"Error adding symbols: DSO missing from command line" just in ubuntu? - c++

I have a project that compiles succesfully in SuseLinux and Debian but it fails in Ubuntu.
The error message in Ubuntu is
undefined reference to symbol 'pthread_create##GLIBC_2.2.5'
[ERROR] /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0: error adding symbols: DSO missing from command line
I understand the error is produced because -lpthread is not declared at linking. The project links against rt,crypto and other system libraries but pthread is not explicitly declared.
What I do not understand is why the linking process fails in Ubuntu but not in other Linux systems.
The gcc versions in the systems are:
gcc version 5.2.1 20151010 (Ubuntu 5.2.1-22ubuntu2)
gcc version 4.7.2 (Debian 4.7.2-5)
Could the linking error be produced by gcc 5.x?

Clang compilation into sysroot with newer glibc

I'm trying to compile with a sysroot for Ubuntu 22.04 from a Ubuntu 20.04 image, and I'm having quite a bit of trouble, getting linker errors like these:

The exact same invocation works fine from a Ubuntu 22.04, using the exact same compiler and exact same sysroot.
Here's my setup:

Compile command:
clang++ --sysroot ../build_rootfs/x86_64_jammy test.cpp
Where ../build_rootfs/x86_64_jammy is a sysroot created with multistrap (I can share a minimized multistrap config if it's relevant, but considering the same sysroot works fine from Ubuntu 22.04, the sysroot seems to not be the issue.
Things I have tried:
Using lld--same result
Using clang 14, both from apt.llvm.org and from the binary tarball
Notably, GCC is able to compile it by passing -L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/9 -L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu (yes, even when compiling with --sysroot), but this seems strange as this is linking to libraries on the host system. Adding these flags does let the compilation succeed, but compiling from clang on 22.04 works fine without loading any of the system libraries (allegedly).
I assume this is an issue with glibc verisons, but I can't see how the host glibc version would matter when compiling from a sysroot, and it doesn't seem like any of the linker inputs are actually from the host system, so what's going wrong?

Compiling omniORB with minGW error : undefined reference to `wWinMain', even if -municode used

I'm newbee with minGW. I'm trying to compile omniORB 4.2.3 with minGW in order to link the libraries with my applications developed on Dev-CPP 5.11 . I use the same toolchain for both. The gcc version is 4.9.2 (tdm64-1).
I googled everywhere as possible and found the linker option -municode. But the error persists. I tried the wrapper solution too.
Here is the lines of the error :

Compiling: libm.so.6: error adding symbols: DSO missing, already included -lm

I try to compile a library, which works fine on a cluster. However, when I try to compile it locally on my private laptop I get the following error:
/usr/bin/ld: CMakeFiles/zfs.dir/zfsstrctrdblck3d.cpp.o: undefined reference to symbol 'tanhl##GLIBC_2.2.5'
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: error adding symbols: DSO missing
So, what I've tried is to google (obviously) and I've found that I have to include -lm flag when compiling with gcc or respectively mpicc. I tried several positions of the flag, but none of them could fix the error. What else can cause this error?
My mpicc version is:
gcc (Ubuntu 7.4.0-1ubuntu1~18.04.1) 7.4.0

Affdex SDK Compilation error with undefined reference to `Visualizer::Visualizer()'

I wish to setup Affectiva SDK 4.0.0 for Linux and hence, have started working on example apps from https://github.com/Affectiva/cpp-sdk-samples
I have Ubunutu 16.04, OpenCV 2.4.11, Boost 1.63, cmake 3.8.1, pre-installed gcc 5.5.0 and manually installed gcc 5.4.0 (because I could not find a proper setup for gcc 5.4.1 as required).
When I try to run below command to compile the code from video-demo folder:
g++ video_analyse.cpp -o video_analyse -std=c++11 -I$HOME/affdex-sdk/include -L$HOME/affdex-sdk/lib -I$HOME/sdk-samples/common -l affdex-native -l boost_program_options `pkg-config opencv --cflags --libs`
The error points to below line of code:
shared_ptr<PlottingImageListener> listenPtr(new PlottingImageListener(csvFileStream, draw_display));
And receive error:
/tmp/ccWtKCG0.o: In function `PlottingImageListener::PlottingImageListener(std::basic_ofstream<char, std::char_traits<char> >&, bool)':

The exact same error is received with gcc 5.5.0 as well.
If I comment everything starting from that line of code, then the compilation happens successfully.
Please guide me on this. Either on how to install the exact version of gcc 5.4.1 as expected by the SDK dependency OR anything which I might be missing.

Did upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 break the c++ linker?

I have a Linux-based application, running under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, that compiled, linked, and ran with no problem.
I recently upgraded my Ubuntu to 14.04 LTS and encountered problems compiling and linking the app.
The compilation problems were solved by manually modifying my local copy of Boost 1.48 in two files (include/boost/config/stdlib/libstdcpp3.hpp and include/boost/thread/xtime.hpp). At this point the app compiled successfully.
The problem I have is that the linkage fails with the error message:
c++: error: unrecognized command line option ‘-Wl’
I use CMake to enable compiling the app on multiple platforms. Here is the linker script generated by CMake. Note that the "-Wl" options are now inexplicably unrecognized by /usr/bin/c++:

Why doesn't the linker recognize "-Wl" commands? Did my upgrade to 14.04 LTS modify the linker software libraries? How can I get my app back up and linking?

Right at the top of this page is the following:
Earlier releases did not warn or error about completely invalid
options on gcc/g++/gfortran etc. command lines, if nothing was
compiled, but only linking was performed. This is no longer the case.
For example,
gcc -Wl -o foo foo.o -mflat_namespace
Now produces the following error
error: unrecognized command line option ‘-Wl’
error: unrecognized command line option ‘-mflat_namespace’
Invalid options need to be removed from the command line or replaced by something that is valid.
12.04 LTS packaged GCC 4.6, you've now jumped to 4.8 and -Wl on its own is no longer a valid option (or rather it never was, GCC is just more pedantic now).
As mentioned by others previously, it indeed turned out that my CMake script was injecting a lone, solitary, seemingly unnecessary "-Wl" via the CMAKE_EXE_LINKER_FLAGS setting:

When I removed this setting, the build succeeded. This oversight has been around a while, with the earlier version of gcc not minding. The latest gcc, however, is more pedantic and flagged it as an error.
