Django : render a view in other views - django

I'd like to "include" a view in all my other views.
Look at my website : www.urlc.be
The "Classement" on the right is displayed on every page but I don't know how to include it the "django style". Right now I'm using AJAX call to display the "Classement" on each page.
Can you help me find a better solution ?
Thanks.

If you need the table on every page i would use an inclusion tag and include it in the base template that all relevant pages inherit from.

There are several approaches you can take to that. One is to write some middleware to add some more data to each response as it leaves the view. The other would be to write your own template tag to render the section in question. Look here for middleware and here for template tags.

Render a block through a template that will be added to an existing page as well as it's own

I have a page which is for album/picture management with 2 sections: Albums and Pictures.
When an album is selected the pictures block needs to change via AJAX to reflect the album selected.
This means the rendered pictures block needs to be provided to the Albums page as well as be available as it's own View for the AJAX source.
I understand I could solve this by making the pictures block always render from AJAX even when the album page loads, however I would like to deliver the default album pictures within the initial page load if possible. In order to do that, I'd like to render the pictures block via the same template in the Album page view as is used for the Picture AJAX View.
I'm only familiar with providing templates as a template_name property within an TemplateView object.
I guess I could simply call an instance of PictureView using inclusion_tag, and pull the data I need out of the render_to_response (I haven't tried this yet, I'm just theorizing) however that seems a bit dirty to me. I'm wondering if there's a more elegant solution to this problem?
Thanks!
jQuery, Django templates, JS templating and backbone.js should tie this together.
I would suggest having a dedicated template for the Pages block. Include this template in the Django template for your page.
For dynamic updates use a JS templating library such as included in underscore.js or moustache.js. You can change the template demlimiters used so that they are the same as djangos.
Include the raw Pages block template into a javascript template block - use the django ssi tag.
Use django-tastypie to set up an api that returns the data for Photos as JSON. Your template library can then use data to fill in the template in the JS template block and you can then replace the Photo block with this rendered HTML. Use of backbone.js should ease the tying of DOM elements and JS events.
If I understand your question correctly, I did something similar once with the subsection having its own template file, which only describes that one section of the page. I used the include tag to include it into the page template, so it loaded when the page did and then rendered that template with updated values and replaced it on the page with AJAX when the content was meant to change.
Is that an option for you?

Combining multiple Django Views/Templates

I am working on a website. On the Homepage, I want to show the posts in the center and show famous tags on the right side of the page. Now, posts and tags are two different apps and their views/tempaltes are calculated/generated in two separate functions.
How can I show what I want on my Homepage keeping my mind that its two different views being called. As far as I understand, I can only call a single view to show my homepage.
This must be possible but I am unable to understand this. Any help will be much appreciated.
I think you need to create a custom template tag that in this case called: Inclusion tags
You can look into writing a custom template tag for the tags. That way the tag logic can stay in the right application.
It depends how these different apps render the templates. If they just render the template without extending from a base template you could simply use AJAX to load all the content into your homepage.
If not, then there is no other way than writing a custom solution for this. This could be an extension to your views, a custom template tag as already mentioned or something else according to what exactly you need.

Include a page in the template script in magnolia cms

How can I include a page from magnolia into a magnolia template script?
In the template script with I can access data from a specific page, but how can I load that page into the template?
Let's say I have 2 pages each with its own template. Page 1 contains in its tree page 2. I want to include in the template script of page 1, page 2, but doesn't work.
Thank you very much :)
UPDATED
What I actually want to do is include my header in all of my project's pages. But I don't want to put it as a paragraph, because if I ever want to change my header, I'll have to edit all the project's pages.
So what I try to do and I don't know if this is the correct approach is to create a page template for the header. This template won't include any , or css, it's just the code for the header.
The next thing I want to do is create a page in magnolia with that model to be the header.
Next I'd like to include the page I've just created in my main template model for the project, but I can't figure how to do that.
I am new to Magnolia cms and initially I tried creating my demo site using stk. The only problem was that I couldn't use jsp as a scripting language, or at least I couldn't find any solution on the internet. I don't really know freemarker, but that's not really a big problem. I'm really reluctant in using freemarker because maybe in the future in a more complex project I might need some features that freemarker doesn't support, but jsp does. I'd like to build my site using jsp if that's possible with magnolia.
I'm sorry for this long update, but if anyone has any suggestions on what a best practice could be and if I could implement what I want in jsp I would be really grateful.
Thanks again for you time :)
If you're using the STK then see this guide on content-reuse.
If not have a look at the cms tag-lib, especially the tags cms:loadPage and cms:setNode with which you can get a piece of content and set it as a JSP/JSTL variable and then render it using cms:includeTemplate.
A common scenario is to 'inherit' content from the parent page, the header is an excellent example of this. What you do is for an area you walk up the content hierarchy and render everything from the parent pages in their area with the same name. This way the header which you've only added to the top page is included in all its children.
Another option is to a have special page which simply holds things to be included in other pages. Like header, footer and banners that should go in the side pane of some pages.
Including a page within another page doesn't really work. Page 2 already has its own <html> tags, its own <script> tags, and its own CSS, so including it wholesale into another page just simply doesn't make sense.
You do, however, have a couple of options:
Use an iframe. This will allow you to include the entirety of Page 2 in a region of Page 1.
More recent versions of Magnolia will allow you to render an individual paragraph, which you could then include in another page. (For example, you can see a single paragraph from http://demopublic.magnolia-cms.com/demo-project/about/subsection-articles.html at http://demopublic.magnolia-cms.com/demo-project/about/subsection-articles/article/main/0.html.) This requires knowing a bit about the way the data is structured, but is a pretty useful way to be able to selectively extracts bits of a page.
You can use the Magnolia API in your model class to pull data from sub-pages, and then make it available to your view template. This is the approach the STK uses to build teasers that include content from the pages they reference, and is probably the most powerful and flexible approach, but it does require actually writing some Java code. (See http://documentation.magnolia-cms.com/templating/stk/templating.html and http://documentation.magnolia-cms.com/reference/templating.html for details of how to use this approach.)
(Added after question was edited) The footer functionality that's included with the STK does almost exactly this. You might be interested to take a look at that and see how it's implemented there.
Hope that helps a bit!

Django - Static content display based on URL

I'm working on a Django site with a basic three column design. Left column navigation, center column content and right column URL specific content blocks.
My question is about the best method of controlling the URL specific content blocks in the right column.
I am thinking of something along the lines of the Flatpages app that will make the content available to the template context if the URL matches a pre-determined pattern (perhaps regex?).
Does anyone know if such an app already exists?
If not, I am looking for some advice about the best way to implement it. Particularly in relation to the matching of patterns to the current URL. Is there any good way to re-use parts of the Django URL dispatcher for this use?
Django CMS is a good suggestion, it depends on how deep you want to go. If this is just the beginning of different sorts of dynamic content you want then you should go that way for sure.
A simple one-off solution would be something like this:
You would just need to write a view and add some variables on the end of the URL that would define what showed up there. Depending on how fancy you need to get, you could just create a simple models, and just map the view to the model key
www.example.com/content/sidecontent/jokes/
so if "jokes" was your block of variable sidecontent (one of many in your sides model instances) the urls.py entry for that would be
(r'^content/sidecontent/(?P<side>)/$,sides.views.showsides),
and then in your sides app you have a view with a
def showsides(request, side):
Sides.objects.get(pk=side)
etc...
For something like this I personally would use Django CMS. It's like flatpages on steroids.
Django CMS has a concept of Pages, Templates, and Plugins. Each page has an associated template. Templates have placeholders where you can insert different plugins. Plugins are like mini-applications that can have dynamic model-based content.
Although Django-CMS is an interesting suggestion, there are quite a few projects that do specifically what you've requested - render blocks of content based on a URL. The main one that I know about is django-flatblocks.

Multiple views loaded into a template

Hay guys, in PHP when i want to load a differnet page (render, with all variables outputting) i would use
include 'mypage.php'
This would load the page up and render the output.
How do i do something like this in Django? My problem is that i have a "quick list" which lists a bunch of popular items. I want this list to appear on every page, even if i don't call the object.
any ideas?
EDIT: The view is called shop.app.popular_items
You can use Inclusion tags.
Use template context_processors
To answer your question to becomingGuru on when to use context processors and when to use inclusion tags, remember that context processors are run on every template render. So they should only be used when you know you will always need the value.
Edit:
After Daniel's answer and as you said you want to have it on every page,
becomingGuru's answer is probably the best solution.
This does not belong into the view (if you not want to display this as a standalone page).
This should go into a custom template tag.
