I want to test how a project generated by cookiecutter behave with multiple invocation patterns.
Given the following generated project

Unable to "get around" the operating system check in an imported Python module

I am trying to write unit tests for a Python application and I want to write a unit test to verify that the entries in a dictionary are correct (based on the OS).
PROBLEM: I cannot mock the os that I am on. I just want to mock the os so that I can verify that the entries of a dictionary are valid. I have tried monkey patching, mocking and a patch but nothing works at the moment (which I do not doubt is due to my limited knowledge of unit-testing). The current code that I have is below. Any (detailed) help as to why this is not working or what I am doing wrong/should be doing instead will be greatly appreciated! :D
So I have:

How do I ignore static files of a particular app only with collectstatic?

Just to get this out of the way, if at all possible, I'd like to do this without nesting them all inside a directory with the app's name inside the app's static folder, it feels redundant. If it's the only way then such is life.
I am using:
STATICFILES_FINDERS = (
'django.contrib.staticfiles.finders.FileSystemFinder',
'django.contrib.staticfiles.finders.AppDirectoriesFinder',
)
and:
STATICFILES_STORAGE = 'pipeline.storage.PipelineCachedStorage'
which compiles the JS and SASS when running collectstatic. These are both located in the APP_ROOT/static/ directory.
The only 'problem' is that it brings along all the source sass and js files alongside it. At some point I'm going to be pushing this all to S3 and I'd like to avoid that if possible.
I found that if you run:
python manage.py collectstatic -i sass -i js
It still compiles the JS and CSS files I specified, while leaving the rest of the 'source' files out. Unfortunately, it also ignores every js file in /admin/ as it matches /admin/js/ etc. I don't even know if that's likely to be a problem for this particular project, but I can foresee in the future other apps where I definitely will want to include static js/css kept in an app.
What I'd like to be able to do is something like:
python manage.py collectstatic -i app_name/sass -i app_name/js
And as I mentioned at the top the easy solution is just to prefix my static files in the folder with app_name/, much like how django.contrib.admin does it. At this point however, you end up with a directory structure of PROJECT_ROOT/app_name/static/app_name/[js|sass|img|data]/ and I think it should be possible to avoid the redundancy.
Then again, maybe it's the best option, so as to guarantee avoiding conflict with other apps?
I've looked into writing custom storages and finders, and I think it's possible to roll my own. I wanted to check here though first, to see if this is a problem someone else has solved, or, to get a reality check if the overwhelming response is to just add the prefix directory.
If I was to roll my own, the path I think I would take would be extending django.contrib.staticfiles.finders.AppDirectoriesFinder and overriding list(). I'm not yet positive this approach would work, I need to more trace how things progress from the collectstatic management command, so if anyone has done this or something simlilar before, or knows why it will/won't work, any help is appreciated.

I'm new to django-pipeline, but I believe it now has pipeline.finders.FileSystemFinder and pipeline.finders.AppDirectoriesFinder to do exactly this.

Note that at the time of writing, this results in empty compressed/minified content when DEBUG==True, see https://github.com/cyberdelia/django-pipeline/issues/418. I assume this will be fixed in future versions of django-pipeline.

How to test custom django-admin commands

I created custom django-admin commands
But, I don't know how to test it in standard django tests
If you're using some coverage tool it would be good to call it from the code with:

You should make your actual command script the minimum possible, so that it just calls a function elsewhere. The function can then be tested via unit tests or doctests as normal.

This works when your django-command is used in a manner like this:
$ python manage.py my_command my_file.txt
A simple alternative to parsing stdout is to make your management command exit with an error code if it doesn't run successfully, for example using sys.exit(1).
You can catch this in a test with:
with self.assertRaises(SystemExit):
call_command('mycommand')
I agree with Daniel that the actual command script should do the minimum possible but you can also test it directly in a Django unit test using os.popen4.
From within your unit test you can have a command like
fin, fout = os.popen4('python manage.py yourcommand')
result = fout.read()
You can then analyze the contents of result to test whether your Django command was successful.

Configure Django to find all doctests in all modules?

If I run the following command:
>python manage.py test
Django looks at tests.py in my application, and runs any doctests or unit tests in that file. It also looks at the __ test __ dictionary for extra tests to run. So I can link doctests from other modules like so:

If I want to include more doctests, is there an easier way than enumerating them all in this dictionary? Ideally, I just want to have Django find all doctests in all modules in the myapp application.

I solved this for myself a while ago:

This allowed me to put per-module tests in their own test.py file, so they didn't get mixed up with the rest of my application code. It would be easy to modify this to just look for doc tests in each of your modules and run them if it found them.
Use django-nose since nose automatically find all tests recursivelly.

I'm not up to speed on Djano's testing, but as I understand it uses automatic unittest discovery, just like python -m unittest discover and Nose.
If so, just put the following file somewhere the discovery will find it (usually just a matter of naming it test_doctest.py or similar).
Change your_package to the package to test. All modules (including subpackages) will be doctested.

How can I call a custom Django manage.py command directly from a test driver?

I want to write a unit test for a Django manage.py command that does a backend operation on a database table. How would I invoke the management command directly from code?
I don't want to execute the command on the Operating System's shell from tests.py because I can't use the test environment set up using manage.py test (test database, test dummy email outbox, etc...)
The best way to test such things - extract needed functionality from command itself to standalone function or class. It helps to abstract from "command execution stuff" and write test without additional requirements.
But if you by some reason cannot decouple logic form command you can call it from any code using call_command method like this:

Rather than do the call_command trick, you can run your task by doing:

The advantage here being that if you've used additional options and OptParse, this will sort the out for you. It isn't quite perfect - and it doesn't pipe outputs yet - but it will use the test database. You can then test for database effects.
I am sure use of Micheal Foords mock module and also rewiring stdout for the duration of a test would mean you could get some more out of this technique too - test the output, exit conditions etc.
