I'm trying to create a rewrite rule to redirect to a URL based on a conidtion.
I have had a look on-line for similar questions but am finding myself confused.
My rewrite rule looks like follows:
RewriteRule ^rates/(\w+)/?$ http://www.url.co.uk/rates/result.php?quotenum=$1 [R,L]
For example, this will redirect any combination of characters after the URL
www.url.co.uk/rates/1234
to
www.url.co.uk/rates/result.php?quotenum=1234
I am creating an admin page as well which will sit at the URL:
www.url.co.uk/rates/admin
How do I modify my rewrite rule to prevent the redirection of the URL to
www.url.co.uk/rates/result.php?quotenum=admin
When the URL is equal to
www.url.co.uk/rates/admin
This should work:
RewriteRule ^rates/((?!admin/?$)\w+)/?$ http://www.url.co.uk/rates/result.php?quotenum=$1 [R,L,NC]
(?!admin/?$) is a negative lookahead that will not match given regex if URI is /rates/admin OR /rates/admin

I need to convert with HTACCESS method tons of URL's allready produced (and already indexed...) by Wordpress for articles containing folders/subfolders to simples URL's without any folder/subfolder name.
Example:
FROM https://www.website.com/Animals/Cats/mycat.html TO https://www.website.com/mycat.html
FROM https://www.website.com/Animals/Dogs/mydog.html TO https://www.website.com/mydog.html
FROM https://www.website.com/Countries/France/bordeaux.html TO https://www.website.com/bordeaux.html
etc...
I already changed permalinks options in Wordpress config. So, now URL's produced are in the good format (Ex: https://www.website.com/bordeaux.html) without any folder name.
My problem is to redirect all OLD Url's to this new format to prevent 404 and preserve the rank.
If tryed to add in my .htacess this line :
RewriteRule ^/(.*)\.html$ /$1 [R=301,L,NC]
I egally tryed RedirectMatch 301 (.*)\.html$ method and it's the same. I'm going crazy with this.
What am i doing wrong and could you help me?
Thanks
RewriteRule ^/(.*)\.html$ /$1 [R=301,L,NC]
The URL-path matched by the RewriteRule pattern never starts with a slash. But you can use this to only match the last path-segment when there are more "folders". And the target URL also needs to end in .html (as per your examples).
So, this can be written in a single directive:
RewriteRule /([^/]+\.html)$ /$1 [R=301,L]
This handles any level of nested "folders". But does not match /foo.html (the target URL) in the document root (due to the slash prefix on the regex), so no redirect-loop.
(No need for any preceding conditions.)
Here the $1 backrefence includes the .html suffix.
Just match the last part of the url and pass it to the redirect:
RewriteRule /([^/]+)\.html$ /$1.html [R=301,L,NC]
It will match any number of directories like:
https://www.website.com/dir1/page1.html
https://www.website.com/dir1/dir2/page2.html
https://www.website.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/page3.html
https://www.website.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/dir3/page4.html
I am trying to turn an ugly url with parameters into a nice url. At the moment I have:
http://myasite.com/index.php?reg=uk&area=london&id=16
Which I would like to have like so:
http://myasite.com/uk/london/16
I have tried using this .htaccess:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^/?$/?$ index.php?reg=$1&area=london&id=$2 [L,QSA]
Which I got from an online generator however when I run the page with /uk/16 in the url it just crashes.
What am I doing wrong?
In reply to Chris's reply below. All of these are optional.
Structure of url is like so:
myasite.com
myasite.com/uk (if set, This will always be text and always 2 chars long)
myasite.com/uk/london (if set, This will always be text, this will be any char length )
myasite.com/uk/london/16 (if set, This will always be integer and any char length)
Your regex is incorrect. Your ^/?$/?$ says the request can have 2 /s only, each is optional. You also aren't using any capture groups so $1 and $2 have no context. Here's a regex that would work for your provided example:
^/(uk)/(\d+)$
If uk can be any 2 lowercase letters you could use:
^/([a-z]{2})/(\d+)$
You can use regex101 to see how your regexs will function.
https://regex101.com/r/VyJE9d/1 (your rule)
https://regex101.com/r/VyJE9d/2
The right side of the page gives explanations.
As a rewrite rule:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^/([a-z]{2})/(\d+)$ index.php?reg=$1&id=$2 [L,QSA]
All you need to use is this in your .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([^/]*)/([^/]*)/([^/]*)$ /index.php?reg=$1&area=$2&id=$3 [L]
This will leave you with your desired URL of: http://myasite.com/uk/london/16. Just make sure you clear your cache before testing this.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9_-]+)/([0-9]+)/?$ index.php?reg=$1&id=$2 [L,QSA]
We are rewriting $1/$2/ and $1/$2 to index.php?reg=$1&id=$2
Going to show my lack of regex knowledge here but seem to be having trouble with the following:
I need to redirect the following example structure of a url:
www.example.com/blog-title-here/tags/this+is+a+long+tag+name
www.example.com/tag/this-is-a-long-tag-name
I need to redirect to just /tag and replace any instance of + with a -
You can use this recursive redirect rule as your very first rule in site root .htaccess:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule "(?:.*/)?(tag/[^ +]*)[ +]+([^ +]*[ +].*)$" $1-$2 [N,NC,DPI]
RewriteRule "(?:.*/)?(tag/[^ +]*)[ +]+([^ +]*)$" /$1-$2 [L,R=301,NC,NE]
This will redirect http://localhost/blog-title-here/tag/this+is+a+long+tag+name to http://localhost/tag/this-is-a-long-tag-name
I am using Apache 2.4.7. I use mod_rewrite to alter some urls.
I want to rewrite http://example.com/servicename/oldpage?id=abcto http://example.com/servicename/newpage.
Other similar rewrites work so I belive the ? inside url is causing problems.
I have tried escaping it with \.
This works as there is no ? in url:
RewriteRule ^/servicename/old /servicename/new
But these don't work:
RewriteRule ^/servicename/oldpage?id=abc /servicename/newpage
RewriteRule ^/servicename/oldpage\?id=abc /servicename/newpage
I have also tried using RewriteCond from examples like this: .htaccess rewrite URL with a question mark "?" but I didn't manage to get them work.
How should rewrite url that contains question mark?
EDIT: I tried solutions given in Match Question Mark in mod_rewrite rule regex but was not able to make them work for me. That question is about preserving query string when rewrite while I want to remove it when rewriting.
RewriteRule pattern is matched against the part of the URL after the hostname and port, and before the query string.
When the requested URI contains a query string, and the target URI does not, the default behavior of RewriteRule is to copy that query string to the target URI. Using the [QSD] flag causes the query string to be discarded.
So, this should work:
RewriteRule ^/servicename/oldpage /servicename/newpage [QSD]
I'm trying to write a rule that maintains legacy urls with a rule that matches a pattern but I would like to add something that redirects url posts as well. I'm not good a this htaccess stuff. Here is a scenario:
Legacy URL:
www.blah.com/register/player
Legacy RewriteRule:
RewriteRule ^register/(.*)/?$ /account/register.php?type=$1 [NC,L]
New URL:
www.blah.com/register/player?email=bob#g.com
New RewriteRule???
RewriteRule ^register/(.*)/?$ /account/register.php?type=$1 [NC,P]
I found this post Is it possible to redirect post data? that helped me find the P flag which works without the pattern match but it doesn't work when I try to do both.
I don't want to just add another pattern match because my url post data can be arbitrary with more then one param (the case described above is simplified). It seems like this should be doable. Is it? Thanks.
Seems like you need the query string attached on redirect, hence the QSA flag
Try:
RewriteRule ^register/(.*)/?$ /account/register.php?type=$1 [QSA,NC,P]
