I have been developing an MVC application locally (IIS Express) and deploing to IIS 7.5 periodically in order to test.
I have just added a new named Route to my Global.asax.cs file:
routes.MapRoute(
"MyCustomRoute", // Route name
"{documentID}/{year}", // URL with parameters
new { controller = "Documents", action = "CurrentVersion", year = DateTime.Now.Year }, // Parameter defaults
new { documentID = #".*\d+.*" } // Regex matches only where documentID contains numerical values.
);
routes.MapRoute(
"Default", // Route name
"{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters
new { controller = "Documents", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } // Parameter defaults
);
I have set up a Html.RouteLink using "MyCustomRoute" and all works well on my local machine.
However, when I run this on the Web Server, Html.RouteLink is generating an empty link. In addition, if i enter the URL directly into the browser, it gives a 404.
It seems as if the Route has not registered. What am I missing?
It's impossible for us to debug your route without seeing the code, and if you use the right tools, it will be very easy for you to see what's going on and what is being matched.
Phil Haack built an excellent open source tool called RouteDebugger. You can get it through NuGet and read about how to use it at http://haacked.com/archive/2011/04/12/routedebugger-2.aspx . A more robust version of this project is available as RouteMagic and is at Codeplex and git. Details at this blog post
UPDATE
Based on your regex, you're documentID is not being matched due to greediness. .* will match everything, so you it will never have the opportunity to match \d+, because the preceding pattern will cannibalize all matches. You can read about regex greediness and laziness at http://www.regular-expressions.info/repeat.html .
UPDATE 2
Regexes are probably the thing I'm worst at programming, and the only reason I recognized that issue is because I am so bad at them that I've run into the same issue about a million times. That being said, I think #"(.*?)(\d+?)(.*?)" will do the trick. It should work without any of the parentheses as well (like #".*?\d+?.*?"), but I like to keep them in there for readability (mostly because I'm so bad at them).

I am currently trying to develop a custom client template for the Google Tag Manager Server Side and would like to react to a certain URL pattern. Unfortunately, I'm either being silly with the regex or there is somehow a problem with the sandbox JS. I have simplified the example. There is a problem with the backslash at the beginning. Here is the code and the error message. Does anyone have an idea?
const claimRequest = require('claimRequest');
let text = "/abc";
let pattern = /\/ab[c]/;
let result = pattern.test(text);
claimRequest();
And the error message:
1 Error(s) parsing the input:
token recognition error at: '\'
Offending token '' at 4,15.
It appears that as this is a sandboxed limited capabilities javascript environment where RegExp constructor have not been included, hence i am also unable to perform this basic and very common task of splitting templates per country let's say. Quite a big limitation in my opinion.
Here is the full list of supported js in custom templates and RegExp isn't there. Hope they'll add it in the future: https://developers.google.com/tag-platform/tag-manager/templates/standard-library
I am working with the Google Ads team in my company on a Shopify store and they asked me for some regular expressions for the several steps of the checkout process. I created them and everything was running fine, until the guys noticed that sometimes Analytics added a _ga paremeter to the URL query parameters.
My original expressions are:
1. When in cart - no problem here
\/cart
2. First step of checkout - Contact Information - In several lines for easier reading
(
\/([0-9]*)\/checkouts\/([a-z0-9\-]*)$
|
\/([0-9]*)\/checkouts\/([a-z0-9\-]*)\?step=contact_information
)
In this part I added the step=contact_information as an OR option. It isn't normally there except for when you go back to contact information it is added to the URL as step. I know this is not the ideal way, but I am far from fluent in regex.
3. Shipping information
(
\/([0-9]*)\/checkouts\/([a-z0-9\-]*)\?step=shipping_method
|
\/([0-9]*)\/checkouts\/([a-z0-9\-]*)?(.*)&step=shipping_method
)
In this part it always has step=shipping_method but it can also have previous_step=contact_information. This is also not ideal, but I am not sure how to do it.
4. Payment information
(
\/([0-9]*)\/checkouts\/([a-z0-9\-]*)\?step=payment_method
|
\/([0-9]*)\/checkouts\/([a-z0-9\-]*)?(.*)&step=payment_method
)
The same as step 3, in this case it always has step=payment_method but it can also have previous_step=shipping_method. As points 2 and 3, not ideal.
5. Processing - this part works fine, because I am not interested in the query parameters
\/([0-9]*)\/checkouts\/([a-z0-9\-]*)\/processing
6. Thank you page - this also works fine, because I am not interested in the query parameters
\/([0-9]*)\/checkouts\/([a-z0-9\-]*)\/thank_you
Issue with _ga parameter
Those regular expressions work fine with the regular URLs, but when I add the _ga parameter to the URL they don't match. I think there was a way to match query parameters, but I am not sure how to match certain and exclude others.
The _ga parameter normally persists on the next steps

Any ideas how I could solve this? I am pretty sure it's simple, but my brain just doesn't get around more complex regular expressions :)
UPDATE
Just to clear this up a bit more, what I need to achieve with the regular expressions is to identify specifically the step of the funnel.
The Google Ads guys from my team are creating a funnel in Analytics and they add the corresponding steps from the checkout as stages of the funnel.
So basically I just need my regexes to be able to work with or without the _ga query, BUT always detecting a specific step.
UPDATE 2
I added all the possible matches. I need to be able to identify the specific step through the regular expression. So basically I need one regular expression for contact information, one for shipping method and one for payment method, each identifying only the specific step with or without _ga in the URL.
I believe for the checkout url you can simply use this regex:
/([0-9]+)/checkouts/([a-z0-9-]+)(?:.*step=([a-z0-9_-]+))?
no matter if the url is with/without _ga parameter.
Basically it will provide you three groups in a match, the third group will contain step parameter value, e.g.: contact_information

I just played with ember routing example. It looks quite interesting. Especially if you are going to build all your application on Ember framework.
But parameters in url follows after '#'. That means you can't copy and send a link to someone if client has to login with postback (if only to set a cookie with login parameters). Is there a better option - maybe use '?' instead of '#'?
You may also have a look at Ember.Router.
There are two good start points # https://gist.github.com/2679013 and https://gist.github.com/2728699
A lot of fixes have been made the last couple of days.
EDIT
A brand new guide is now available # https://emberjs-staging-new.herokuapp.com/guides/outlets#toc_the-router
Here is a full example courtesy of https://github.com/jbrown

I need to write a CI route so that it loads the right controller. What I want to do is write a route that excludes the "features" controller. Here are my routes (but the first one doesn't work).
$route['(\w{2})/(\w{2})/products/([\w]+!features)'] = "products/products/$3"; // folder/controller/method
$route['(\w{2})/(\w{2})/products/features/([\w]+)'] = "products/features/$3"; // folder/controller/method
What I want to have happen is the top line should load any controller that is not the features controller. But I am getting conflicts between the two lines. I've tried placing the "!features" in a couple of different places in the line, with and without quotes and I'm still getting either the features controller to load or one of the other methods in the products controller to load. But not both. Can someone help out here? Thanks.
Try changing the first line to:
$route['(\w{2})/(\w{2})/products/(?!features$)(\w+)'] = "products/products/$3";
(?!foo) is a negative lookahead, if fails if whatever is following it matches foo.
$ means end of string, and is there to make sure that features is not part of a longer word.
I've been trying to programmatically reproduce the behavior of editing a Content Type's field properties in the SharePoint site management screen and selecting the "Required" radio button with no sucess using the WSS 3.0 web service's Webs.asmx "UpdateContentType" method.
The first difficulty was the issue with the MSDN documentation that said fields should be of a FieldRef type when in fact they need to be of a Field type (reference). Adding fields and deleting fields works fine after the fix, but updating fields seems to not function at all. (It should also be noted that I followed the recommendation on the previous link to use Method="2" for updating fields but it changes nothing, and using Method values other than 1 for adding or other than 3 for deleting also function correctly).
Here's the web service call (slightly modified with strings instead of XmlNode objects for readability):
SharePointWebServices.Webs webService = new SharePointWebServices.Webs();
webService.Url = "http://mysharepointserver/site";
webService.UseDefaultCredentials = true;
webService.UpdateContentType(
#"0x01005A089D9EC8A382458FB1F6C72096D52A",
#"<ContentType />",
#"<Fields />",
#"<Fields><Method ID=""1""><Field Name=""SomeField"" ID=""{8a4803c4-6545-4a7a-804d-237eebff0ce3}"" Required=""TRUE"" Hidden=""FALSE"" ReadOnly=""FALSE"" PITarget="""" PIAttribute="""" PrimaryPIAttribute="""" Aggregation="""" Node="""" /></Method></Fields>",
#"<Fields />");
After the call, the field is still Required="FALSE".
A quick look into the stssoap.dll assembly indicates that the "Required" property is apparently ignored during the update process. Is this normal behavior? If so, what is the recommended method for programmatically changing the "Required" field from client code (not executing on the SharePoint server)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've investigated this and found the same thing. I also tried adding the attribute Cmd="Update" to the Method element without success. This example of how to use UpdateContentType was helpful too.
I don't believe you will be able to do this with the out-of-the-box SharePoint services. You've verified from looking at stssoap.dll that this doesn't appear to work correctly. Another 'client'-style option is to use RPC methods but none appear to provide functionality for content types at all.
The web services are particularly frustrating because this type of not-so-edge case regularly comes up. It is very rare that I consider using them because of the time wasting involved with their limitations.
Do you have any option of deploying custom code to the server? You could develop this functionality using the object model and wrap it in your own custom web service (there is a walkthrough here) quite easily.
Here is an example adapted from Gabe Wishnie that does what you require:
SPContentType myContentType = myWeb.ContentTypes["myContentType"];
string internalName = myContentType.Fields["fieldToUpdate"].InternalName;
myContentType.FieldLinks[internalName].Required = false;
myContentType.Update(true);
Sorry this isn't more helpful but it's a common story when using the WSS 3.0 / SharePoint 2007 web services.
