How to walk through nodes in XSL for-each? - xslt

How to visualize the following XML
<Root>
<name1>
<node1> some text </node1>
<node2> <node22/> <node23/> </node2>
</name1>
<name2>
<node1> some text </node1>
<node2> <node22/> <node23/> </node2>
</name2>
</Root>
The name of these node1, node12, node13, Root nodes are known, but name1, name2, etc. are unknown in advance.
The desired output should be a set of two tables for each name, one for node1 and other for node2.
My problem is that I can't iterate over nameX because I don't know the exact name of the node. In the example above I used nameX but it can be any valid name.

I couldn't find this specific scenario (guess I can`t describe it right in english).
The input XML looks something like this (multiple items inside "listOne" and "listTwo" of course:

Adding missing nodes to XML via XSLT

I'm using a tool to import XML files into Dynamics NAV, but some parties providing the XML files skip empty nodes. My tool (external) can not handle those situation so I want to include XSLT to add the missing nodes. The xslt works fine for 1 node, but adding multiple nodes does not work. So I must be doing something wrong.
I'm building an integration to Dynamics NAV to insert Sales Orders. The orders are delivered from multiple parties using a XML file. However some of the parties providing the XML do not list all nodes in their XML file, they skip the empty ones. I'm using a tool build within Dynamics NAV (Add-on from other vendor) to import those files. However some XML files go wrong because of the fact that some (empty) nodes are missing in the XML file. I know this is an issue within the add-on but I need a solution on short notice. So created an XSLT to add the missing nodes. It works fine with 1 missing node, but it is not able to add both missing nodes. I'm not that familiar with XSLT so most of the times it is trial & error. Perhaps someone can help me with this.
This is the XML file format that is provided, The nodes that are sometimes missing is the DeliveryParty node and the DeliveryAddress part.

Sometimes the DeliveryParty node is missing and other times the DeliveryAddress part including subnodes is missing. I created the following XSLT to add those nodes but as it is trail and error I need some help to fix this. I'm a novice to XSLT, I can so some small changes but I do not use it frequently so knowledge is fading away quickly.

Combining input XML to produce another XML output

Trying to build a POC that does the following:
Given a short input XML, take the values from it and insert them into a larger XML file of a known format.
So if this was my input XML:

</transaction>

And i'd have to take these values and insert them into this: MQ FTE Transfer Log message format
I'd have to insert the values in the transferSet node (timestamp) and metaDataSet.
What would the XSLT have to look like in order to get this done?

XPath relative path in expression

I am in 'group' node. From it, I want to find such 'item' node, that has 'id' attribute equals to current's 'group' node 'ref_item_id' attribute value. So in my case, by being in 'group' node B, I want 'item' node A as output. This works:

But this doesn't (gives nothing):
<xsl:value-of select="preceding-sibling::item[#id=#ref_item_id]/#description"/>
When I type:

I have '1' as result. So this attribute is for sure accessible, but I can't find path to it from XPath expression above. I tried many '../' combinations, but couldn't get it work.

This has to do with context. As soon as you enter a predicate, the context becomes the node currently being filtered by the predicate, and no longer the node matched by the template.
You have two options - use a variable to cache the outer scope data and reference that variable in your predicate

<xsl:value-of select="preceding-sibling::item[#id=$ref_item_id]/#description"/>
or make use of the current() function
<xsl:value-of select="preceding-sibling::item[#id=current()/#ref_item_id]/#description"/>
Your expression searches for an item whose id attribute matches its own ref_item_id. You need to capture the current ref_item_id in an xsl:variable and refer to that xsl:variable in the expression.
One more possible solution using xsl:key

Looking at the XML, if I assume that you have <item> and <group> as siblings and in any order.
Then a sample input XML would look like the following.

I would recommend you to use the following XSL and loop over specific nodes instead of nodes.

Here is a snip-it of the XML:

I want to get the single point value of 74.7. There are many groups with unique ID's and many Probes under that group with unique ID's each with values.

we can pick out that one item you're interested in.
Points to note:
The // part of the expression means that the search for Group nodes takes place throughout the whole tree, finding Group nodes at whatever depth they're at.
The [#id='9'] part selects those Group nodes with id of 9
The Probe[#id='1'] part immediately after that selects those children of the Group nodes it found where the id is 1, and so on.
<xsl:value-of select="/NetworkAppliance/Group[#id=9]/Probe[#id=1]/Value"/>
XSLT is just one of the tools in the box, and nothing without XPath.
the xpath for value of a node is /node/text()
So
<xsl:value-of select="Probe[#id='1']/text()"/>
