zlib c++ char size of buffer for compression - c++

I'm using this function for zlib compression and wondering whether the outbuffer variable should be set to a specific size? Is it limiting the char array to whatever I put in here? Is there a limit to the length I can put in here? Would it make sense to just convert it to std::string, since Im compiling in c++?

That is what deflateBound() is for. After your deflateInit2(), you can call it with the input size and it will give you a bound on the possible expansion when compressing incompressible data.
By the way, calling deflateInit/deflateInit2 twice on the same structure will result in a large memory leak. Just call one of them once.

C++ Sending PNG File via HTTP

I'm trying to create a webserver to learn how HTTP functions. I am trying to send a png file to the browser, however the image successfully makes it.
Here is my png sending code:

Once the server should have sent the image, it shows up as the missing image icon.
I have checked to make sure that all the bytes are being sent, and that the image is being loaded.

There are quite a few mistakes in your code.
You are still trying to process the file if is_open() returns false.
You are using \n\r when you need to use \r\n instead.
You are using strcat() to append data to allData. When appending binary data, like a PNG, strcat() will truncate on the first 0x00 byte encountered. You need to use memcpy() (or equivalent) instead.
Your call to send() is sending data when it should be sending allData instead. So you are you not sending the HTTP headers at all, and you are sending data using the wrong length.
You are assuming send() will send all of the data you give it in a single operation. That is almost never the case, especially fo large amounts of data. send() returns the number of bytes it actually accepted for sending, so you need to call it in a loop until all of the data has been accepted.
You are not sending an error message to the client if something goes wrong while preparing the file.
That being said, allData is actually unnecessary, and is a waste of memory. TCP is a byte stream, so you can send headers and data individually one after the other. How many times you call send() doesn't affect how the other party receives the data.
You might also consider minimizing memory usage further by changing data to be a fixed-sized buffer so you can send() the content of in while reading from it in smaller chunks.
Try something more like this instead:

Cannot Read Binary files in byte mode in C++

I am trying to read a binary file's data sadly opening in C++ is a lot different than in python for these things as they have byte mode. It seems C++ does not have that.

I want basically a clone of Python's methods of opening a file in 'rb' mode. To have to actual byte data of all of the contents (which is not readable as it has nonprintable chars even for C++. Most of which probably cant be converted to signed chars just because it contains zlib compressed data that I need to feed in my DLL to decompress it all.
I do know that in Python I can do something like this:

turns out that replacing the C++ Code above with this helps. However fopen is depreciated but I dont care.
What the Code above did not do was work because I was not reading from the buffer data. I did realize later that fopen, fseek, fread, and fclose was the functions I needed for read bytes mode ('rb').

You are declaring a second variable hiding the outer one. However, this inner one is only valid within the while loop's body, so the while condition checks the outer variable which is not modified any more. Rather do it this way:

Inflation of pdf stream using zlib blank sometimes

I am a beginner programmer trying to inflate text stream from pdfs. I have adopted and slightly altered some open source code which uses zlib, and generally it works very well. However, I have been testing on some different pdfs lately and some of the inflated streams are returning blank. Could anybody advise me as to why?
I have come across this question below which seems to address the same problem but does not really give a definitive answer

OpenSSL SHA256 Wrong result

I have following piece of code that is supposed to calculate the SHA256 of a file. I am reading the file chunk by chunk and using EVP_DigestUpdate for the chunk. When I test the code with the file that has content

I tried to write the hash generated by program as string using _snprintf but it didn't worked. How can I generate the correct hash and return the value as string from FileChecksum Function? Platform is Windows.
EDIT: It seems the problem was because of CRLF issue. As Windows in saving file using \r\n, the Checksum calculated was different. How to handle this?
MS-DOS used the CR-LF convention,So basically while saving the file in windows, \r\n comes in effect for carriage return and newline. And while testing on online (given by you), only \n character comes in effect.
Thus either you have to check the checksum of Test Message\r\nHello World\r\n in string which is equivalent to creating and reading file in windows(as given above), which is the case here.
However, the checksum of files,wherever created, will be same.

It seems the problem was associated with the value of length I passed in EVP_DigestUpdate. I had passed value from strlen, but replacing it with bufferS did fixed the issue.

As for the wrong checksum earlier, the problem was associated in how windows keeps the line feed. As suggested by Zangetsu, Windows was making text file as CRLF, but linux and the site I mentioned earlier was using LF. Thus there was difference in the checksum value. For files other than text, eg dll the code now computes correct checksum as string

How to compress a buffer with zlib?

There is a usage example at the zlib website: http://www.zlib.net/zlib_how.html
However in the example they are compressing a file. I would like to compress a binary data stored in a buffer in memory. I don't want to save the compressed buffer to disk either.
Basically here is my buffer:

You can easily adapt the example by replacing fread() and fwrite() calls with direct pointers to your data. For zlib compression (referred to as deflate as you "take out all the air of your data") you allocate z_stream structure, call deflateInit() and then:
fill next_in with the next chunk of data you want to compress
set avail_in to the number of bytes available in next_in
set next_out to where the compressed data should be written which should usually be a pointer inside your buffer that advances as you go along
set avail_out to the number of bytes available in next_out
call deflate
repeat steps 3-5 until avail_out is non-zero (i.e. there's more room in the output buffer than zlib needs - no more data to write)
repeat steps 1-6 while you have data to compress
Eventually you call deflateEnd() and you're done.
You're basically feeding it chunks of input and output until you're out of input and it is out of output.

This is not a direct answer on your question about the zlib API, but you may be interested in boost::iostreams library paired with zlib.
This allows to use zlib-driven packing algorithms using the basic "stream" operations notation and then your data could be easily compressed by opening some memory stream and doing the << data operation on it.
In case of boost::iostreams this would automatically invoke the corresponding packing filter for every data that passes through the stream.
