Writing a large array in one line using jsoncpp's StyledWriter - c++

I'm using jsoncpp to read and write json files.
For writing, I use the StyledWriter, which writes the json in a human readable fashion.
Currently, I'm trying to write an array of ints into a json file. The documentation describes the following rules for writing an array value:
if empty then print [] without indent and line break
if the array contains no object value, empty array or some other value types, and all the values fit on one lines, then print the array on a single line.
otherwise, if the values do not fit on one line, or the array contains object or non empty array, then print one value per line.
Since the array I'm trying to write is too big for one line, according to the rules above, the writer prints it one value per line, which makes my json ugly and less readable. I would prefer it to write the whole array in one line or in several lines, with several values per line.
I'm aware of the fact that jasoncpp is opensource and thus I can change the writer to do what I want,
but I'm wondering if there's a different way to do it. Maybe using both FastWriter (which creates a one-line-json) and StyledWriter?

You should use FastWriter as follows:

Reading from a file without skipping whitespaces

I'm trying to make a code which would change one given word from a file, and change it into another one. The program works in a way that it copies word by word, if it's normal word it just writes it into the output file, and if it's the one i need to change it writes the one i need to change to. However, I've enountered a problem. Program is not putting whitespaces where they are in the input file. I don't know the solution to this problem, and I have no idea if I can use noskipws since I wouldn't know where the file ends.
Please keep in mind I'm a complete newbie and I have no idea how things work. I don't know if the tags are visible enough, so I will mention again that I use C++
Since each reading of word is ended with either a whitespace or end of file, you could simply check whether the thing which stop your reading is end of file, or otherwise a whitespace:
if ( reached the end of file ) {

And the problem here is how to check the eof(end of file).
Since you are using ifstream, things will be quite simple.
When a ifstream reach the end of file (all the meaningful data have been read), the ifstream::eof() function will return true.
Let's assume the ifstream instance that you have is called input.

PS : ifstream::good() will return false when it reaches the eof or an error occurs. Checking whether input.good() == false instead can be a better choice here.
First I would advise you not to read and write in the same file (at least not during reading) because it will make your program much more difficult to write/read.
Second if you want to read all whitespaces easiest is to read whole line with getline().
Program that you can use for modifying words from one file to another could look something like following:

seekg() not working as expected

I have a small program, that is meant to copy a small phrase from a file, but it appears that I am either misinformed as to how seekg() works, or there is a problem in my code preventing the function from working as expected.
The text file contains:

The code is meant to copy the word "false" into a string

But for whatever reason, the program outputs:
=false
What I expected to happen:
I believe that I placed the get pointer at the 24th index of the file, which is where the phrase "false" begins. Then the program would've inputted from that index onward until a space character would have been met, or the end of the file would have been met.
What actually happened:
For whatever reason, the get pointer started an index before expected. And I'm not sure as to why. An explanation as to what is going wrong/what I'm doing wrong would be much appreciated.
Also, I do understand that I could simply make previouslyNotedStr a substring of statsStr, starting from where I wish, and I've already tried that with success. I'm really just experimenting here.
The VisualC++ tag means you are on windows. On Windows the end of line takes two characters (\r\n). When you read the file in a string at a time, this end-of-line sequence is treated as a delimiter and you replace it with a single space character.
Therefore after you read the file you statsStr does not match the contents of the file. Every where there is a new line in the file you have replaced two characters with one. Hence when you use seekg to position yourself in the file based on numbers you got from the statsStr string, you end up in the wrong place.
Even if you get the new line handling correct, you will still encounter problems if the file contains two or more consecutive white space characters, because these will be collapsed into a single space character by your read loop.
You are reading the file word by word. There are better methods:

By reading entire text lines into a string, there is no need to reposition the file.
Also, there is a white-space issue when reading by word. This will affect where you think the text is in the file. For example, white space is skipped, and there is no telling how many spaces, newlines or tabs were skipped.
By the way, don't even think about replacing the text in the same file. Replacement of text only works if the replacement text has the same length as the original text in the file. Write to a new file instead.
Edit 1:
A better method is to declare your key strings as array. This helps with positioning pointers within a string:

You may want to save programming type by making your data file conform to an existing format, such as INI or XML, and using appropriate libraries to parse them.

Reading string by char till end of line C/C++ [duplicate]

How to read a string one char at the time, and stop when you reach end of line? I'am using fgetc function to read from file and put chars to array (latter will change array to malloc), but can't figure out how to stop when the end of line is reached
Tried this (c is the variable with char from file):
if(c=="\0")
But it gives error that I cant compare pointer to integer
File looks like (the length of the words are unknown):
one
two
three
So here comes the questions:
1) Can I compare c with \0 as \0 is two symbols (\ and 0) or is it counted as one (same question with \n)
2) Maybe I should use \n ?
3) If suggestions above are wrong what would you suggest (note I must read string one char at the time)

You want to use single quotes:
if(c=='\0')
Double quotes (") are for strings, which are sequences of characters. Single quotes (') are for individual characters.
However, the end-of-line is represented by the newline character, which is '\n'.
Note that in both cases, the backslash is not part of the character, but just a way you represent special characters. Using backslashes you can represent various unprintable characters and also characters which would otherwise confuse the compiler.
The answer to your original question

is, in C++, very simply, namely: use getline. The link shows a simple example:

Do you really want to do this in C? I wouldn't! The thing is, in C, you have to allocate the memory in which to place the characters you read in? How many characters? You don't know ahead of time. If you allocate too few characters, you will have to allocate a new buffer every time to realize you reading more characters than you made room for. If you over-allocate, you are wasting space.
C is a language for low-level programming. If you are new to programming and writing simple applications for reading files line-by-line, just use C++. It does all that memory allocation for you.
Your later questions regarding "\0" and end-of-lines in general were answered by others and do apply to C as well as C++. But if you are using C, please remember that it's not just the end-of-line that matters, but memory allocation as well. And you will have to be careful not to overrun your buffer.
If you are using C function fgetc then you should check a next character whether it is equal to the new line character or to EOF. For example

Of course you need to insert your own processing of read xgaracters. It is only an example how you could use function fgetc to read lines of a file.
But if the program is written in C++ then it would be much better if you would use std::ifstream and std::string classes and function std::getline to read a whole line.
A text file does not have \0 at the end of lines. It has \n. \n is a character, not a string, so it must be enclosed in single quotes

Pull out data from a file and store it in strings in C++

I have a file which contains records of students in the following format.
Umar|Ejaz|12345|umar#umar.com
Majid|Hussain|12345|majid#majid.com
Ali|Akbar|12345|ali#geeks-inn.com
Mahtab|Maqsood|12345|mahtab#myself.com
Juanid|Asghar|12345|junaid#junaid.com
The data has been stored according to the following format:
firstName|lastName|contactNumber|email
The total number of lines(records) can not exceed the limit 100. In my program, I've defined the following string variables.

Now, I want to pull data from the file, and using the delimiter '|', I want to put data in the corresponding strings. I'm using the following strategy to put back data into string variables.

Is it necessary to attach null character '\0' at the end of each string? And if I do not attach, will it create problems when I will be actually implementing those string variables in my program. I'm a new to C++, and I've come up with this solution. If anybody has better technique, he is surely welcome.
Edit: Also I can't compare a char(acter) with endl, how can I?

Note: I can only use .txt file. A .csv file can't be used.
There are many techniques to do this. I suggest searching StackOveflow for "[C++] read file" to see some more methods.
Find and Substring
You could use the std::string::find method to find the delimiter and then use std::string::substr to return a substring between the position and the delimiter.

If you don't terminate a a C-style string with a null character there is no way to determine where the string ends. Thus, you'll need to terminate the strings.
I would personally read the data into std::string objects:
std::string first, last, etc;

&& std::getline(readFromFile, etc)) {

std::endl is a manipulator implemented as a function template. You can't compare a char with that. There is also hardly ever a reason to use std::endl because it flushes the stream after adding a newline which makes writing really slow. You probably meant to compare to a newline character, i.e., to '\n'. However, since you read the string with std::getline() the line break character will already be removed! You need to make sure you don't access more than temp.size() characters otherwise.
Your record also contains arrays of strings rather than arrays of characters and you assign individual chars to them. You either wanted to yse char something[SIZE] or you'd store strings!

Simple C++ File I/O issue

It's been a while since I've worked with File I/O in C++ (and just C++ in general) but I recently decided to use it to make a small console project for a friend.
My issue is that I'm having some issues with a string array and File I/O (I'm not sure which is causing the problem). My code is as follows (ReadPSWDS is an ifstream):

My issue is that on testing this out, the string array would appear to be empty (and on writing all those lines to a file, the file is empty as expected).
Why is the string array empty and not filled with the appropriate lines of the text file?

The loop you've written is clearly wrong: you're testing eof() before
failure, and you're not testing for failure after the getline. C++
I/O isn't predictive. (I can't be, since whether you're at eof() will
depend on what you try to read.) The correct pattern would be:
while ( i < size(str) && getline( readSWDS, str[i] ) ) {
if ( !str[i].empty() ) {
++ i;
}
Note that I've added a test for i. As written, if your file contains
more than 200 lines, you're in deep trouble.
I'm not sure that this is your problem, however; the loop as you've
written it will normally only cause problems on the last line.
(Typically, if the last line ends with a '\n', and is not empty, it
will appear twice in your array.) Unless, of course, your file does
contain more than 200 lines.
I might add that an even more typical idiom would be to make str an
std::vector<std::string>, and write the loop:
std::string line;
while ( std::getline( readSWDS, line ) ) {
if ( !line.empty() ) {
str.push_back(line);
}
}
This avoids having to define a fixed maximum number of lines.
