C++ algebraic calculation - c++

I had to write a program to ease our burden in finding linear curve fitting for our physics lab works.
My program computes upto sigma xi and sigma (xi^2) correctly. I have used similar code for computing rest few values.
But Afterwards, It is displaying all values as 0.
I couldn't find any mistakes in the remaining part as the same codes i used worked before.

Please help me with this.

First off, neither code snippet you posted is correct. The appearance of working is not sufficient. The code is accessing outside the boundaries that are legal, and in C++ that means anything could happen at any time. It might appear to work sometimes and other times it might not.
However the most immediate reason why the first snippet probably doesn't appear to work is because you are incorrectly reusing the index i when you switched the loop declarations to use j:

This is one of the reasons that predeclaring the loop indices is a bad practice. You should always declare the loop variable in the loop itself. Had you done this, then there would not have been any i in the outer scope for you to accidentally use in the j loop.

While loops within while loops for a beginning programmer in C++

I'm in an introduction to C++ programming class. I am suppose to create a program that loops the whole program if a character y is inputted at the end of the program.
I cannot seem to get the loop to loop even when I input the value for y
I have defined the variables as follows:
char value, y;
float percent;
value=y;
y=value;
while (value==y)
It checks the condition the condition and runs the program the first time, however it does not loop.
The ending statement looks as follows:
"cin<< value;"
The brackets check out, too.
Is there a rule I'm missing about having multiple while loops within while loops (I have two other loops that work fine inside the bigger loop), or is it because I cannot have the "while (input==y)" as a condition?

I think you should do something like

It runs the loop once, checks input character at the end and repeats if y equals to the specified value.

And your condition is good, but if it loop once, its because the value doesn't change (maybe because the cin didn't work because of the syntax?)

While function doesn't work like I want it to

Had a new problem with the while function. As easy as it sounds, I still can't wrap my head around it.
Like my last program, this one closes unexpectedly after the correct and wrong messages.
I want this to loop after entering a number, so that the program won't stop.

Nope. While loops don't magically take effect at any point during execution of the program. You only enter a while loop when you've reached it from code above. Programs are executed top-to-bottom, generally.
You would need a loop around the entire program if you want to keep going round and round. Those whiles you have now should probably be ifs.
Merge the two while loops into one, while(true).
Put each previous while body into an if state with the clause from the old while in it.

in order to end your loop, do a break;.
You have to think of C++ programs as a sequence of instructions, like a recipe. while just means a loop: you check the condition. If true, you run the body. After running the body, you check only that condition again, and run the body if true. Whenever the condition is false at the start or end of the body of the while (the {} enclosed code after it), you end the loop and proceed to the next one.
The first loop runs, finishes, then the second loop runs in your code. Once the first loop exits, you do not go back into it just because the condition becomes true.
Understanding flow control is one of the "hard" steps of learning to program, so it is ok if you find this tricky.
There are many improvements you can do your code beyond getting it working -- there is, actually, little need for X at all. But baby steps! Once you get it working, you can ponder "how could I remove the variable X?".
Before making such fundamental changes to your program, you should get it working, and save a copy of it so you can "go back" to the last working version.
You want to wrap all that code in it's own while loop:
while (true /* or something */)

while (X == 0) //this should happen whenever X is equal to 0

}
At least put your second while loop inside the first one to get it working as intended. Otherwise your program has no reason to go back again.
Nevertheless it's not a good design.

Optimize my code? C++ Compare arrays & calculate prize

I'm doing this slot machine game where a 3x3 2D-array is being generated with random letters.
I have successfully made the game work as I want but I wonder if you have any tips on how I can optimize or improve my code.
What I've gotten my code to do:
Generate an 2D-array (3x3) and randomly assign chars out of 3
letters.
An "if" that will compare and see what elements in the array belong
to each other (same char next to eachother for getting
columns/rows/diagonals).
An "if else" that will take total amount of columns/rows/diagonals
and make a prize out of it, depending on total amounts of row in the
slot machine and the bet.
So I'm now wondering if you have any suggestions on how I can improve the "if" code where the program checks if there are any rows/columns/diagonals? The game works as it should but I just wonder if there's any way of optimizing it - Perhaps with a "for-loop"?
I also wonder if you have any tips on the "prize" code where the code calculates total amout of rows/columns/diagonals and multiplies that with the bet.
I mean, there must be a way to optimize this. If I was to do a 100x100 array, the code where the elements are compared would be awfully long :)
I'm new to C++ (this is a course) so I'm looking forward to optimize this.
PS! I'm not asking for a solution but rather suggestions/tips of methods I can use to optimize it.

To optimize, running a profiler would give you a lot of information. If you're talking about general guidelines to optimizing your application, here are some:
1 - use threads to process in parallel
2 - reduce cache miss by keeping the data properly aligned depending on the processing done on it. For instance, if you need to use the speed to process the position, keeping them both near each other in memory will reduce cache-misses.
ie:

3- Don't process what you don't need to process or user can't see. For instance, some stuff may not affect the current states - no need to process it (in graphics, we use scene management like octtrees but the same applies to all - if you don't need it, don't process it).
4- Reduce the amount of floating point operations.

About optimizing:
Don't optimize prematurely - it won't help anything. I'm too lazy to write about that, but search internet, read "Code Complete" and "C++ Coding Standards: 101 Rules, Guidelines, and Best Practices" books.
Don't waste - if optimization won't take more time and is at same readability level, than you can use it.
Optimize AFTER a speed problem arise.
About your problem:
You are absolutely right that there should be better ways to write a code. What you wrote is what workers do, but you need to be smart programmer to make it more easy.
But what you need is more knowledge about language.
Yes, there is a looping possibility for C++. For example following code checks whether a line contains same values:

Depends on the array size(s) as you mentioned. With small arrays the if statements may be more efficient than using a loop (or two nested) to iterate over all the elements (this is also called 'loop unrolling' and is considered a performance improvement).
To 'optimize' (I'd better say generalize) your code for any array sizes you should use for loops of course to iterate over the x/y indices.

In terms of speed, what you have is not going to be inefficient. If you are looking to generalize the code and make it scalable (e.g. if you wanted to add 2 more rows/columns), there are several things you could do (e.g. looping and a more mathematical form of prize calculation).
The looping has already been discussed, but the prize calculation could be simplified a bit using something like the following:

Since your multiplier is an exponent of 2, the math is fairly straight forward. SOMEMAXIMUMVALUE should be declared to be the maximum number of matching rows you expect. For a 3x3 setup, there would be 8 potential matches (3 rows, 3 columns, 2 diagonals), so SOMEMAXIMUMVALUE should be set to 8.

C++ simple If statement making the rest of the program not execute

I have an assignment where I must read from a file and perform various calculations on it and write the answer to an output file. Everything was going great until I came to this step:
"Reread the file and compute the sum of the integers in the file as long as the sum does not exceed 1000. Use a flag controlled loop structure."
My code snippet is as follows:

My variables have already been declared. when I take out the if statement the sum adds the last number and the sum then exceeds 1000. When the If statement is left in, the answers and cout statements are not executed and there are no compiler warnings or errors.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Since no one seems to want to give you a correct answer... (and
to be fair, it's hard to give a correct answer without actually
doing your work for you).
There are two issues in you code. The first is the requirement
that you use a flag. As I said in my comment, the idiomatic
solution would not use a flag, but there's no problem using one.
A flag is a boolean variable which will be tested in the
while, and will be set in a conditional in the loop, when you
find something that makes you want to leave the loop.
The second issue is that you are using num without checking
that the input has succeeded. You must check after the >>
operator. The idiomatic way of checking (and the only thing
that should ever be used by someone not experienced in the
language) is to treat the stream as if it were a boolean:
dataFile2 >> num;
if ( dataFile2 ) {
// Input succeeded...
} else {
// Input failed for some reason, maybe end of file
}
Since all operations on a stream return a reference to the
stream, it is usual to merge the test and the input:
if ( dataFile2 >> num ) {
// succeeded
} else {
// failed
}
(Personally, I find the idea of modifying state in the condition
of an if or a while horrible. But this idiom is so
ubiquitous that you should probably use it, for the simple
reason that that's what everyone expects.)
In pedagogical environments, it's probably acceptable to
consider any failure to be end of file, and just move the test
up into the while (except, of course, that you've been asked
to use a flag). In other contexts, you'll want to take into
account the fact that the failure could be due to a syntax error
in the input—someone inserted "abc" into the file where
you were expecting a number. There are a number of ways of
handling this, all of which are beyond the scope of what you are
trying to do, but be aware that after you've detected failure,
you can interogate the stream to know why. In particular, if
dataFile2.eof() is true, then the failure was (probably) due
to you having read all of the data, and everything is fine. (In
other words, failure to read a data is not necessarily an error.
It can be simply end of file.)
You don't seem to be using a flag variable, which could help in this case. Something like this should fix it:

Why am I getting this output?

Alright so I writing Conways Game of Life in C++, and so far I have only created the rule that allows users to create cells if it has 3 neighbors.

When I launched the program I entered in the coordinates so that I would have the gameboard depicted in the photo below, and the output wasn't what I expected, it should have made it so that the cell 2,1 would be alive, but in the output it remained dead. I am not sure why it is not working. Any help?

Several things to address, and while this is not an answer, it's too big for a comment. Please fix these then I will get back to you...
In gameboard() please arrange the code so that it consists of two for loops instead of all the couts. Example:

it's much more concise.
Second, in cells(), in the second for loop, you can use another nested for loop.
Third, I would avoid naming normal variables in ALL CAPS since that is generally reserved for preprocessor #defines.

Alright. It's an algorithmic issue. When you call calculate, it creates extra cells because it's not exactly one generation. It's a mix of two and three - it acts on cells you just created. Get what I'm saying? I explained this on GMail.
