which centos image can I use on aws with vagrant? - amazon-web-services

When I configure vagrant with aws plugin to use a centos image, I get the following error message:
sudo: sorry, you must have a tty to run sudo.
read somewhere that this means user is prompted for password when doing a sudo command.
but that is weird because the username for this machine is root..
How can I resolve this?

Defaults requiretty is a default for sudo so you have to have an controlling terminal, and it has been deemed useless and will be removed someday. So you can remove that line using visudo.

Restart Apache in Lightsail Terminal

As I found a blocker in one approach to make a Django app production ready I've gone with a different approach documented here.
In particular, this question is about this step where it says «Restart Apache for the changes to be taken into effect» and has the following associated command
sudo /opt/bitnami/ctlscript.sh restart apache
Thing is, ctlscript.sh isn't in that folder but in /opt/bitnami/stack. Then, when running in that forder
sudo ctlscript.sh restart apache
I get this error
sudo: ctlscript.sh: command not found
The file is there so I thought it would be something related with permissions (as pointed here).
The script is in the right folder, so the problem points to incorrect permissions.
sudo chmod 755 ctlscript.sh
but running the command to restart Apache got me into the same "command not found" error.
"command not found" does not point to "incorrect permissions". You're getting errors because the script is not in your PATH. There's two ways you can go this
Discover and specify the full path.
Specify the current directory.
Method 1
Run
pwd
and you will get the full path. If you get /home/bitnami/stack, then, run
sudo /home/bitnami/stack/ctlscript.sh restart apache
Method 2
Run
sudo ./ctlscript.sh restart apache
and that will work too
The following worked for me (I was getting a command not found error too):
sudo /opt/bitnami/ctlscript.sh restart apache

The .xauthority file is not does not exist;hence via local ssh connection display from the GCP compute engine not working

explaining all that has been tried and double checked.
Set up on local windows machine:
Xming installed and running.
in ssh_config ForwardX11 is set to yes.
In VS code remote connection config the the Forward X11 is set to yes.
Set up on GCP compute engine with Debian / Linux 9 and 1 GPU[free tier]:
xauth is installed.
In the sshd_config file below is set:
X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10
X11UseLocalhost no
The sshserver has be restarted to ensure below setting are read .
from local workstation I fire gcloud compute ssh --ssh-flag="-X" tensorflow-2-vm(instance name) and the response is :
/usr/bin/xauth: file /home/user/.Xauthority does not exist,
So, I attempted to perform the below on the remote compute engine with instance name - tensorflow-2-vm and user trapti_kalra:
trapti_kalra#tensorflow-2-vm:~$ xauth list
xauth: file /home/trapti_kalra/.Xauthority does not exist
trapti_kalra#tensorflow-2-vm:~$ mv .Xauthority old.Xauthority
mv: cannot stat '.Xauthority': No such file or directory

trapti_kalra#tensorflow-2-vm:~$ xauth generate :0 . trusted

xauth: file /root/.Xauthority does not exist

so, looks like something is missing, any help will be appreciated. This was working with a EC2 server before I moved to GCP.
Create n new file: touch ~/.Xauthority
Log out and back in again with your ssh session. (I'm using MobaXterm)
Then it writes the needed.
You logged into your Linux server over ssh and got the following error;
.Xauthority does not exist
Solution :
Let's go into the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and remove the # sign at the beginning of the 3 lines below
X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10
X11UseLocalhost yes
Then systemctl restart sshd
Login again and you will not get the error.
There are many solutions to this problem, it can also depend on what machine you originate from. If you come from a Linux box, enabling sshd config options like:
X11Forwarding yes
could be enough.
When you use a Macbook however the scenario is different. In that case, you need to install xQuartz with brew:
brew install xquartz
And after this start it:
xQuartz &
After this is done the xQuartz logo appears in your bar and you can right-click the icon and start the terminal from the Applications menu. After you perform this you can run the following:
echo $DISPLAY from this terminal. This should give you the output:
:0
When you have another terminal such as iTerm, you can export this value in another terminal with export DISPLAY=:0 As long as xQuartz is still running the other terminal should be able to continue to use xQuartz.
After this you can SSH into the remote machine and check if the display variable is set:
$: ssh -Y anldisr#my-remote-machine
$: echo $DISPLAY
localhost:11.0
It took me a hour to figure this out, hope it helps someone. :)
This also happened when I added a new user to remote machine without giving the user a sudo privilege during creation.
To resolve, I used the root user or a sudo privileged user to assign a sudo privilege to the new user. Exit the new user and ssh again into your server.
> $ sudo usermod -aG sudo [newUser]

AWS Elastic Beanstalk commands return no output

I am very new to the Amazon Web Services and have been trying a learn-by-doing approach with them.
In summary I was trying to set up Git with the elastic beanstalk command line interface for my web-app. However, I wanted to use my SSH key-pair to authenticate (aws-access-id, secret) and in my naivety and ignorance, I just supplied this information (the SSH key files) and now I can't get it to work. More specifically stated below.
I have my project directory with Git set up so that it works. I then open the git bash window MINGW64 (I am on Windows 10) and attempt to set up eb.
$ eb init
It then tells me that my credentials are not set up and asks me for aws-access-id and the secret. I had just set up the SSH key-pair and try to enter these files; what's the harm in trying? EB failure, it turns out. Now, the instances seem to run fine still, looking at their status on the AWS console website. However, whatever I type into the bash:
$ eb init
$ eb status
$ eb deploy
$
There is no output. Not even an error. It just silently returns to awaiting a new command from me.
When using the --debug option with these commands, a long list of operations is returned, ending with
botocore.parsers.ResponseParserError: Unable to parse response (no element found: line 1, column 0), invalid XML received:

I thought I would be able to log out or something the like, so that I could enter proper credentials which I messed up from the beginning. I restarted the web-app from the AWS webpage interface and restarted my PC. No success.

It sounds like you have replaced your AWS credentials in ~/.aws/credentials and/or ~/.aws/config file(s) with your SSH key. You could manually replace these or execute aws configure if you have the AWS CLI installed.

Run sudo command in Qt QProcess

I am developing a software in Qt in which I created a terminal. I run different commands through QProcess in that but when I run root commands it ask for password in terminal. I tried to run via sudo but it only accepts password in terminal. Is there any way to give password from another source like pop up widget or a text file?
I have created a QProcess with "bash" as program.
Then just write to it:
echo mypassword | sudo -S ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.123\n
You could try
Running your application as root (which is really a very bad idea, actually!)
Edit sudoers file and add the commands you want to run to this file. Then you can run these commands like sudo run_x_cmd with no password i.e, your QProcess can run these commands and you won't be asked for password.
Adding a password to a text file in order to source input for the command is a very bad idea, as it weakens security.
Version 1.8 of sudo provides a plugin architecture, which would allow you to link to it from your application and may provide a solution for you.
The SDK for the sudo plugin API can be found in the documentation .

Vagrant Rsync Error before provisioning

So I'm having some adventures with the vagrant-aws plugin, and I'm now stuck on the issue of syncing folders. This is necessary to provision the machines, which is the ultimate goal. However, running vagrant provision on my machine yields
[root#vagrant-puppet-minimal vagrant]# vagrant provision
[default] Rsyncing folder: /home/vagrant/ => /vagrant
The following SSH command responded with a non-zero exit status.
Vagrant assumes that this means the command failed!
mkdir -p '/vagrant'
I'm almost positive the error is caused because ssh-ing manually and running that command yields 'permission denied' (obviously, a non-root user is trying to make a directory in the root directory). I tried ssh-ing as root but it seems like bad practice. (and amazon doesn't like it) How can I change the folder to be rsynced with vagrant-aws? I can't seem to find the setting for that. Thanks!
Most likely you are running into the known vagrant-aws issue #72: Failing with EC2 Amazon Linux Images.
Edit 3 (Feb 2014): Vagrant 1.4.0 (released Dec 2013) and later versions now support the boolean configuration parameter config.ssh.pty. Set the parameter to true to force Vagrant to use a PTY for provisioning. Vagrant creator Mitchell Hashimoto points out that you must not set config.ssh.pty on the global config, you must set it on the node config directly.
This new setting should fix the problem, and you shouldn't need the workarounds listed below anymore. (But note that I haven't tested it myself yet.) See Vagrant's CHANGELOG for details -- unfortunately the config.ssh.pty option is not yet documented under SSH Settings in the Vagrant docs.
Edit 2: Bad news. It looks as if even a boothook will not be "faster" to run (to update /etc/sudoers.d/ for !requiretty) than Vagrant is trying to rsync. During my testing today I started seeing sporadic "mkdir -p /vagrant" errors again when running vagrant up --no-provision. So we're back to the previous point where the most reliable fix seems to be a custom AMI image that already includes the applied patch to /etc/sudoers.d.
Edit: Looks like I found a more reliable way to fix the problem. Use a boothook to perform the fix. I manually confirmed that a script passed as a boothook is executed before Vagrant's rsync phase starts. So far it has been working reliably for me, and I don't need to create a custom AMI image.
Extra tip: And if you are relying on cloud-config, too, you can create a Mime Multi Part Archive to combine the boothook and the cloud-config. You can get the latest version of the write-mime-multipart helper script from GitHub.
Usage sketch:
$ cd /tmp
$ wget https://raw.github.com/lovelysystems/cloud-init/master/tools/write-mime-multipart
$ chmod +x write-mime-multipart
$ cat boothook.sh

You can then pass the contents of 'combined.txt' to aws.user_data, for instance via:
aws.user_data = File.read("/tmp/combined.txt")
Sorry for not mentioning this earlier, but I am literally troubleshooting this right now myself. :)
Original answer (see above for a better approach)
TL;DR: The most reliable fix is to "patch" a stock Amazon Linux AMI image, save it and then use the customized AMI image in your Vagrantfile. See below for details.
Background
A potential workaround is described (and linked in the bug report above) at https://github.com/mitchellh/vagrant-aws/pull/70/files. In a nutshell, add the following to your Vagrantfile:
aws.user_data = "#!/bin/bash\necho 'Defaults:ec2-user !requiretty' > /etc/sudoers.d/999-vagrant-cloud-init-requiretty && chmod 440 /etc/sudoers.d/999-vagrant-cloud-init-requiretty\nyum install -y puppet\n"
Most importantly this will configure the OS to not require a tty for user ec2-user, which seems to be the root of the problem. I /think/ that the additional installation of the puppet package is not required for the actual fix (although Vagrant may use Puppet for provisioning the machine later, depending on how you configured Vagrant).
My experience with the described workaround
I have tried this workaround but Vagrant still occasionally fails with the same error. It might be a "race condition" where Vagrant happens to run its rsync phase faster than cloud-init (which is what aws.user_data is passing information to) can prepare the workaround for #72 on the machine for Vagrant. If Vagrant is faster you will see the same error; if cloud-init is faster it works.
What will work (but requires more effort on your side)
What definitely works is to run the command on a stock Amazon Linux AMI image, and then save the modified image (= create an image snapshot) as a custom AMI image of yours.
# Start an EC2 instance with a stock Amazon Linux AMI image and ssh-connect to it
$ sudo su - root
$ echo 'Defaults:ec2-user !requiretty' > /etc/sudoers.d/999-vagrant-cloud-init-requiretty
$ chmod 440 /etc/sudoers.d/999-vagrant-cloud-init-requiretty
# Note: Installing puppet is mentioned in the #72 bug report but I /think/ you do not need it
# to fix the described Vagrant problem.
$ yum install -y puppet
You must then use this custom AMI image in your Vagrantfile instead of the stock Amazon one. The obvious drawback is that you are not using a stock Amazon AMI image anymore -- whether this is a concern for you or not depends on your requirements.
What I tried but didn't work out
For the record: I also tried to pass a cloud-config to aws.user_data that included a bootcmd to set !requiretty in the same way as the embedded shell script above. According to the cloud-init docs bootcmd is run "very early" in the startup cycle for an EC2 instance -- the idea being that bootcmd instructions would be run earlier than Vagrant would try to run its rsync phase. But unfortunately I discovered that the bootcmd feature is not implemented in the outdated cloud-init version of current Amazon's Linux AMIs (e.g. ami-05355a6c has cloud-init 0.5.15-69.amzn1 but bootcmd was only introduced in 0.6.1).
