RPC Authentication - c++

I'm working on communicating data on local machine using Remote Procedure Calls ( RPC ). My requirement is use RPC to communicate data between two processed, but server should authenticate client by some means.
I came across RpcBindingSetAuthInfo which set authentication and authorization information. The fourth parameter is authentication service which can be anything from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa373556(v=vs.85).aspx
WINNT authentication is not applicable in my case since client does not run under any particular user. Looking at the documentation, I don't understand which authentication service would be applicable in my case. I need some way to authenticate the client based on some token etc. It would be great if someone could shed some light/ give some pointers of RPC authentication.

Yes token generation is what we use in our product as well . For e.g when the client requests to connect to the server , after authentication the server generates a unique id which it sends to the client . Now the client creates an instance of the server interface and which returns a pointer on which all the further communication can take place . When the client disconnects , the server unregisters or removes the unique id from its list of client's connected

Can I rely on ConnectionId for security with API Gateway Websockets?

I'm working on a project where the backend is built with the serverless framework. Recently, I added a feature using API Gateway's websockets. However, I have my doubts about my particular implementation's security, and wanted to ask how valid they were.
I struggled to build authentication into my websocket routes. There was an authorizer feature, but unfortunately native Javascript APIs provide no way to edit headers in a Websocket message - this means I would have to submit authorization tokens in the url params, which I would prefer not to do.
I came up with a workaround. I have existing HTTP microservices set up on API Gateway with serverless, authenticated through AWS Cognito Identity Federation. My solution was to "piggyback" my websocket authentication onto my HTTP services, as follows.
My client opens a websocket connection, and receives back the connectionId assigned to it by API Gateway.
My client calls an HTTP route with the connectionId, which is authenticated with Cognito. This serves to let my backend know that this particular connectionId is authenticated. I push the connectionId and the Cognito identity to a database, along with other information. This way, later I can find what connectionIds are associated with a particular Cognito identity.
When a client wants to call a "secured" websocket method, the websocket method checks the lookup table to see if that connectionId is associated with the correct Cognito identity. If it is, then the method goes through. Otherwise, the connection is closed.

"So, one pattern we’ve seen that seems to solve the WebSocket authentication problem well is a “ticket”-based authentication system. Broadly speaking, it works like this:
When the client-side code decides to open a WebSocket, it contacts the HTTP server to obtain an authorization “ticket”.
The server generates this ticket. It typically contains some sort of user/account ID, the IP of the client requesting the ticket, a timestamp, and any other sort of internal record
keeping you might need.
The server stores this ticket (i.e. in a database or cache), and also returns it to the client.
The client opens the WebSocket connection, and sends along this “ticket” as part of an initial handshake.
The server can then compare this ticket, check source IPs, verify that the ticket hasn’t been re-used and hasn’t expired, and do any other sort of permission checking. If all goes well, the WebSocket connection is now verified."
As far as I can tell, my method are heroku's are similar in that they both use an HTTP method to authenticate, but differ because
1) Heroku's method checks for authentication upon opening, while mine checks afterwards
2) Heroku's method requires generating and storing secure tokens
I don't want to send authorization over the websocket, because I'd have to store it in url params, and I also do not want to generate and store tokens, so I went with my method.
However, I have a couple of doubts about my method as well.
1) Because I don't check authorization on websocket open, in theory this approach is vulnerable to a dDos attack, where an attacker simply opens as many sockets as they can. My assumption here is that the responsibility falls on API Gateway to prevent, with its Leaky Bucket algorithm.
2) My strategy hinges on the connectionId being secure. If an attacker were able to spoof this connectionId, then my strategy would no longer work. I assume this connectionId is issued internally within API Gateway to mark specific connections, and should not be vulnerable as a result. However, I wanted to double check if this was the case.
I would suggest looking into JWT's. It was kind of created for this purpose where you need to have some way to authenticate client-side requests without exposing credentials. It is fully self contained and allows you to not make a request to a database everytime you make a request to validate the user making the request: https://jwt.io/
JWT's are very easy to implement in Serverless and attach to a web socket connection request. You can then do something like add the user IP address to the payload of the JWT and validate that at request time to ensure that the user is 100% validated.

How can I access ejabberd REST API from server side

I am new to eJabberd, after setting up the server and be able to send messages between users I want to be able to create rooms from our backend server (not from our clients).
I read this article:

But I did not understand how can I use the api from our server side (for example, to automatically create rooms for our users), how can I obtain a token for the server to use the API?

You should consider using mod_rest - http interface to post data to ejabberd. You can read more about configuration & examples here.
Do consider adding some restrictions so that only your server can use the http interface.

Is it possible to restrict web service access to it's own web app?

Is it possible to block connections to a web service (server) from outside its domain?
For example consider a web app that fetches data from Twitter's API using Twitter's "application only auth". The web app's client uses AJAX to call it's own server, which in turn calls Twitter's API with Twitter's token.
While the token is never exposed to the client side code is there anything to stop an outside server side app from calling the web app's server using the URLs used by the client and for example exhausting the Twitter tokens rate limits?

Certainly. Set your web server's access control lists to drop connections from outside of your IP range. Alternately, install a firewall. That's very straightforward, but I suspect you mean something else by "outside its domain?"
From your description, you seem to be really asking whether you verify that you're only talking to your own client application. As a general rule, no. You can authenticate users. That's easy. If the user isn't logged in and authorized to use your service, you don't forward requests to Twitter. But you can't authenticate applications.
If you're going to accept any user who shows up, you can't stop them from using whatever client they want. There is no way to ensure that it is your unmodified client if you've allowed it to be run on their machine. They can always modify it, and they can always send you arbitrary traffic from other programs and you can't tell the difference. On the network, bytes are bytes.

You should secure your web service with user and password security or certificate security. The basic idea is that the web service client must authenticate in order to call your web service.
Here are some technics (there are others or variations):
1) HTTP basic authentication and HTTPS
2) Mutual SSL authentication - Also called two-way authentication, is a process in which both entities authenticate with each other. The server presents a certificate to the client and the client present a certificate to the server.
3) With SOAP web services you can use WS-Security standard.
4) OAuth framework
5) With Rest services you can use options 1), 2), 4). Or implement one by your own. This are good recomendations.
As you can see, there are a lot of ways to secure a web service.

Protect my Django REST API (basic Authentication or anything else)

I'm trying to protect my Django restful api.
I got two clients :
my Django Front end application (Ajax requests on my server)
a python application using httplib to make its own requests
For now I'm using HTTP Basic Authentication to allow a client to consume a resource.
A basic username/password on a auth method managing a cookie session.
In production I ensure that my API is only available over https.
I tried to implement HMAC construction (because I don't want to put my password on the wire, but I have to store the secret at both ends). This work well with my other python application, but not with my Django Front end application since any user can see the javascript code.
I tried to implement an other authentication method because I don't want to really maintain a session state (not really REST).

What are the weaknesses of the basic Authentication System ?

Being prone to repeat attack is in my opinion the largest weakness of basic authentication.
Have you considered public/private key infrastructure? Client apps create public/private key pairs. Public keys are stored on the server. Client app encrypts its request with private key, server can decrypt it with client app's public key and send the response the same way.

Sessions in REST services

I'm developing small REST service which should support client session persistence. As you know because of REST we can't store any client data on the server, data must be stored on client side and client's request must be self-sufficient. So...how we can store client sessions? Searching over the internet I've found some methods how to realize this. For example: we send to the client encrypted token which contains client's id(nick...etc), like token = AES(id, secretKey); and then we're authorize user every request decrypting token on the server with secret key. Can anyone advise anything? Maybe there is another good ways to do same functionality. Which crypto algorithm will be preferable for this? Thanks.

REST doesn't say you can't store client data on the server; it just says you shouldn't store application state there, which you can think of as "what this client is in the middle of trying to do".
If you are primarily trying to just have a concept of authenticated users, then a standard login cookie will work just fine and is not "unRESTful".
It all comes down to your answer to this question: why do you need a "session" concept in the first place?
If you need to ensure that the client passes a cookie representing a set of credentials, consider instead having the client pass them as HTTPS authentication headers with each request instead.
If you need some sticky routing rules to be followed (to make sure that the client's request gets sent to a particular server), consider using this opportunity to get rid of that architectural straightjacket as it is the quickest way to kill your chances of future scalability. Instead, make your server choice arbitrary.
If you absolutely must route to a specific node, try requiring that the client pass enough identification data that you can use it to hash or shard the client down a particular "swim lane". You could split things up based on their username, for example.
