Can't ping AWS RDS instance after allowing ICMP - amazon-web-services

I'm trying to ping my newly set up AWS RDS instance, but I am unable to do so (four "Request timed out" errors).
I added a rule in my EC2 security group for the instance, allowing all ICMP but it still does not work.
I am new to this, so apologies if I'm missing something obvious. Thanks!

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) is a web service that makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud.
With that said, it is not a host that you can ping. In fact many instances of the database product could reside on one virtual machine; the infrastructure behind this is hidden from user.
EC2 security group should work, for EC2 server; are you pinging the EC2 instance correctly? The security rule should be setup as the picture here

Cannot access Amazon RDS instance

I have created a free-tier PostgreSQL RDS instance and everything appears to looks good on the portal. However, I am unable to get to the instance.
Going through the troubleshooting steps, they mention it could a firewall issue on my end. However, a quick ping from an external site reveals the same timeout issue.
Is there a step that I've missed?
Ping is typically disabled in AWS Security Groups. It is not recommended as a method of checking network connections.
The best method would be to use an SQL client to connect to the database via JDBC or ODBC.
Things to check:
Your RDS instance was launched as Publicly Accessible
Your RDS instance was launched in a Public Subnet (Definition: The subnet's Route Table points to an Internet Gateway)
The Security Group permits connections on the database port (this is also where you could permit PING access, but no guarantee that it would work with an RDS instance)
Check the associated Security Groups that you have tagged. Security groups hold the firewall rules. Either you may have to tweak the group that you have selected or try changing / modifying the group that you (or your profile) have access to.

How to connect to a RDS instance in a different AWS region

I have an EC2 instance in one region, N.California. I have an RDS instance in EU/Ireland. I am not able to connect to the RDS instance from the EC2 instance, the connection times out. This tutorial by aws says that I would need to use the Public IP of the RDS instance in order to connect to it. But this public IP is not available on the AWS console, I'm not even sure if we're supposed to be using any other than RDS endpoints. We're also disallowed from adding a security group from one region to the security group of another.
I am really unsure about how to proceed.
I am answering my own question because my own solution worked, and it might be of use to someone else considering that the AWS tutorial is wrong.
To connect, add a custom tcp rule over port 3306 in the security group Ingress Rules for the RDS instance, with the EIP of your EC2 instance as the allowed host. Voila.

Writing to an RDS MySQL database from an EC2 instance

I have a t2.micro instance running, that is producing some data that needs to be written to a database. So, I created a RDS database with MySQL on it.
The issue I'm facing is, nonsurprisingly, getting the EC2 instance to communicate with the RDS database in any way/shape/form.
I'm been battling with it all day. I'm left with these bits of confusion:
I figured I've just add the public IP of the EC2 instance to the security group of the RDS. Turns out the RDS doesn't really have a security group, only a VPN. So how do I allow communication from the EC2 instance, then?
Speaking of security groups, do I need to se the EC2 up to require outbound connections?
The RDS has an 'endpoint' and not a public IP as far as I can tell. So I can't add it to any security group at all. Is this correct?
Am I going to have to figure out how to use Elastic Beanstalk or some other way to get these components to play together?
These are all the things I'm trying to troubleshoot but I'm not getting anywhere. There doesn't seem to be any good blogs / etc; mostly what I'm finding is stuff on how to get the RDS to be accessed by your local hardware, not an EC2 instance.
How should I set this up?
There are two ways to allow inbound connection to RDS database: CIDR/IP or EC2 security group.
You can go to VPC, at the left panel there is "Security Groups" (yes, RDS do have security group). Click that, and choose your DB security group (if you already have the RDS instance created) or create a new one.
Under connection type, choose either CIDR/IP or EC2 security group.
If you choose to go with CIDR/IP, you should know what IP address your EC2 instance is and put the address or range in e.g. "10.11.12.0/24".
If you choose to go with EC2 security group, you should know the security group nameof your EC2 instance and select it from the dropdown provided e.g. "my security group".
Please note that the EC2 instance and the RDS instance need to be able to "see" each other i.e. in the same region, VPC, subnets with proper NACL (network access control list) etc.
Speaking of outbound connection and security group, no, security groups only manage inbound connection.

How to connect to AWS elasticache?

Could someone give a step-by-step procedure for connecting to elasticache.
I'm trying to connect to a redis elasticache node from inside my EC2 instance (sshed in). I'm getting Connection Timed Out errors each time, and I can't figure out what's wrong with how I've configured my AWS settings.
They are in different VPCs, but in my elasticache VPC, I have a custom TCP inbound rule at port 6379 to accept from anywhere. And the two VPCs share an Active Peer connection that I set up. What more am I intended to do?

I am trying to connect via the redis-cli command. I sshed in because I was originally trying to connect via the node-redis module since my EC2 instance hosts a node server. So officially my two attempts are 1. A scripted module and 2. The redis-cli command provided in the AWS documentation.

You cannot connect to Elasticache from outside its VPC. It's a weird design decision on AWS' part, and although it's not documented well, it is documented here:
Amazon ElastiCache Nodes, deployed within a VPC, can never be accessed from the Internet or from EC2 Instances outside the VPC.
You can set your security groups to allow connections from everywhere, and it will look like it worked, but it won't matter or let you actually connect from outside the VPC (also a weird design decision).
In your Redis cluster properties you have a reference to the Security Group. Copy it.
In our EC2 instance you also have a Security Group. You should edit this Security Group and add the ID of the Redis Security Group as CIDR in the outbound connections + the port 6379.
This way the two Security Groups are linked and the connection can be established.

Amazon Web Service RDS-EC2 interaction

I am pretty new to AWS.
I have an EC2 instance running a Java web app on Tomcat, and I need to connect it to an Oracle RDS instance. The intances are in the same region.
what are the performance associated with the communication between two instances? Are they the same that I would see if both istances would run in my home LAN?
what about security of RDS instance? If I open port 1521 in the security group (for allowing access to EC2 instance), then the db instance will be exposed to public network?
Do you think that for such situation would be better a VPC?

I have not made any specific measurements, but the connection speed between RDS and EC2 should be very good. Just make sure that the machines are set up in the same availability zone.
Regarding security, you can also specify that access to your RDS machine should be open for specific EC2 groups, so normally the port won't be open publically.
P1) Make sure EC2 and RDS are in same AZ
P2) Make sure you use bigger instance types for NW bandwidth between them
