calling a function to obtain a model field value - django

I'm trying to get a unique value for a field (unique within the db column).
my code (other model fields omitted):

I'm getting name 'self' is not defined as an error.
What should I be passing to the function so that I can check the db column to ensure the value is unique -or- is there a built-in way of doing this?
What I've already tried or looked at:
setting unique=True for the field and using default=uuid.uuid4 - that gives me duplicate values and generates a validation error (SO link)
I'm aware of Django 1.8's UUID field, however i'm on 1.7

The problem lies in the following line (indented for better readability) as you already know and mentioned before:
dashboard = models.CharField(

In this part:
default=createDashboardCode(self)
you're calling the method createDashboardCode with the argument self. This is wrong, because you never pass self to a method as it is passed by Python. Whenever you call the method createDashboardCode you should do it this way:
createDashboardCode()
That's it, you're not passing the argument self explicitly.
You're getting an error "name 'self' is not defined" because self is not defined. There is no variable self in your code that you can pass to the method.
Now we're one step further, but your problem won't be solved if you just apply this slight change to your code.
The return value from the method createDashboardCode will be assigned to default. That's not what you really want. You have to assign a reference of the method to default:
default = createDashboardCode
Pay attention to the missing brackets. This will call the method every time a new instance of the model is created
Define a function:
def my_function():
print "hello"
and run it in the Python interpreter:
# once like this
my_function()
# and again like this
my_function
and you'll see the difference. That should help you to better comprehend this issue.

Flask WTForms Dynamic Default Value

I want to have a dynamic default value for a form. This will be whatever was inputted last time it was used.
I saw this answer that says to modify the default value after creation and then use the process() method. This works in updating it (I see the default displayed on the web page), but I get an error when the form submits saying The CSRF token is missing. In chrome devtools I see that the form has a input_id= 'csrf_token' and a value so not sure what is happening?

A related question, is this the best way to set a dynamic default? I tried

as the docs say
default – The default value to assign to the field, if no form or object input is provided. May be a callable.
so I think the function is a callable (tell me if I'm wrong!) but I get an error saying that the function is being used outside of the application context, so I think the function is being called too early. It seems like this would be a common task so guessing I have missed something.

For your 2nd question, if you're getting an error doing this
StringField('Enter your weight', validators=[DataRequired()], default=get_last_weight())
Try the following (removing your parentheses from your function call):
StringField('Enter your weight', validators=[DataRequired()], default=get_last_weight)

Django: How to use django.forms.ModelChoiceField with a Raw SQL query?

I'm trying to render a form with a combo that shows related entities. Therefore I'm using a ModelChoiceField.
This approach works well, until I needed to limit which entities to show. If I use a simple query expression it also works well, but things break if I use a raw SQL query.
So my code that works, sets the queryset to a filter expression.

The first error I get when trying to render the widget is: 'RawQuerySet' object has no attribute 'all'
I could solve that one thanks to one of the commets in enter link description here, by doing:
time_slots.all = time_slots.__iter__ # Dummy fix to allow default form rendering with raw SQL
But now I'm getting something similar when posting the form:
'RawQuerySet' object has no attribute 'get'
Is there a proper way to prepare a RawQuerySet to be used by ModelChoiceField?

Are you sure you actually need a raw query there? Just looking at that query, I can't see any reason you can't just do it with filter(location__city=city_id, available_reserves__gte=0, datetime_from__gt=datetime.datetime.now()).
Raw query sets are missing a number of methods that are defined on conventional query sets, so just dropping them in place isn't likely to work without writing your own definitions for all those methods.
I temporarily fixed the problem adding the missing methods.
The way I'm currently using the ModelChoiceField I only needed to add the all() and get() methods, but in different scenarios you might need to add some other methods as well. Also this is not a perfect solution because:
1) Defining the get method this way migth produce incorrect results. I think the get() method is used to validate that the selected option is within the options returned by all(). The way I temporarily implemented it only validates that the id exists in the table.
2) I guess the get method is less performant specified this way.
If anyone can think of a better solution, please let me know.
So my temporary solution:

Some troubles while converting authors id to User model

My Post model have list of authors id
class Post(Document):
authors_id = ListField(IntField(required=True), required=True)
But sometime I need to use default Django User class. How most rapidly I can do it?
(I'm using sqlite for users and sessions and MongoDB (mongoengine ODM) for other. Don't ask why:))
I was tried to write it:
def get_authors(self):
authors = list()
for i in self.authors_id:
authors.append(get_user(IntField.to_python(self.authors_id[i])))
return authors
...and it raises 'list index out of range' exception. (authors id not empty, really). What I'm doing wrong?
Not sure about the to_python method but since you are looping through the authors_id, there is no need to do
authors.append(get_user(IntField.to_python(self.authors_id[i])))
You should be good with
authors.append(get_user(IntField.to_python(i)))
Instead of
IntField.to_python(self.authors_id[i]))
I think you just need to do:
IntField.to_python(i)
In Python the 'for i in some_list' construction gives you elements of the list, not integer indexes.
You said that you were getting this error:
and unbound method to_python() must be called with IntField instance as first argument (got int instance instead)
I got a similar error from MongoEngine. In my case the problem was that I defined the field like this:
foo_id = IntField
The correct way to define it is:
foo_id = IntField()
When I added the parenthesis, the problem went away.

How to set django model field by name?

This seems like it should be dead simple, so I must be missing something. I just want to set the value of a field in my model instance by name. Say I have:
class Foo(Model):
bar = CharField()
f = Foo()
I want to set the value of bar by name, not by accessing the field. So something like:
f.fields['bar'] = 'BAR"
instead of
f.bar = 'BAR'
I've tried setattr but it doesn't persist the value in the database. I also tried going through _meta.fields but got various errors along the way.
If you modify the value via setattr, you need to remember to save the model after modifying it. I've been bitten in the past where I changed the values but forgot to save the model, and got the same result.
setattr(f, 'bar', 'BAR')
f.save()
We may have to see more code.
setattr(f, 'bar', 'BAR')
should work as this is how Django does it internally.
Make sure you are calling 'save', as well.

Django : Setting a generic (content_type) field with a real object sets it to None

Update 3 (Read This First) :
Yes, this was caused by the object "profile" not having been saved. For those getting the same symptoms, the moral is "If a ForeignKey field seems to be getting set to None when you assign a real object to it, it's probably because that other objects hasn't been saved."
Even if you are 100% sure that it was saved, check again ;-)
Hi,
I'm using content_type / generic foreign keys in a class in Django.
The line to create an instance of the class is roughly this :
tag = SecurityTag(name='name',agent=an_agent,resource=a_resource,interface=an_interface)
Where both agent and resource are content_type fields.
Most of the time, this works as I expect and creates the appropriate object. But I have one specific case where I call this line to create a SecurityTag but the value of the agent field seems to end up as None.
Now, in this particular case, I test, in the preceding line, that the value of an_agent does contain an existing, saved Django.model object of an agent type. And it does.
Nevertheless, the resulting SecurityTag record comes out with None for this field.
I'm quite baffled by this. I'm guessing that somewhere along the line, something is failing in the ORM's attempt to extract the id of the object in an_agent, but there's no error message nor exception being raised. I've checked that the an_agent object is saved and has a value in its id field.
Anyone seen something like this? Or have any ideas?

Update : 10 days later exactly the same bug has come to bite me again in a new context :
Here's some code which describes the "security tag" object, which is basically a mapping between
a) some kind of permission-role (known as "agent" in our system) which is a generic content_type,
b) a resource, which is also a generic content_type, (and in the current problem is being given a Pinax "Profile"),
and c) an "interface" (which is basically a type of access ... eg. "Viewable" or "Editable" that is just a string)

agent_object_id = models.PositiveIntegerField()

At a particular moment later, I do this :

The result of which is that before, the "resource" variable does reference a Profile, but after ...

In other words, while the value of t.resource_content_type has been set to "profile", everything else is None. In my previous encounter with this problem, I "solved" it by reloading the thing I was trying to assign to the generic type. I'm starting to wonder if this is some kind of ORM cache issue ... is the variable "self.resource" holding some kind proxy object rather than the real thing?
One possibility is that the profile hasn't been saved. However, this code is being called as the result of an after_save signal for profile. (It's setting up default permissions), so could it be that the profile save hasn't been committed or something?
Update 2 : following Matthew's suggestion below, I added
print self.resource._get_pk_value() and self.resource.id
which has blown up saying Profile doesn't have _get_pk_value()
So here's what I noticed passing through the Django code: when you create a new instance of a model object via a constructor, a pre-init function called (via signals) for any generic object references.
Rather than directly storing the object you pass in, it stores the type and the primary key.
If your object is persisted and has an ID, this works fine, because when you get the field at a later date, it retrieves it from the database.
However -- if your object doesn't have an ID, the fetch code returns nothing, and the getter returns None!
You can see the code in django.contrib.contenttypes.generic.GenericForeignKey, in the instance_pre_init and __get__ functions.
This doesn't really answer my question or satisfy my curiosity but it does seem to work if I pull the an_agent object out of the database immediately before trying to use it in the SecurityTag constructor.
Previously I was passing a copy that had been made earlier with get_or_create. Did this old instance somehow go out of date or scope?
