopping you from injecting the JSON data into the initial template directly.)
Or populate your HTML with the data you want and then use javascript to locate the HTML tag containing the data and parse the data out.
If you are trying to pass simple variables like integers, it might be easiest to do it with the first or third options. If you are trying to pass a more complex data structure like a dictionary, you will probably be better off using JSON (that's what it's for!)
I would like to give you more detailed and concrete instructions, but for that you will need to post more detail about what exactly is going wrong with your current approach and what your desired functionality is.
By the way: if it is at all feasible to include jquery on this page and use that instead of trying to use basic javascript, you should do so. It will make your life much, much easier.
I'm a newbie in Django and in WordPress if you create a Post called "hello world" then the URL by default will be like
wordpress.com/2012/07/05/hello-world/
and if you create another post with the same name it will be
wordpress.com/2012/07/05/hello-world-2/
I want to achieve the same in Django and I was thinking to create a sample urlconf like this
(r'^articles/(\d{4})/(\d{2})/(?P<name>\w+)', 'article.views.article_detail')
and in the views break down the name and iterate through all the items and match the name.
But the problem with will be that I won't be able to reference posts dynamically. For e.g. if I was to link the a hello world post I would need to find out how many posts with the same name exist already and then append the additional number to it which is inefficient.
So what's the best way to do this in Django?
See the documentation for Django's {{ url }} template tag. It lets you pass it a view name and parameters, and automatically generates the correct URL for you.
You can take care of appending numbers to each post's name in the function that generates its slug - you could have a look at django-autoslug
I have a view that displays some movie data. I thought that it might be a good idea to have a view handle a an URL like movie-id/1234 to search for movie id 1234. Furthermore I would like to be able to enter the ID into a form and send that to a server and search for it. To do that I created a second entry in the urls.py file shown below.
urlpatterns = patterns('',
url(r'movie-id/(?P<movie_id>.+?)/$', 'movieMan.views.detailMovie'),
url(r'movie-id/$', 'movieMan.views.detailMovie', name='movieMan.detailMovie.post'),
)
So if I want to pass data to my view either via a URL or a GET or POST request I have to enter two urls or is there a more elegant way? In the view's code I am then checking if there is any GET data in the incoming request.
To make the second url usable with the template engine, where I wanted to specify the view's url using the {% url movieMan.detailMovie.post %} syntax I had to introduce a name attribute on this url to distinguish between these two.
I am not sure if I am thinking too complicated here. I am now asking myself what is the first url entry good for? Is there a way to get the URL of a movie directly? When do these kinds of URLs come into play and how would they be generated in the template ?
Furthermore I would like to be able to enter the ID into a form and
send that to a server and search for it.
Is this actually a search? Because if you know the ID, and the ID is a part of the URL, you could just have a textbox where the user can write in the ID, and you do a redirect with javascript to the 'correct' URL. If the ID doesn't exist, the view should return a Http404.
If you mean an actual search, i.e. the user submitting a query string, you'll need some kind of list/result view, in which case you'll be generating all the links to the specific results, which you will be sure are correct.
I don't think there is a more elegant way.
I did almost the same thing:
url( r'^movies/search/((?P<query_string>[^/]+)/)?$', 'mediadb.views.search_movies' ),
The url pattern matches urls with or without a search parameter.
In the view-function, you will have to check whether the parameter was defined in the url or in the query string.
I am using "url" tag in my template and everything works fine, except I cant capture anything thats behind it. Since I have multiple filters on that page, that are kept via GET request in the url, I need to be able to apend them to it. What happens is, that when I select one filter url will change to some/url/?f=1, then when I select another filter previous filter will get overriden, since the url is just some/url without request.
Here is a piece from urls.py:
url('^products/$', products_list, name = 'products_list'),
Is there anyway to modify it so the url tag will capture the GET request? Or do I need to create a filter which will add it there?
Any help is appreciated
Regards
There is no way to generate a query string using the url tag. If you need to add a query string to the output then do it manually, e.g. {% url foo bar %}?var={{ val|urlencode }}.
I use django-paginaton app and I'm very glad to use it. Now I need feature, that I don't know how to implement. I have list of elements, that paginated by django's paginator. I have one element with specified id, that I should show, but I don't know what page contains it. I need mechanism jump to the page, that contains my element.
I think it's a good idea if django-pagination will support this transparently and automatically. For example, I set special context variable page_by_id to X and if page is None, it will be defined to the value, that contains my X element.
What do you think about this mechanism?
May be there is another clean way to do this?
This is for continue of this questions:
Django pagination and "current page"
Django Pagination - Redirecting to the page an object is on
At least, I wrote patch for django-pagination that provide 2 features:
Get number of page by id of element inside paginated list;
Possibility to rename default parameter 'page' to another value for
using it inside template;
This works transparently by adding 2
optional parameters in autopaginate templatetag:
{% autopaginate object_list paginated_by orphans page_by_id parameter_name %}
