Assert is hanging instead of failing CukeJS test - assert

I have the following assertion...
promise.then(function() {
assert.ok(browser.query(addForm), "It should have the add form");

But when I try to see it go red, instead I get...
Possibly unhandled AssertionError: It should have the add form
and the test suite just fails to go any farther

Cucumber.js seems to have issues if anything is thrown within functions. I'm not sure which assertion framework your using, but I ran into a similar issue using Chai expects inside of a callback that I passed to then(). I worked around the issue by pulling the expect outside of the callback as shown here.

For instance, if you were using Chai and your code looked like this:

You could modify your code using a library that understood promises (such as chai-as-promised in this case) so that it would look like:

How can I use mockito to verify that a function has never been called, with any argument?

I want to verify that a function has never been called using mockito. I am aware of the verifyNever function, but that does not seem to work in my case, or I'm not using it correctly.
My test currently looks like this:

To me it seems like verifyNever won't work if the function has never been called, just that it has never been called with a specific argument. Is that correct? In that case, is there another way to test what I want?
The verifyNever examples from package:mockito's README.md cover your case:

So, in your case, assuming that databaseService is a Mock object, you should be able to use verifyNever(databaseService.searchPatient(any)); to verify that the .searchPatient method is never called, regardless of the arguments.
After trying to write a minimal reproducible example it turns out that the problem was that I read the output incorrectly.
In the following output I read the top row as the title for the failed test, when in fact it is the bottom row that is the name of the failed error than corresponds to the above output.

Spock Testing when method under test contains closure

I'm using grails plugin multi-tenant-single-db. Within that context I need to write a spock test in which we temporarily remove the tenant restrictions. Location is my Tenant, so my method looks like this:

The method runs as expected, but trying to put method under test coverage the error output suggests that:

Do I need to Stub this? The withoutTenantRestriction is a wrapper around my entire method logic.

Yes! You should be stubbing it as is created at run time not compile time.
You could stub it like below:
Your_Domain.metaClass.withoutTenantRestriction{Closure closure ->
closure.call()
}
This way your regular code will work in test cases. Also,as in withoutTenantRestriction it basically starts a new hibernate session, which doesn't matter much as now you have stubbed the closure, you could perform desired action in place of calling closure.call() only.
Also, same could be applied to withThisTenant.
In integration tests you don't need to stub it as is loading the whole environment.

What are unit testing strategies for D3JS?

I am completely new to D3JS and would like to understand the testing strategies for D3 JS.
To elaborate little more on question - consider I have a simple page that shows a line graph using a TSV file.

I have written unit tests to make sure the TSV file is getting generated correctly. But does it make sense to write a unit test to see if the data is getting rendered correctly? Isn't that more of a d3js unit test rather than unit test for my function?
So my question is - what tests should be considered for charts generated by d3js?
I think I got the answer to my own question. Will try to explain it here.
It is not possible to validate whether the graph is plotted correctly by JS function written using D3JS. For this we may have to use Phantom.js or similar framework as mentioned by Chrisopher. I was not worried about making sure D3JS is plotting graph correctly, as any ways it is D3JS functionality and my code can safely assume D3JS is doing its work.
My worry is more of whether the data passed to D3JS is correct and as per my requirement. It is very much possible to make sure the properties of the graph are set correctly by creating Spy objects. I am providing a sample unit test covering test cases for a JS code plotting a Circle using D3JS.

And it really seems to make sense. I have read the others' answers but I am little bit disagree with them. I think we not only check if right function is called or not but we can check much more than that. Checking only some function call are good at unit testing level but not enough. Such test cases written by developer will be based on developer's understanding like these functions are called or not. But whether these methods should be called or not, this thing can be only checked by going at another level because unlike other work, here are code is making something not returning something that can be just checked and make sure everything is correct.
We obviously don't need to check whether D3 is doing its work correctly or not. So we can use D3 inside our testing code. But D3 renders SVG and we can check things like if svg have elements where expected. Again it is not going to test whether SVG is showing and rendering properly or not. We are going to check if SVG have elements which are expected and they are set as expected.
For example:
If this is bar chart, we can check the number of bars. As in example in above link here it is check that.

Some people probably gonna say that we are going to use D3 inside testing code? Again we should remember that purpose of test writing here is not to test D3 but our logic and SVG code that is compiled in response to our code.
This is just a way and jasmine is something that is helping us in writing test, you can also go into more detail and in different scenarios. You can make domain and check datapoints width height to cross check if they result into data which were given to render.

Also I think I am still gone into detail. If only unit testing is required at different js functions level then there are a lot more things which can be tested without going into elements detail.
Testing strategy
The strategy I end up using to test d3.js code is to create helper functions to manage my data and settings. I then unit test these functions. So for charts I would check every functionality dealing with data, every function to set width, legends etc...
Concerning drawing functions it can get trickier but with testing frameworks such as buster.js it can be quite easy to implement these too. A good way of testing a chart would be to count the number of bars/lines in the page, check that legends are printing etc.
I would not try to check that the chart is visually the same because visually checking that the end result is the same is easiest. However, when writing the drawing functions, one should be very attentive to what happens on updates (will changing the data draw twice as many lines? are selectors right? ...)
Javascript testing
A great book on javascript testing is: Test Driven Javascript Development. It provides lots of examples and strategies to test javascript code. Most of them can be directly applied to d3.js code.
Tools
I recently looked for solutions for unit testing d3.js code and I ended up using the following tools:
buster.js
Buster.js is a very complete framework for unit testing javascript code in multiple browsers.
phantom.js
Phantom.js is a headless WebKit scriptable with a JavaScript API.
This means that it makes it easy to run automated tests on javascript without needing to use browsers such as chrome, safari etc..
EDIT: I would now use jasmine for unit testing and selenium (through the Saucelabs service maybe) for end to end testing.
Probably worth mentioning Jest snapshot testing. Jest/snapshots are popular for React UI components, as they're also difficult to test. With D3 you could generate an SVG take a snapshot and verify as your codebase evolves that you continue to generate the same output.

This test is untested
A snapshot can be any output a string "Foo Bar" a JSON object {foo: "bar"} etc.
Basically you have to run a test once that contains .toMatchSnapshot. Jest will then manage the generation and store a copy that it'll compare in future tests.
The concept is similar to VCR in Ruby testing. Record and replay.

Getting laravel & phpunit to send message when unit test fails

I am using a function that tests for existence of an array in each page. I am using laravel's function assertViewHas. This would be fine if I had a function for each page testing for this array existence, however it seems waste of time, when I could just have a foreach running the test for each page. However, if one of the page's fails the assertion, I won't know which it is, phpunit will just say the test has failed.
So, is there any way of writing the current $page in the fail error when running phpunit in the command line?

Duh... OK this does not answer your question, I didn't understand at first.
So, assertViewHas comes from Laravel's extending PHPUnit
vendor\laravel\Illuminate\Foundation\Testing\TestCase.php and basically checks if it's a view instance, if it's an array and just $this->assertEquals for each value.
assertEquals can have a custom message as a third parameter, so what you can do is modify your test, not using assertViewhas but assertEquals in a similar way as in assertViewHas (extending PHPUnit, not Laravel's testcase) and provide your custom message.

Having trouble getting NUnit's Assert.Throws to work properly

I could have sworn that I've used NUnit's Assert.Throws to determine whether or not a particular exception gets thrown from a method, but my memory has failed me before. I read this post here on SO, but it didn't answer my question, as I know the correct syntax, and I don't want to do anything with the exception that gets returned (I don't want to look at the Exception's members, though this could be useful down the road).
I wrote unit tests to prove my lack of understanding in the use of Dictionary, and couldn't get it handle the KeyNotFoundException that gets thrown. Instead of NUnit catching it and passing the test, I get an unhandled KeyNotFoundException error when I run. I verified that I don't have the VS IDE set up to break on thrown .NET exceptions.
I've tried this two ways:
Assert.Throws( typeof(KeyNotFoundException), () => value = prefs["doesn't exist"]);
and
Assert.Throws<KeyNotFoundException>( () => value = prefs["doesn't exist"]);
but both result in an unhandled exception. What am I missing here?

This is an old thread, but try turning off Enable Just My Code in Visual Studio under Tools->Options. With that on, the debugger is trying to be helpful and stops at the last possible point within your code before the exception gets swallowed.
Or, at least that's my understanding of it.
If you turn off Enable Just My Code, the Assert.Throws should work correctly.
The debugger is stating that your exception is not being handled by user code, which is technically true. To demonstrate, I'll use the sample test sgreeve provided

When you execute it, you will receive a warning in VisualStudio that the exception is unhandled in user code. If you look at the callstack, you will see something like

Because you have specified a delegate, the exception is happening within the "AnonymousMethod" that was created. This is being called by the .Net framework. The debugger is stopping because your delegate isn't handling the exception before it gets passed back to the framework. It doesn't care that further up the stack it might be handled in your code (perhaps since there is no way to guarantee that the external code will handle the exception correctly.)
To have VisualStudio see this as a handled exception, use the ExpectedException attribute and remove the delegate, like so:

After our conversation in the comments added to this answer, I suspect that the nunitit test runner is the problem here. I don't believe there's anything wrong with your test as I have no problem executing it either using NUnit GUI or the excellent Resharper test runner.
UPDATED ANSWER
After seeing your screen shot, I tried stepping through my test with the debugger and saw exactly the same prompt about the unhandled exception. If I carry on stepping past that error, the test passes when I reach the end of the assertion.
When I run the test in none-debug mode using either the NUnit GUI or the Resharper 4.5 test runner, the test passes as expected every time.
Sorry to ask the obvious question, but what are you executing your test with? i.e. which test runner?
