In my application I've added a "Facebook Comment Box" (on different pages, for different objects). Each object has its own comments list so I need to provide a unique (across the site) ID for every single one of them.
What would be the best approach for achieving this: An abstract model, from which all other models will inherit? A dummy model with a ForeignKey relation? What are your ideas?

... you can safely use them in URLs -- won't be pretty, but for comments and other things without obvious URL-able titles, GUIDs work out well.

I have a model that has a Charfield (let's name it advantages) with a choices attribute. After a while, I've decided that this field should be "upgraded" to some kind of ListField, since more than one choice can be selected.
From what I have searched, I have two options:
1 - Create a new model, and use a ManyToManyField in the first model referencing this new model. This way, the "multiple select" default field used in admin will be rendered. Life is good.
2- Create a custom field that saves my field as a string with some kind of separator.

Fact is: I don't want to create another model just to have the ManyToManyField. This is a controlled list of choices that I have (and don't want people adding new items) and think that creating a table for this is overkill (although I can create a fixture to this table and not register the model in admin.py, so people wouldn't be adding new items. But I don't know how would migrations work when changing these values in fixtures, when in the past I would just chance the choices tuple in my model definition).
...and creating a new custom field, I don't know. This seems like problems in the long run since I don't know the implications, problems when upgrading Django, etc.
Why there isn't a built in ListField? Which problems do you see in the long run for the two approaches I'm thinking of? I'm planning to do the first but I'm a little lost about migrations.
django.contrib.postgres has an ArrayField.
You seem to not be willing to create a new table with only the List inside (because it would be "overkill"), but what you are suggesting is to copy/paste the same exact values in all the entries of your table, which isn't a good model solution in my opinion.
I'd advise to go for the ManyToMany (or any other implementation doing the trick with another table).
Assume a Django application with a few models connected by one-to-many relationships:

Conceptually, they form a hierarchy, a tree-like structure. I want the Django admin to reflect that. In particular:
in a changelist of posts, every post should have a link to the changelist of corresponding comments;
similarly, a post’s edit page should link to the changelist of comments from the top-right buttons area;
when I open that list of related comments, it needs to reflect the relationship in the breadcrumbs (something like: Posts › “Hello world” › Comments) and, ideally, also in the URL (post/123/comment/).
This should of course also apply to the other levels of the hierarchy.
Number 1 is pretty easy with a custom list_display entry and using the ?post__id= query to the comments changelist. But this is little more than a hack. Generally Django assumes my three models to be independent, top-level entities.
Is there a straightforward way to accomplish this? I guess I could override a bunch of templates and AdminModel methods, but perhaps there is a better solution for what seems like a common situation?
Are you sure you are not just looking at Django Admin Inline Models ?
There is no way that an automated admin will pick up your relationships, because in an RDBS there can be any number of foreign keys / one to one / many to many relations, and Django does not have a customized hierarchical behavior built in.
You can indeed edit the breadcrumb customizing an admin template if you want.
For relations you might also be interested into django MPTT that allows to make hierarchical model instances. Also see this question: Creating efficient database queries for hierarchical models (django) in that respect.
How is this a common situation? Consider the fact a model can have a virtually unlimited number of foreign key relationships, let alone visa versa. How would the admin 'know' how to represent this data the way a user requires without customizing things?
One would suggest you are used to work with content management systems rather than webframeworks (no pun intended). It's important to notice Django isn't a cms, but a webframework you can built on top of as you see fit. In a nutshell: 'Django is rather clueless and unaware of contextual requirements'.
Although the admin is quite a beast out-of-the-box, it can be hard to customize. There have been quite some discussions whether it should even be part of core. I can only suggest, if customizing things tends to get hacky, you should probably write your own 'admin', it's not that hard.
Is it possible to have a model whose name consists of more than one word e.g. UserProfile and use it in OneToMany relationships with User, for instance, User.hasMany(UserProfile).

You simply have to snake case the relationShip ids in your fixtures, and I think this will work.
The second thing is to define an id for the users.
In fact, the structures defined in the fixtures must be like the JSON you will receive from the server.

I've worked on multiple sites recently with similar content types but haven't gotten the design I'm looking to achieve.
I have multiple types of content article, interview, video, gallery, blog, etc. All of these models have very similar properties (title, slug, body, pub_date, etc). And since I'm using django and the admin, almost all the admin setting are identical as well. Most will only have one or two additional fields (ie. filename for video, author for blog).
Currents options are
Using single model "Post/Article" and then just have a type_of_content field. This gives me a single model which makes searches easier and faster and its easy to maintain one model. Managers could be used to pull certain types of content.
Have models 'Video, Interview, Audio' subclass a model called "Post/Article". Gains flexibility of working with different models without all the redundacy. Lots of joins though and all the admin code is still duplicated.
Be very redundant and create a separate model for each type of content even though they share the majority of fields. More stuff to maintain, not DRY at all but highest level of flexibility.
Any insight from someone with more experience would be great.

I don't have that much experience with Django, but it sounds like what you want to do is subclass off of an Abstract Base Class. This avoids creating a table for the abstract parent class, so you get the advantage of your option #2 without the need for joins.
Hi everyone I have a few questions about the django admin.
First the relevant details. I currently have Client, Printer, Cartridge, and Order models.
The Printer model has a ManyToManyField to the Cartridge model, which would allow you to select all the cartridges that can be used with that printer.
The Cliente has a ManyToManyField to the printers which they own.
1) I want to create an Order through the Django admin which lets your specify the Client, a dicount, and multiple cartridges through a ManyToManyField. This is getting kinda tricky because I have to do it through another table that specifies whether it's a new Cartridge or a refill.
2) I want the admin to filters the Cartridges to only show the ones that belong to the printers that they own.
3) Also I would like to have a field that holds the total price of their order, but it should calculate it based on how many cartridges they have added to the order. I don't know if this should be done by adding more of the same cartridge to the order or by having another field in the related table that specifies the quantity.
Can this be done in the admin or do I need to use a form? And if so how would I go about adding this to the admin? It seems difficult and probably something I will have to do in multiple parts since in order to filter the list of cartridges I have to know the client beforehand.
As far as I can see, no, it's not really possible. The development version has some methods for limiting foreign keys, but it doesn't seem to me that limiting based on the customer is possible, since it depends on separate foreign keys.
The best suggestion, if you're really bent on doing it in the admin form, would be to use Javascript to do it. You would still have to make AJAX calls to get lists of what printers customers had and what cartridges to show based on that, but it could be done. You would just specify the JS files to load with the Media class.
But I think that's more work than it's worth. The easiest way I would see to do it would be with Form Wizards. That way, you'd have a step to select the customer so on the next step you know what cartridges to show.

I've worked similar problems, and have come to the conclusion that in many cases like this, it's really better to write your own administration interface using forms than it is to try and shoehorn functionality into the admin which is not intended to be there.
As far as 3) goes, it depends on what your product base looks like. If you're likely to have customers ordering 50 identical widgets, you probably do want a quantity field. If customers are more likely to be ordering 2 widgets, one in red, one in blue, add each item separately to the manytomany field and group them in your order interface.
