Mixing class and struct - c++

I'm well aware of the difference between class and struct, however I'm struggling to authoritatively say if this is well defined:

If this is undefined behaviour can someone point me in the direction of an authoritative (i.e. chapter and verse from ISO) reference?
The compiler with problems handling this (Carbide 2.7) is relatively old and all the other compilers I've tried it on are perfectly happy with this, but clearly that doesn't prove anything.
My intuition was this ought to be undefined behaviour but I can't find anything to confirm this and I'm surprised that none of the GCC versions or Comeau so much as warned about it.

It looks to me like it's defined behavior. In particular, §9.1/2 says:
A declaration consisting solely of class-key identifier ; is either a redeclaration of the
name in the current scope or a forward declaration of the identifier as a class name. It introduces the class name into the current scope.
The standard distinguishes between using class, struct or union when defining a class, but here, talking about a declaration, no such distinction is made -- using one class-key is equivalent to any other.

Technically the code is ok, according to the language standard. However, as at least one of the most popular compilers issues a warning for this, it doesn't work in practice.

From Warning C4099: type name first seen using 'class' now seen using 'struct' (MS VS 2k8) it appears that at least some compilers mangle differently depending on keyword used, so best not to rely on it even if it's technically allowed (of which I can't find a confirming reference).

In C++, a struct is a class. Specifically:
A structure is a class defined with
the class-key struct. (ISO/IEC FDIS
14882:1998(E) 9-4)
This implies that your class, which was not defined with struct, is definitely not a struct. Therefore, your forward declaration with the struct class-key is erroneous. I'm not aware of any part of the specification that allows a forward declaration to use a class-key that is clearly wrong. I'm sure that the lenient compilers in question treat structs and classes equally and are glossing over the incorrect declaration. An error may not be required from the compiler in this scenario, but neither should it be unexpected.

I have no idea whether or not this is undefined (or any of the other categories of not-strictly-conforming) per the C standard, but I do know that if you have two translation units that don't agree on whether a type 'foo' is declared as a 'class' or a 'struct', like so:

class foo { ... };

then, at least some compilers (notably MSVC++) will mangle the name of f differently in each translation unit, so the definition of f in TU 1 does not satisfy the reference to f in TU 2 and you get a link error. This comes up in real life when you have a header A.h that defines class A and needs to refer to classes B, C, and D but a forward declaration of them suffices (so it, quite sensibly, does not include B.h etc) -- you better use the same keyword for those forward declarations that the actual definitions do!

MSVC10 throws a warning, and the warning page states that the type given in the definition will be used.

Use 'using enum' in C++20 in classes possible?

In this answer it was mentioned that in the upcoming C++20 standard it is possible to use the using statement on enum class and import the enum fields into the local namespace.
I was wondering if that also means that I can also use it within class definitions like this:

Yes, Foo::Red will work fine. using enum E behaves as, from [enum.udecl]:
A using-enum-declaration introduces the enumerator names of the named enumeration as if by a using-declaration for each enumerator.
And the standard contains an example of exactly this case:

Note however that there is some controversy around the particular spelling for this feature. enum E is what's known as an elaborated type specifier (much like class C or struct S). Typically, elaborated type specifiers behave exactly the same was as their underlying versions. Elaborating is just meant to disambiguate, and you rarely need to disambiguate, so you wouldn't see it very often. However, in this particular case, using enum E and using E actually mean wildly different and wholly unrelated things. So keep in mind that there is a chance that this feature may not yet actually make C++20, despite currently being in the working draft and even having been published in the CD. As such, it's unlikely that compilers will implement this feature until they're sure it's necessary to implement (C++20 isn't exactly lacking in work for compiler writers...)

Errors when compiling with gcc version 4.8.5 but not 3.2.3: Weaker function disambiguation in 4.8.5? [duplicate]

If the classes below were not templates I could simply have x in the derived class. However, with the code below, I have to use this->x. Why?

Short answer: in order to make x a dependent name, so that lookup is deferred until the template parameter is known.
Long answer: when a compiler sees a template, it is supposed to perform certain checks immediately, without seeing the template parameter. Others are deferred until the parameter is known. It's called two-phase compilation, and MSVC doesn't do it but it's required by the standard and implemented by the other major compilers. If you like, the compiler must compile the template as soon as it sees it (to some kind of internal parse tree representation), and defer compiling the instantiation until later.
The checks that are performed on the template itself, rather than on particular instantiations of it, require that the compiler be able to resolve the grammar of the code in the template.
In C++ (and C), in order to resolve the grammar of code, you sometimes need to know whether something is a type or not. For example:

T::A would be a name that depends on T. We can't possibly know in phase 1 whether that's a type or not. The type which will eventually be used as T in an instantiation quite likely isn't even defined yet, and even if it was we don't know which type(s) will be used as our template parameter. But we have to resolve the grammar in order to do our precious phase 1 checks for ill-formed templates. So the standard has a rule for dependent names - the compiler must assume that they're non-types, unless qualified with typename to specify that they are types, or used in certain unambiguous contexts. For example in template <typename T> struct Foo : T::A {};, T::A is used as a base class and hence is unambiguously a type. If Foo is instantiated with some type that has a data member A instead of a nested type A, that's an error in the code doing the instantiation (phase 2), not an error in the template (phase 1).
But what about a class template with a dependent base class?

This would have the undesirable effect that every name in Foo is dependent, and hence every type used in Foo (except built-in types) has to be qualified. Inside of Foo, you'd have to write:

because std::string would be a dependent name, and hence assumed to be a non-type unless specified otherwise. Ouch!
A second problem with allowing your preferred code (return x;) is that even if Bar is defined before Foo, and x isn't a member in that definition, someone could later define a specialization of Bar for some type Baz, such that Bar<Baz> does have a data member x, and then instantiate Foo<Baz>. So in that instantiation, your template would return the data member instead of returning the global x. Or conversely if the base template definition of Bar had x, they could define a specialization without it, and your template would look for a global x to return in Foo<Baz>. I think this was judged to be just as surprising and distressing as the problem you have, but it's silently surprising, as opposed to throwing a surprising error.
To avoid these problems, the standard in effect says that dependent base classes of class templates just aren't considered for search unless explicitly requested. This stops everything from being dependent just because it could be found in a dependent base. It also has the undesirable effect that you're seeing - you have to qualify stuff from the base class or it's not found. There are three common ways to make A dependent:
using Bar<T>::A; in the class - A now refers to something in Bar<T>, hence dependent.
Bar<T>::A *x = 0; at point of use - Again, A is definitely in Bar<T>. This is multiplication since typename wasn't used, so possibly a bad example, but we'll have to wait until instantiation to find out whether operator*(Bar<T>::A, x) returns an rvalue. Who knows, maybe it does...
this->A; at point of use - A is a member, so if it's not in Foo, it must be in the base class, again the standard says this makes it dependent.
Two-phase compilation is fiddly and difficult, and introduces some surprising requirements for extra verbiage in your code. But rather like democracy it's probably the worst possible way of doing things, apart from all the others.
You could reasonably argue that in your example, return x; doesn't make sense if x is a nested type in the base class, so the language should (a) say that it's a dependent name and (2) treat it as a non-type, and your code would work without this->. To an extent you're the victim of collateral damage from the solution to a problem that doesn't apply in your case, but there's still the issue of your base class potentially introducing names under you that shadow globals, or not having names you thought they had, and a global being found instead.
You could also possibly argue that the default should be the opposite for dependent names (assume type unless somehow specified to be an object), or that the default should be more context sensitive (in std::string s = "";, std::string could be read as a type since nothing else makes grammatical sense, even though std::string *s = 0; is ambiguous). Again, I don't know quite how the rules were agreed. My guess is that the number of pages of text that would be required, mitigated against creating a lot of specific rules for which contexts take a type and which a non-type.

We can now ask why the standard mandates that but as Steve Jessop's excellent answer and others point out, the answer to this latter question is rather long and arguable. Unfortunately, when it comes to the C++ Standard, it is often nearly impossible to give a short and self-contained explanation as to why the standard mandates something; this applies to the latter question as well.
The x is hidden during the inheritance. You can unhide via:

Variable with same name as type - which compiler is right?

In this code:

all versions of clang -std=c++14 accept this code, however all versions of g++ -std=c++14 report:

Is the code correct?
The code is wrong. typedef is a new name for a existing type. So you can not create a variable with a type's name like foo foo; is equal to int int.
g++ -std=c++14 is the correct one.

According to the C++ standard, declaring a variable with the same name as a type is correct code in general, but invalid code within a class definition. The class case is specific, because names declared in a class definition are visible within the whole class definition, before and after the point of declaration of that name. In other scopes (global, namespace, function, ...) declared names are visible only after the point of declaration.
For the example given in the question: If you have another reference to foo before the member declaration foo foo;,
struct S { foo another_member; foo foo; };
to which foo should it refer? To the type or the member foo? In this case it would be possible to deduce from the context that the type is meant, but the C++ standard probably avoided complexity for treating corner cases.
But foo foo; is valid code outside of class definitions: Additionally to the excerpt from section [dcl.spec], which Serge Ballesta already citied in his answer, section [dcl.decl] is useful in this context. It gives a valid example for this case (in older versions of the C++ standard text in a note below the text, in later versions as part of the main text) - here from the N3242 draft (final draft for C++11):
A declaration with several declarators is usually equivalent to the corresponding sequence of declarations each with a single declarator. That is
T D1, D2, ... Dn;
is usually equvalent to
T D1; T D2; ... T Dn;
where T is a decl-specifier-seq and each Di is an init-declarator.
The exception occurs when a name introduced by one of the declarators
hides a type name used by the decl-specifiers, so that when the same
decl-specifiers are used in a subsequent declaration, they do not have
the same meaning, as in

which is not equivalent to

The excerpt from section [dcl.spec] is useful as well, as it describes, when a name in a declaration of a variable is interpreted as type name and when as the variable name (long quote is given in Serge Ballesta's answer):

The relevant section for the class' case, which is given in the original question, is [basic.scope.class]:
... A name N used in a class S shall refer to the same declaration in its context and when re-evaluated in

This means that the code of the original question is invalid, but the compiler does not need to give an error. So both clang and gcc behave correctly (according to the C++ standard).
I would say CLang is correct here - even if I would never use this.
C++ 14 draft N4296 says in 7.1 Specifiers [dcl.spec] 3
If a type-name is encountered while parsing a decl-specifier-seq, it is interpreted as part of the decl-specifier-
seq if and only if there is no previous type-specifier other than a cv-qualifier in the decl-specifier-seq. The
sequence shall be self-consistent as described below. [ Example:

Here, the declaration static Pc is ill-formed because no name was specified for the static variable of type Pc.
To get a variable called Pc, a type-specifier (other than const or volatile) has to be present to indicate that
the typedef-name Pc is the name being (re)declared, rather than being part of the decl-specifier sequence.
For another example,
void f(const Pc); // void f(char* const) (not const char*)
void g(const int Pc); // void g(const int)

Even if an example is not normative, it let think that for the writers of C++ specification, a variable can redeclare the name of a typedef.
But g++ is simply more conservative what looks more reasonable. If I ever see such a construct in production code, the programmer would soon learn not to do it again, even I the compiler accepted it...

Difference between 'struct' and 'typedef struct' in C++?

In C++, is there any difference between:
struct Foo { ... };
and:
typedef struct { ... } Foo;
In C++, there is only a subtle difference. It's a holdover from C, in which it makes a difference.
The C language standard (C89 §3.1.2.3, C99 §6.2.3, and C11 §6.2.3) mandates separate namespaces for different categories of identifiers, including tag identifiers (for struct/union/enum) and ordinary identifiers (for typedef and other identifiers).
If you just said:
struct Foo { ... };
Foo x;
you would get a compiler error, because Foo is only defined in the tag namespace.
You'd have to declare it as:
struct Foo x;
Any time you want to refer to a Foo, you'd always have to call it a struct Foo. This gets annoying fast, so you can add a typedef:
struct Foo { ... };
typedef struct Foo Foo;
Now struct Foo (in the tag namespace) and just plain Foo (in the ordinary identifier namespace) both refer to the same thing, and you can freely declare objects of type Foo without the struct keyword.
The construct:
typedef struct Foo { ... } Foo;
is just an abbreviation for the declaration and typedef.
Finally,
typedef struct { ... } Foo;
declares an anonymous structure and creates a typedef for it. Thus, with this construct, it doesn't have a name in the tag namespace, only a name in the typedef namespace. This means it also cannot be forward-declared. If you want to make a forward declaration, you have to give it a name in the tag namespace.
In C++, all struct/union/enum/class declarations act like they are implicitly typedef'ed, as long as the name is not hidden by another declaration with the same name. See Michael Burr's answer for the full details.
In this DDJ article, Dan Saks explains one small area where bugs can creep through if you do not typedef your structs (and classes!):

object, function, or enumerator name
hides the tag name. The program can
refer to the tag name only by using
the keyword class, struct, union, or
enum (as appropriate) in front of the
tag name. A type name consisting of
one of these keywords followed by a
tag is an elaborated-type-specifier.
For instance, struct status and enum
month are elaborated-type-specifiers.
Thus, a C program that contains both:
int status(); struct status;
behaves the same when compiled as C++.
The name status alone refers to the
function. The program can refer to the
type only by using the
elaborated-type-specifier struct
status.
So how does this allow bugs to creep
into programs? Consider the program in
Listing 1. This program defines a
class foo with a default constructor,
and a conversion operator that
converts a foo object to char const *.
The expression
p = foo();
in main should construct a foo object
and apply the conversion operator. The
subsequent output statement
cout << p << '\n';
should display class foo, but it
doesn't. It displays function foo.
This surprising result occurs because
the program includes header lib.h
shown in Listing 2. This header
defines a function also named foo. The
function name foo hides the class name
foo, so the reference to foo in main
refers to the function, not the class.
main can refer to the class only by
using an elaborated-type-specifier, as
in
p = class foo();
The way to avoid such confusion
throughout the program is to add the
following typedef for the class name
foo:
typedef class foo foo;
immediately before or after the class
definition. This typedef causes a
conflict between the type name foo and
the function name foo (from the
library) that will trigger a
compile-time error.
I know of no one who actually writes
these typedefs as a matter of course.
It requires a lot of discipline. Since
the incidence of errors such as the
one in Listing 1 is probably pretty
small, you many never run afoul of
this problem. But if an error in your
software might cause bodily injury,
then you should write the typedefs no
matter how unlikely the error.
I can't imagine why anyone would ever
want to hide a class name with a
function or object name in the same
scope as the class. The hiding rules
in C were a mistake, and they should
not have been extended to classes in
C++. Indeed, you can correct the
mistake, but it requires extra
programming discipline and effort that
should not be necessary.
One more important difference: typedefs cannot be forward declared. So for the typedef option you must #include the file containing the typedef, meaning everything that #includes your .h also includes that file whether it directly needs it or not, and so on. It can definitely impact your build times on larger projects.
Without the typedef, in some cases you can just add a forward declaration of struct Foo; at the top of your .h file, and only #include the struct definition in your .cpp file.
There is a difference, but subtle. Look at it this way: struct Foo introduces a new type. The second one creates an alias called Foo (and not a new type) for an unnamed struct type.
7.1.3 The typedef specifier

A name declared with the typedef specifier becomes a typedef-name. Within the scope of its declaration, a
typedef-name is syntactically equivalent to a keyword and names the type associated with the identifier in
the way described in Clause 8. A typedef-name is thus a synonym for another type. A typedef-name does not introduce a new type the way a class declaration (9.1) or enum declaration does.

So, a typedef always is used as an placeholder/synonym for another type.
You can't use forward declaration with the typedef struct.
The struct itself is an anonymous type, so you don't have an actual name to forward declare.

An important difference between a 'typedef struct' and a 'struct' in C++ is that inline member initialisation in 'typedef structs' will not work.
// the 'x' in this struct will NOT be initialised to zero
typedef struct { int x = 0; } Foo;
// the 'x' in this struct WILL be initialised to zero
struct Foo { int x = 0; };
There is no difference in C++, but I believe in C it would allow you to declare instances of the struct Foo without explicitly doing:
struct Foo bar;
Struct is to create a data type.
The typedef is to set a nickname for a data type.
