Sitecore 6: Duplicate controls appearing on device layout - sitecore

Background:
We have a sitecore 6 installation with a bit of custom code to detect devices (and origins), and switch to a different (custom) device definition in sitecore. This has the effect of changing templates, and controls where appropriate.
This all works fine.
However.
When we select a node in the content tree, go to the Presentation Tab, click Details to get the Layout Details windows, then edit a device item to add controls we see that duplicates are being added to the devices - not just the one we are editing either. It seems to "double up" what is there - but it never changes the "Default" layout.
I have checked the usual suspects (i.e. all connection strings are correct, pointing to the right databases) but I still get duplicates on saving. The duplicate does not appear on edit - but save - it seems.
Any suggestions on how to track this down, as its causing a nightmare for us.
Sitecore Version : 6.4.1 (rev:110324)

This is a known issue that can be solved by specifying a layout (Mobile Layout and Main Layout, in your case) on the standard values of your template.

Final Layout being wiped out when editing text field in Sitecore 8.1

I have a strange issue whereby when I edit a rich text field in the experience editor and save the page, it takes me to the layout not found page.
When switching back to the content editor, I can see that final layout has been completely wiped (the shared remains intact). I've noticed that if I change to the shared layout within the experience editor (via the presentation tab) and perform the same edit - it works fine.
What would cause the final layout to be wiped?
I've noticed that this can be caused by having Final Renderings set on a template's standard values. Currently I can't think of a reason to do this but I can see how it's very easy to accidentally edit a standard values item in the experience editor in the wrong mode.
It's easy to reset presentation details back to standard values in Sitecore, but to my knowledge you can't reset just the final renderings. To avoid having to go through each failing template and manually reset and re-add all the added renderings I've found an easy way to fix it if you have TDS (or similar) installed.
Search for __Final in the /Sitecore/templates folder in the file system.
Delete all the instances of this __Final Renderings field (From the '----field----' line until the next one).
Sync with Sitecore.
Not really a fix to the issue, but when I had to fix >20 templates where this was happening it saved me a lot of time and thought it was worth a share.

sitecore editframe button support multilanguage

I have been playing around with Editframe buttons in a Sitecore 8 for a multilingual project and I have the feeling that Edit Frame buttons do not work properly on sitecore multilingual sites.
Were you able to get it working edit frame buttons with a multilingual implementation?
Is it working out of the box or do you need any special configuration?
My experience is that when I am on a localized page and I click on an EditFrame button, it will open the default language Item instead of the localised item. I am of the impression that this is what happen when you click on Edit the Related Item in the Experience Editor.
I encountered your scenario very recently.
Were you able to get it working edit frame buttons with a multilingual implementation?
Yes, all the Fields I set up within the Edit Frame Buttons in the Core worked correctly with my Multilingual Site
Is it working out of the box or do you need any special configuration?
You need to add your Field Names into the Edit Frame Button Items in the Core database, found at the out-of-the-box path; /sitecore/content/Applications/WebEdit/Edit Frame Buttons/Default/Edit. Make sure your sc:Edit component references this path in the Buttons property
You may use different Display Names of the Fields for each of your languages for ease of use in the Content Editor / Experience Editor but as long as they are display Names it should be fine. If they are not and it doesn't work I recommend putting the Field Name for each language in the Edit Frame Item.
When I click on an EditFrame button, will it open the default language Item instead than the localised item, I am of the impression that this is what happen when you click on Edit The Related item as well
No, in both instances the Item will be loaded in the correct Language as well as when you create a new Datasource Item to be referenced by your Component.
The biggest issue that is present is when Edit the Relating Item and make changes to Rich Text Editor field or TreeEx field is that when you save it, it saves it to the default enlanguage, even creating a Language Version for it if it does not exist.
I have raised this issue with Sitecore Support and they are currently investigating. When they have a fix I'll update you with their solution.
EDIT
The Support Patch to resolve the issue Edit the Relating Item saving changes to the wrong language version of the Item can be found here - https://kb.sitecore.net/articles/814090

How to better manage versions in Sitecore Page Editor

The way that Page Editor handles versions has been causing issues for in one of our Sitecore solutions for a client. I've posted about them here:
Sitecore instance showing incorrect workflow state in Page Editor
Expected usage of Page Editor's Experience date
I didn't get much response on those and so far I've surmised that this is just how Sitecore works. This is less than ideal for our instance, as when publishing restrictions are set, authors don't know which version they're editing which is causing various issues for them.
I'd like to implement a solution(s) to improve the experience provide the following functionality:
Something in the Experience tab that shows the number of the version being viewed.
A button on the Experience tab that resets the Date to the default (this is not simply setting the date to the current date/time, but resetting it to act as it did before a date was manually set).
A custom button in Content Editor which allows an author to open a specific version in Page Editor...set the date automatically when it opens, I guess.
An any one give me some clues on how much of this is possible and where to start?
Thanks.
For the first bullet "Something in the Experience tab that shows the number of the version being viewed", you can add version item in Core database.
Move to "Core" DB in Desktop Mode
Navigate to "/sitecore/content/Applications/WebEdit/Ribbons/WebEdit/Experience/"
Create "Versions" item like this, http://imgur.com/bPEDm7R
Create "Compare" item under "Versions" like this, http://imgur.com/dG8dz2M
The result like this, http://imgur.com/HPu3XAL
The content author can see which version they are using and they can also compare with previous versions.

Sitecore personalisation - DropLink

Not fully used personalisaiton yet, so have what I hope is an easy question.
My page is setup where users can use a droplink to pick content for 3 "slots" on the homepage, from a "bucket" of available content items that can appear.
I want to use a "rule" to show different items in each slot, depending on if the rule is met or not, but I can't seem to work out where I set this.
Right now, my page editor view is broken (currently have an open ticket with Sitecore for work out why this is), so I am hoping this can be done from the content editor.
I have already ticked the "Show the Personalization Section" under Application Options.
This sounds like a conditional rendering rule that you're wanting to create. If that is the case, unless you want to apply the rule to ALL renderings (which I wouldn't recommend), you would create the rule under
System -> Marketing Center -> Personalization -> Rules. Here you can set up a conditional rendering rule that will check conditions and then do something. Since this is going to apply to presentation, the actions are limited. Mostly to presentation.
Now to apply that, you go to the layout details on the item or the standard values for the item template. When you click on the rendering (like you would to set a data source), it brings you to the edit screen and you should be able to scroll down to the Personalization section. If your rule is not in the list, then it's most likely in the wrong place. Anyway, if it's there, you simply put a check next to that box and it will now apply that rule when figuring out the layout details when the item is rendered.

Sitecore item will not go into edit mode; any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?

I have several Sitecore items (whose template is connected to an approval workflow) that will not go into Edit mode when clicking "Edit" from the "Review" tab. The same workflow is used elsewhere on the site successfully (the site is more than 3 years old), but clicking Edit in this case doesn't seem to affect the workflow state.
I've turned on verbose logging, which provides a lot of detail, but nothing to indicate any error conditions. I've been comparing how this template is configured with other "working" templates for a couple of days and everything looks Kosher, but surely I'm missing something obvious.
EDIT: The item(s) in question are imported by a data provider, and I've confirmed that for some reason Sitecore is not setting the "Workflow" and "State" system standard fields with a default value. That appears to be at least part of the issue.
EDIT 2: Followed the steps in this thread http://sdn.sitecore.net/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=45991 to use Sitecore Rocks to update all of the items to the correct Workflow State, but the update did not stick. For some reason workflow changes are not persisted for imported items.
EDIT 3: Clicking the Edit dropdown button under the Home tab displays the message "The item is currently not part of a workflow."
Standard values set correctly? Only have one Standard Values item for this template?
Generally, almost every time I run into a situation where X works on certain items, but not on others... it's a permissions issue. You've tested this as an Administrator I hope?
Sorry my suggestions are so vague, but it's hard to be specific here. We need some more information from you... When you click on Edit what exactly are you expecting to happen? I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "Edit mode" here. In Content Editor, all items are essentially in edit mode all the time... In my configuration, when I click on Edit, I am just locking the item. It does not change workflow state or create a new version.
These items are coming from a data provider... is your data provider handling Lock/Unlock calls properly? I know it's possible to use a data provider without implementing the entire Item API.
