Implement Routing With EmberFire? - ember.js

However I find myself still unclear on the prospect of getting some of the functionality as Model. Right now I'm trying to utilize the new emberFire library, which provides some base Object types for interacting with the Firebase service.
I'm able to create new objects and arrays of objects, however I'm unable to get Routes setup properly.
Am I able to extend my base App.Model as one of the EmberFire objects in order to utilize the more standard approaches to retrieving and manipulating data?
Edit
When I've tried using the suggestion in Answer 2, I've gotten this error:
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'id' of undefined
So I tried adding in:
App.Post = EmberFire.Object.extend({
id: null,
body: null
});
To perhaps define the Object, however I feel I'm going about that the wrong way as well?
Edit 2
Here's my current stuff:
App = Ember.Application.create();
App.Router.map(function() {
this.resource('post', { path: '/:post_id' }, function() {
this.route('edit');
});
});
App.Post = EmberFire.Object.extend({
id: null,
title: null
});
As I mentioned above, I've tried defining my object as both an EmberFire.Object and EmberFire.Array, and attempted plugging App.Post.create in my Route.
App.IndexRoute = Ember.Route.extend({
model: function() {
return EmberFire.Array.create({
ref: new Firebase("https://embertest2.firebaseio.com/posts/")
});
}
});
App.PostRoute = Ember.Router.extend({
model: function(params) {
return EmberFire.Object.create({
ref: new Firebase("https://embertest2.firebaseio.com/posts/" + params.post_id)
});
}
});
I'm also wondering if perhaps I shouldn't be using the EmberFire.Array in my IndexRoute to generate essentially the list of links for each post.
App.IndexController = Ember.ArrayController.extend({
title: "",
actions: {
addPost: function() {
this.pushObject(this.get('title'));
}
}
});
My aim currently is to create each Post record, have it populate on the list, have links to each Post, and the ability to edit each Post record on the Post page.
Here's the current error I've been getting:

I figure I'm doing something silly here, and will continue to muck about until I stumble over what I did incorrectly.

The README on the emberFire page that you linked details how to create your custom objects in your Route. If you're talking about the Router (which is different than a Route), I don't think it should be any different than normal (with Ember Data). If you're having trouble with it you should post the code that you've tried to use and any errors that you're getting. If you can post a JSBin illustrating the problem it would be even better.

You can attach EmberFire.Object to a specific URL that is associated with the post. You'll need the post_id to do that:
App.PostRoute = Ember.Router.extend({
model: function(params) {
return EmberFire.Object.create({
ref: new Firebase("https://embertest2.firebaseio.com/posts/" + params.post_id)
});
}
});

Ember access array controller's content from another controller

I have two controllers: postsController and postController. the post route is NOT nested under posts ( I do not want to do so because I want the posts view to be replaced by the post view, not added to it.)
This is what my router looks like.
this.resource('posts', {path: '/'}, function(){
// this.route('index', {path: '/'});
});
this.resource('post', { path: 'posts/:id' }, function(){
this.route('show');
}
Now, the postsController:
App.PostsRoute = Ember.Route.extend({
model: function(){
return this.store.find('post');
},
})
App.PostsController = Ember.ArrayController.extend({
testProperty: "This is a test"
})
And the PostController:
App.PostRoute = Ember.Route.extend({
model: function(params){
return this.store.find('post', params.id);
},
})
App.PostController = Ember.ObjectController.extend({
needs: ['posts'],
percentValue: 100,
progressBarWidth: null,
advancePost: function(delta) {
var that = this;
var posts = that.get('controllers.posts');
// debugger <-- This is where all my questions are concerned with.
...
},
actions: {
nextPost: function() {
this.advancePost(1);
},
previousPost: function() {
this.advancePost(-1);
},
}
})
So. PostController 'needs' PostsController, and on action advancePost, needs to access PostsController's model (which is supposed to contain an array of Post Objects.) At the point where my debugger is, the variable posts accessed postsController. At this point, if I run
posts.get('testProperty') // => gives "This is a test", which is correct.
on the chrome console, I get "This is a test". So I know that I have gained access to the Posts Controller itself. However, any of the following attempts:
posts.get('model') // gives []??
posts.get('content') // gives []??
returns an empty array ( [] ).
I fail to understand why. If I have access to the Posts arrayController, why do I not have access to its data? Consequently, how would I gain access to its data?
I would greatly appreciate clarity on this.
First, if I understand your context, I think you should rather nest post under posts by doing this :
this.resource('posts', {path: '/'}, function(){
this.route('post', {path: '/:id'});
});
And then, since posts is your "parent" route, you no longer need to declare the needs dependency in your controller.
To access get your posts, apply the following in your Route :
setupController: function(controller, model) {
this._super(controller, model);
controller.set('posts', this.modelFor("posts").get("content"));
}
You should think about the interaction patterns you want to support. Is it typical for a user to go back to the list of items they were just looking at? Reloading posts whilst keeping the scroll position in the list they were at will be problematic. Also re-fetching from the server and tearing down and setting up the DOM has a lot more overhead than just leaving it there.
Are you intending to use animation on your transitions? Using something like liquid-fire will need both outlets rendered to perform an animation so it makes no sense to tear down the list in that case.
CSS can be used to have the nested outlet fill whatever container it is put in allowing the approach provided by Pascal Boutin to be used.

Query-params-new nested routes strange error

In an application I use the latest canary versions for Ember and Ember Data. I have the following router:
this.resource('articles', {path: '/articles'}, function() {
this.resource('article', {path: '/:article_id'});
});
In the ArticlesController I specify some queryParams:
queryParams: ['category', 'search'],
category: '1', // defaults to 1
searchTerm: "",
In my ArticlesRoute I specify a model refresh and the model:
queryParams: {
category: {
refreshModel: true
}
},
model: function(params) {
// here I do use the params to return articles based on category and/or searchTerm
}
So far so good, all code above works perfect. However when I do a this.transitionTo('article', articleObject) or this.transitionToRoute('article', articleObject) in my application I get the following error:
Error: You didn't provide enough string/numeric parameters to satisfy all of the dynamic segments for route article

Uncaught Error: Assertion Failed: Error: You didn't provide enough string/numeric parameters to satisfy all of the dynamic segments for route article index.js:3658
This strange error only happens when I first clicked a Category so the queryParam category is changed, and then fire a transitionTo to an article.
I have tried to use the debugger; statement to get the source of the error. However it seems that is an event that calls this error. When searching the sourcecode I found that the error originates from line 44242 of ember.js.
Does anyone know why this error happen after I have transitioned to a non query-params-new route?
Edit: now in Github too: https://github.com/emberjs/ember.js/issues/5070 (comment on Github)
JSBin: http://emberjs.jsbin.com/yiquyupa
I ran into almost the same issue in an afterModel callback where the parent route/controller has queryParams.
I found that if you just pass the queryParams from the transition argument (not the queryParams argument which is null/undefined) into Route.transitionTo / Route.replaceWith then the transition completes.
Example:
afterModel: function(model, transition, queryParams) {
// FIXME: unresolved Ember issue https://github.com/emberjs/ember.js/issues/5070
this.replaceWith('another.route', model, { queryParams: transition.queryParams});
}
I don't know why this happens, but queryParams is still a relatively new feature and still has some rough edges.

How to Add Child Record to Existing Parent Record?

I've been googling and scouring Stack Overflow for some sort of hint on this subject but the information is scattered at best.
I'm trying to Create a new Child Record (Comment) and save it to an existing Parent Record (Post). I am using Ember-Model, rather than Ember-Data, but any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
At the moment, I've been successful creating a new, embedded Comment but only when it is created with a new Post record. So:
How do I go about loading/retrieving the currently loaded Post(parent record) in order to apply Comments (child records) to it?
I've been reading up on controller dependencies, using needs: and this.controllerFor and this.modelFor in order to have access to another controller/model's content but have been unable to wire these things together into something meaningful.
Anyway, here is what I've whittled my application code down to, in the hopes I might be able to stumble into the proper way of doing this...
Routes
App.Router.map(function() {
this.resource('post', { path: '/:post_id' }, function() {
this.resource('comments', { path: '/comments'} );
});
});
I removed all the other resources & routes, so I'm left with App.Post, App.PostIndex, and App.Comments. I think my routes are the issue here, I assume I'm not properly implementing the methods to use the loaded Post record in my Comments route.
App.IndexRoute = Ember.Route.extend({
model: function() {
return App.Post.find();
},
setupController: function(controller, model) { // I'm not certain if this
controller.set('content', model); // setupController is needed?
}
});
App.PostRoute = Ember.Route.extend({
model: function(params) {
return App.Post.find(params.post_id);
},
setupcontroller: function( controller, model) { // again, unsure if this
this.controllerFor('post').get('comments'); // is correct.
controller.set('content', comments);
}
});
App.CommentsRoute = Ember.Route.extend({
afterModel: function() {
this.set('post', this.modelFor('post'));
},
setupcontroller: function( controller, model) {
this.controllerFor('post').get('comments');
controller.set('content', comments);
}
});
Controller
App.CommentsController = Ember.ArrayController.extend({
needs: "post",
actions: {
addComment: function() {
var post = App.Post.create({
title: 'static post title'
});
post.get('comments').create({
message: 'static message'
});
post.save();
}
}
});
This is my current Comments Controller, which can create a new Post with an embedded Comment. I've found and been given numerous examples in which to create the Comment, but none seem to work for me. Basically, I'm struggling with defining the var post = ... as the currently loaded record. I've implemented various approaches in an attempt at trial & error. Thus far I have attempted:
var post = App.Post.create();, returns property undefined, as this would create a new record. However, I gave it a shot as every example i saw related to this defined their record as such.
var post = this.get('post');, returns a cannot call 'get' on undefined. I've tried using this method of defining my current post on both the Comments controller and Post controller.
var post = this.get('controllers.post.content);, returns a 'cyclic error' from the backend I'm using.
var post = App.Post.find();, returns a cannot call 'get' on undefined.
var post = App.Post.find(1);, Again, returns a cannot call 'get' on undefined. Figured I'd give it a shot because this is one of those recurring examples people provide. The backend I use applies its own ID to each record, and I'm unsure if I would be able to/how to have the .find() method use a dynamic ID value and retrieve only the model I just loaded.
I'm guessing that I'm not properly setting up my Routes and Controller dependencies?
If anyone has a suggestion, relevant link, or fix I would be very grateful.
This one (seemingly simple) issue/use case has me at wit's end at this point.
Try this (works pre beta 2):
App.CommentsController = Ember.ArrayController.extend({
actions: {
addComment: function() {
this.content.createRecord({
message: 'static message'
});
}
}
});
Ember Data Beta 2 and later:
App.CommentsController = Ember.ArrayController.extend({
needs: ["post"],
actions: {
addComment: function() {
var post = this.get('controllers.post');
var comment = this.get('store').createRecord('comment', {
message: 'static message',
post: post
});
comment.save().then(function() {
post.addObject(comment);
// You may or may not need to save your post, too. In my case my backend handles
// the inverses of relationships (if existing), so there's no need. We still need
// to do this for Ember, though
});
}
}
});

How to get model properties

I have model:
App.Item = DS.Model.extend({
itemId: DS.attr('string'),
itemName: DS.attr('string'),
itemType: DS.attr('string'),
});
I successfully create some items from JSON. I can put them to page by {{#each items}}{{ itemName}}{{/each}}. But I don't know, how to get itemName in javascript.
I tried this:
var item = App.Item.find(1);
console.log(item.itemName);
--> undefined
I can't find anything useful from emberjs and ember-data docs. Can anyone help me?
Thanks
I tried this:
var item = App.Item.find(1);
console.log(item.itemName);
--> undefined
This is normal because the call to .find(1); is asyncronous and returns a promise and not the item you are expecting.
Therefore you should try:
App.Item.find(1).then(function(result) {
console.log(record.get('itemName'));
});
It also depends from where you are doing App.Item.find() if it's from inside a route you should wait until the afterModel hook is called to access your items:
App.FooRoute = Ember.Route.extend({
model: function() {
return App.Item.find(1);
},
afterModel: function(record) {
console.log(record.get('itemName'));
}
});
Also be aware that if you where calling find() without parameter then you will receive a RecordArray which you need to loop over to get access to your items. Also worth mentioning is that in ember you should always use .get() and .set() instead of the vanilla dot-notation otherwise you hijack the binding mecanism resulting in no updates in your view etc.
Note, if you are using the latest ember.js release (1.0.0) then the call to .find() should be made somewhat different. But that's not clear from your question.
Hope it helps.

ember.js cannot set property 'store' of undefined

I have been trying to set up an Ember.js application together with a RESTful API i have created in Laravel.
I have encountered a problem trying to get the data trough the store, and depending on my implementation, I get different errors, but never any working implementations.
The ember.js guide have one example, other places have other examples, and most information I find is outdated.
Here's my current code:
App = Ember.Application.create();
App.Router.map(function() {
this.resource("world", function() {
this.resource("planets");
});
});
App.PlanetsRoute = Ember.Route.extend({
model: function() {
return this.store.find('planet');
}
});
App.Planet = DS.Model.extend({
id: DS.attr('number'),
name: DS.attr('string'),
subjectId: DS.attr('number')
});
And when I try to click the link for planets, thats when the error occurs, and I get the following error right now:
Error while loading route: TypeError {} ember-1.0.0.js:394
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot set property 'store' of undefined emberdata.js:15
No request is sent for /planets at all. I had it working with a $.getJSON, but I wanted to try to implement the default ember-data RESTAdapter.
For reference, these are some of the implementations i've tried:
var store = this.get('store'); // or just this.get('store').find('planet')
return store.find('planet', 1) // (or findAl()) of store.findAll('planet');
App.store = DS.Store.create();
I also tried DS.Store.all('planet') as I found it in the ember.js api, but seemed like I ended up even further away from a solution.
Most other implementations give me an error telling me there is no such method find or findAll.
EDIT (Solution)
After alot of back and forward, I managed to make it work.
I'm not sure exactly which step fixed it, but I included the newest versions available from the web (Instead of locally), and the sourcecode now looks like this:
window.App = Ember.Application.create();
App.Router.map(function() {
this.resource("world", function() {
this.resource("planets");
});
});
App.PlanetsRoute = Ember.Route.extend({
model: function() {
return this.store.findAll('planet');
}
});
App.Planet = DS.Model.extend({
name: DS.attr(),
subjectId: DS.attr()
});
The error you had is probably due to the fact that you added a "s" plural of your objects.
i.e. if you use
App.Planets = DS.Model.extend({
})
you would get that error.
