visual c++ 2005 x64? - c++

Could somebody please point me at the download link for Visual C++ 2005 Express x64 (AKA Visual Studio 8) before I am sectioned under the mental health act?
If I want any GCC point release from the last 10 years I can get it in under 30 seconds from a single page. Microsoft's website is a nightmare beyond imagining. Even Google can't get me what I'm looking for. Hours of my life have now disappeared. Please don't post a link to an article from Microsoft about this because I have read them all. I've been through pages which link to other pages, which then loop back on themselves, or point to dead links, or purport to offer a download but which actually link back to marketing material and stock photographs of people laughing at computer screens.

That will give you Visual C++ 2005 SP1.

There is not a separate package for installing Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition -- or any of the Visual Studio 2005 products -- on x64.

If you just want the 64-bit compiler (no IDE) then you can download it as part of the Windows Vista SDK.

Is it possible to target windows 10.0.14393 with C++/WinRT?

I would like to make an app for my Lumia stuck on Win 10.0.14393 (or 1609) using C++/WinRT. I've created a Blank app project with
Target platform version: 10.0.17134.0 and
Target platform min. version: 10.0.14393.
The project fails to compile with the following errors:
error C2039: 'DisconnectUnloadedObject': is not a member of 'winrt::BlankApp2::implementation::MainPageT'
error C2039: 'UnloadObject': is not a member of 'winrt::BlankApp2::implementation::MainPageT'
Is this a bug or intentional behavior? Please note, that setting any newer min. version results in successful build.
The latest version of C++/WinRT can support all versions of Windows 10, including 14393 and older versions as well.
Keep in mind that C++/WinRT is both a library and a language projection. The language projection provides access to Windows APIs targeting a given version of Windows. Each version introduces new APIs. So if you want to target a minimum version of Windows, you need to ensure that you limit yourself to the APIs available on that version of Windows. I would however recommend using the latest compiler and the latest Windows SDK as they include many bug fixes.
I suggest you use Visual Studio 2015 when targeting older C++/WinRT and Windows 10 updates. My impression is that most of those were delivered on top of Visual Studio 2015 with Visual Studio 2015 updates and Windows 10 SDK updates and C++/WinRT updates.
When using Visual Studio 2015 with C++/WinRT, you will need the latest update, Update 3. Check for updates and make sure that your copy of Visual Studio 2015 has the most recent updates. I was just using an install of Visual Studio 2015 Enterprise to recompile something that compiles fine with Visual Studio 2017 and found that I was missing tools and SDKs including for Win 10 SDK 10.0.14393 that were in the Update 3 which I had not yet installed.
You can also go to Programs and Feature from within Control Panel, look for Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 in the list and then do a right mouse click and Change which will allow you to check what is installed and change anything.
Working with C++/WinRT over the last few months I have used both the Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition and the Visual Studio 2015 Enterprise Edition.

Working with the latest Windows 10 updates and VS 2017 works best for me because I am able to target the recent Windows 10 updates. However I have found that trying to target older Windows 10 updates with VS 2017 can be problematic.
I'm sorry that I can not be more specific. This whole area of C++/WinRT and Windows 10 updates has much more cowboy than I would like though it now seems to be settling down.
C++/WinRT is a template library that was originally an open source project on GitHub. My impression is that Microsoft has acquired it and it is now a standard product offering. I believe there was a significant rewrite of C++/WinRT at one time as the Visual Studio 2015 and then Visual Studio 2017 moved to implement more of the C++17 and proposed C++20 standards and the Technical Specifications for coroutines.
This seems to be an area still changing to some extent. However most of the changing was going on with VS 2015 and the early VS 2017 along with the SDKs. It seems to be pretty solid now with the latest updates.

Visual Studio /SUBSYSTEM:POSIX not appearing in 2008

I have installed visual studio 2008 Professional Edition and I am not able to set /SUBSYSTEM:POSIX option in one of the visual C++ projects. I also installed Visual Studio Debugger addin from SUA but still same. Please see attached screenshot for version information.

It's gone. However, Visual Studio does provide a bunch of header files to provide functionality that gets close (but not the same), such as direct.hfor directory operations.
Currently, the best way of getting POSIX on Windows is probably Cygwin or it's friends.
There is Windows Services for UNIX (SfU), but according to some it was quite close to what Cygwin was in 2006. Seeing how Cygwin and some of its comrads are live and well and SfU did not see an update in over half a decade, I would choose the former any day of the week.
If you are interested in a blast from the past, checkout this little nugget from 2006 which is Microsoft's official How to port from UNIX to Windows website. It seems rather useless, but funny what Microsoft thought is "useful" in 2006.

How to compile a 64-bit application using Visual C++ 2010 Express?

Is there a simple way to compile a 64 bit app with the 32-bit edition of Visual C++ 2010 Express? What configurations, if any, are necessary?
Here are step by step instructions:
Download and install the Windows Software Development Kit version 7.1. Visual C++ 2010 Express does not include a 64 bit compiler, but the SDK does. A link to the SDK: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb980924.aspx
Change your project configuration. Go to Properties of your project. On the top of the dialog box there will be a "Configuration" drop-down menu. Make sure that selects "All Configurations." There will also be a "Platform" drop-down that will read "Win32." Finally on the right there is a "Configuration Manager" button - press it. In the dialog that comes up, find your project, hit the Platform drop-down, select New, then select x64. Now change the "Active solution platform" drop-down menu to "x64." When you return to the Properties dialog box, the "Platform" drop-down should now read "x64."
Finally, change your toolset. In the Properties menu of your project, under Configuration Properties | General, change Platform Toolset from "v100" to "Windows7.1SDK".
These steps have worked for me, anyway. Some more details on step 2 can be found in a reference from Microsoft that a previous poster mentioned: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/9yb4317s.aspx.
64-bit tools are not available on

And make sure you download the Windows7.1 SDK, not just the Windows 7 one. That caused me a lot of head pounding.
I found an important step to add to this - after you've installed the SDK, go to your project properties and change Configuration Properties->General->Platform Toolset from v100 or whatever it is to Windows7.1SDK. This changes $(WindowsSdkDir) to the proper place and seemed to solve some other difficulties I was encountering as well.
Note that Visual C++ compilers are removed when you upgrade Visual Studio 2010 Professional or Visual Studio 2010 Express to Visual Studio 2010 SP1 if Windows SDK v7.1 is installed.

Download the Windows SDK and then go to View->Properties->Configuration Manager->Active Solution Platform->New->x64.
Programming in a 64-bit environment is quite different than 32-bit environment.
Code generated has totally different assembly constitution in 32 & 64-bit code, even the protocols of communicating with functions change. So you can't generate 64-bit code using 32-bit compiler.
You might want to see an article on Microsoft's web site about targeting a 64-bit target but using a 32-bit development machine.
As what Jakob said: windows sdk 7.1 cannot be installed if MS VC++ x64 and x86 runtimes and redisrtibutables of version 10.0.40219 are present. after removing them win sdk install is okay, VS C++ SP1 can be installed fine again.

Visual Studio 2008 C++ language support?

I've been developing a couple of C# tools recently, but primarily working with a lot of legacy Visual Basic 6.0 code (I know, I know...). For the C# development, I've been using Visual Studio 2008 Professional edition that I downloaded using our MSDN subscription here at work.
But, as a change of pace over the weekend, I was going to check out a complex C++ project that we have. However, when I went to open it through Visual Studio, it wouldn't open it saying that the .vcproj file type wasn't supported. I figured it was a compatibility issue and that the project file type had changed between versions of Visual Studio, but when I tried creating a new C++ application inside Visual Studio 2008 Pro, the option just wasn't there.
I've been searching online by way of Bing, Google, MSDN, and MSDN subscriber downloads to no avail. Nothing I've found so far explains why this is happening.
I have found the express edition of MS Visual C++ 2008, but I could not locate the "full version" of this part of Visual Studio.
Any help would be much appreciated.
It sounds like you haven't got it installed.
Go to Add/Remove Programs (or Programs and Features, or whatever Windows 7 calls it) and modify your installation. You'll get a list of checkboxes so you can install C#, VB.NET, Crystal Reports etc... and Visual C++. Check that checkbox and wait the hour or so for the installer to do its stuff.

Profiling in Visual Studio 2008 PRO

How do I use the profiler in Visual Studio 2008?
I know theres a build option in Config Properties -> Linker -> Advanced -> Profile (/PROFILE), however I can't find anything about actauly using it, only articles I was able to find appear to only apply to older versions of Visual Studio (eg most say to goto Build->Profile to bring up the profile dialog box, yet in 2008 there is no such menu item).
Is this because Visual Studio 2008 does not include a profiler, and if it does where is it and where is the documentation for it?

The profiler is only available in the Team System editions of Visual Studio 2008. The last version that I used that included a profiler was Visual C++ 6.0.
For Visual Studio 2005, you could try Compuware DevPartner Performance Analysis Community Edition.
There was also a list of .NET profilers in the What Are Some Good .NET Profilers question.
As I understood from reading a few sites, when you use VS 2008 stand alone profiler to create .vsp files, you will need either VS2008 Premium or Ultimate to view .vsp files.
By the way, I installed VS2012 Release candidate which is available for free (trial version?) and I can use its profiling engine.
