Can't run VS 2013 projects even though the redistributable is already installed? - c++

I'm trying to use VS 2015 to build and run a project that was originally created in VS 2013. When I do, it gives me an error message saying I can't run it because MSVCR120D.dll is missing from my computer. I tried to install the VS 2013 redistributables from the microsoft website, but that didn't help. Looking in my System32 folder revealed that even after installing it, all I have is MSVCR120.dll, not MSVCR120D.dll. I also tried downloading the .dll file on its own from opendll.com and placing it in the correct folder, but that did not solve the issue. What do I do here? I have no idea how I'm supposed to install this .dll I need.

VCRUNTIME140_1.dll missing after building solution with c++

I've created a small text adventure. I've built the solution with Visual Studio Community 2019 using Release and x64 settings. I've zipped up the *.exe file along with the other generated files and sent them to another pc that doesn't have VS installed and the error you see in the image came up. I've searched my pc and the file exists in a couple of different folders, one of them being system32 so i don't know where to place the file on the new pc.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
Per #user4581301's comment, the answer is to download a current Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable for the appropriate architecture (i.e. x64).
As I already had a 2019 of the redestributable installed, I had to install the corresponding 2015-2019 x64 distributable.
I have tried the most voted solution and was still missing it. Found out that MS actually has a different version of VC redist inside Visual Studio download page. Look inside the Other Tools section. After installing that, one missing DLL was added.
I was getting the same error and installed VCRUNTIME140_1.dll file and put it in the MySQL Shell 8.0 bin file.
Problem solved.
I was also facing this issue. The below solution worked for me.
Solution:
Download the VCRUNTIME140_1.dll file
Place it in the path - C:\Windows\System32
Check if it solves your problem.
Download and install both the x86 and x64 versions of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 - 2019 Redistributable here

How to fix the error "Windows SDK version 8.1" was not found?

I recently updated visual studio 2015 and now, when i try to build any project it always fails and i get the error

I retargeted the solution as it said, and the problem persisted, even though the retargetting was completed.I decided to install visual studio 2017 because of this, and, lo and behold, it did the exact same thing.I'm also using windows 7.

I faced this problem too. Re-ran the Visual Studio 2017 Installer, go to 'Individual Components' and select Windows 8.1 SDK. Go back to to the project > Right click and Re-target to match the SDK required as shown below:
I installed the 8.1 SDK's version:

It used 1GB (a little more) in the installation.

Another way (worked for 2015) is open "Install/remove programs" (Apps & features), find Visual Studio, select Modify. In opened window, press Modify, check
Languages -> Visual C++ -> Common tools for Visual C++
Windows and web development -> Tools for universal windows apps -> Tools (1.4.1)
and Windows 10 SDK ([version])
Windows and web development -> Tools for universal windows apps -> Windows 10 SDK ([version])
and install. Then right click on solution -> Re-target and it will compile
I had win10 SDK and I only had to do retarget and then I stopped getting this error. The idea was that the project needs to upgrade its target Windows SDK.
I realize this post is a few years old, but I just wanted to extend this to anyone still struggling through this issue.
The company I work for still uses VS2015 so in turn I still use VS2015. I recently started working on a RPC application using C++ and found the need to download the Win32 Templates. Like many others I was having this "SDK 8.1 was not found" issue. i took the following corrective actions with no luck.
I found the SDK through Micrsoft at the following link

I located my VS2015 install in Apps & Features and ran the repair.
I completely uninstalled my VS2015 and reinstalled it.
I attempted to manually point my console app "Executable" and "Include" directories to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Kits\8.1 and C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v8.1A\bin\NETFX 4.5.1 Tools.
None of the attempts above corrected the issue for me...

Finally what resolved the issue for me was:
Uninstalling and reinstalling VS2015.
Locating my installed "Windows Software Development Kit for Windows 8.1" and running the repair.
Checked my "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Kits\8.1" to verify the "DesignTime" folder was in fact there.
Opened VS created a Win32 Console application and comiled with no errors or issues
I hope this saves anyone else from almost 3 full days of frustration and loss of productivity.
Grep the folder tree's *.vcxproj files. Replace <WindowsTargetPlatformVersion>8.1</WindowsTargetPlatformVersion> with <WindowsTargetPlatformVersion>10.0</WindowsTargetPlatformVersion> or whatever SDK version you get when you update one of the projects.
For me in the Project Properties Settings General->Target Platform -> Change Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 solved the issue
Install the required version of Windows SDK or change the SDK version
in the project property pages
or
by right-clicking the solution and selecting "Retarget solution"
If you do visual studio guide, you will resolve the problem.
I encountered this issue while trying to build an npm project. It was failing to install a node-sass package and this was the error it was printing. I solved it by setting my npm proxy correctly so that it could reach the npm repo
PROBLEM: I ONLY get this compile-time "Windows SDK version 8.1 not found" error ( and a few other very-hard-to-resolve-nuisance errors -- cannot list them all ) when I export a project from an old version of MS Visual Studio (VS) to the new MS VS (2017), using the new MS VS export/"One-way Upgrade" feature.
SOLUTION: I have since learned to not use this export/upgrade feature and instead just create the new project from scratch -- using all my old source files, of course. Only my project settings have to be rebuilt, to be clear.
This is a bit of a pain, and a shame the export/upgrade feature won't work properly like it used to, but this is is actually easier and faster in the long run. MUCH better than working through a list of spurious errors that really should not have arisen in the first place.

Visual Studio 2015 OpenGL freeglut.dll Linker Error

So I was playing around with the OpenGL and C++ in Visual Studio 2013 Pro (from dreamspark for students) and everything was fine. Then I decided to try out Visual 2015 Community. After upgrading and rebuilding the project, I'm getting the LNK1104 error with "cannot open freeglut.lib".
I've searched through the properties and everything seems fine. I originally installed OpenGL libs with PM by installing nupengl.core and adding #include"GL\glut.h". I tried to do some #defines as someone pointed out in this and this thread, but it's probably outdated by now and I'm not able to follow the instructions at some points. I reinstalled the nupengl.core too.
I'm not really fluent with Visual, I've been using it for like a year now and I'm trying my best to understand it more. If anyone has an answer, please make it as clear as possible. Cheers! :D
And of course, sorry for language mistake, as I'm not a native english speaker!
Resolution

Why NupenGL 0.0.0.1 had this issue?
The nupengl.core nuget package installs some files (header and lib) that are necessary to run your OpenGL GLUT application.
In its 0.0.0.1 version, it put out the lib files (including freeglut.lib) under the v120 folder. Visual Studio 2015 looks in the v140 folder.
To resolve the issue in that version, you could create another copy of the folder and name it v140, or change the "Platform Toolset" setting in your Visual Studio 2015 project from "Visual Studio 2015 (v140)" to "Visual Studio 2013 (v120)".
There is no need to do that though since this has been fixed in the 0.1.0.1 version of nupengl.core nuget package.

Missing opencv_world300.lib while using visual studio 2015/2013

I'm trying to install OpenCV 3.0.0 to my project within MS Visual Studio 2013/2015 (two PCs). I'm doing same things as in tutorial described here http://tinyurl.com/cbdvucw, but on both PCs I get an error, saying that 'opencv_world300.lib is missing, try to reinstall programm'. I sure that it's not missing, I've set system variables: OPENCV_DIR: 'D:\opencv\build\x86\vc12' and added to PATH: '%OPENCV_DIR%\lib'. Restarted my computer, but Visual Studio says error above. All project properties are the same as in the tutorial. What should I do to solve this problem? Thanks.
You need to build the library again
Go back to cmake step and activate Build_opencv_world

MSVCP100D.dll missing

When I try to debug my C++ application I get the error
The program can't start because MSVCP100D.dll is missing from your
computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
I found someone with a similar problem here: Remote debugging C++ on the Windows Server 2008 platform with VS2010; MSVCP100D.dll missing however the solution given there doesn't seem to show up when I go to the solution properties.
Would reinstalling Visual Studio fix this problem?
Usually you don't want MSVCP100D.dll on your system. It's for debugging purposes only. If you get this error for your release build you must make sure that you didn't accidently add a 'Debug'-tagged Project Output to your setup project.
If you really need to debug your software on a remote machine, I suggest you do the following:
Create a new Setup project called 'CRTDebug100Setup' and add the following Merge Modules (found under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Merge Modules):
Microsoft_VC90_DebugCRT_x86.msm
policy_9_0_Microsoft_VC90_DebugCRT_x86.msm
Build, and deploy on your computer to be debugged!
Reinstalling Visual Studio fixed the problem.
This can also occur if Generate Debug info is not set to No
Configuration Properties -> Linker -> Debugging -> Generate Debug info
Followup on l33t's answer above (tried to revise it but it did not seem to appear).
Added later by gpicher 10 Jan 2012: I believe those .msm packages would be for a 9.x version of the DLL in question, not a 10.x version. I resolved a similar problem I had by making a setup project with Visual Studio 2010 installed on a 64 bit Windows installation, using the merge module Microsoft_VC100_DebugCRT_x86.msm in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Merge Modules. There's a similar x64 version of the .msm if the application showing the error dialog is a 64 bit application. In this case a third party was providing me a debug build of their application in order to develop and test new plugin code against, so I couldn't change build settings, and wanted the debug functionality.
Find the Visual Studio 2010 install iso file.
Extract cab44.cab file from the ISO.
Then extract file "F_REDIST_DLL_APPLOCAL_msvcp100d_x86" from the .cab file using 7z.
Rename the file to msvcp100d.dll.
For x64 version. The cab file name is cab26.cab and the file name is F_REDIST_DLL_APPLOCAL_msvcp100d_x64.
For similar issue such missing msvcr*d.dll for another visual studio version. Here is the way I used to find the answer:
Find the Visual Studio ISO.
Extract all the .cab file.
7z.exe t *.cab > filelist.txt
gvim filelist.txt
searching for the interested file name. Hope this helps.
