Pass array from HTML to Django application - django

I developed an application in JSPs and Servlets involving drop down menus that kept growing with how many authors per publication their were.
This was done in JavaScript and then in my application iterated through them using a loop. Is this possible using Django? This would be useful in my application.

In any case, you need to serialize your array to a JSON string.
Then pass the JSON with an XMLHTTPRequest (ajax) to the server.
Add the javascript tag to your question if you don't mind more JS solutions.
Otherwise look for a Django Ajax framework to do the heavy lifting for you.

Do we need to render templates when using ReactJS as a front-end?

So I just created a website's front-end using ReactJS. Now all I need is a backend database that I will fetch data from using requests.
The question is whether I need to render templates using my backend or just use my server to make requests (eg get, post etc)

Doing both is recommended. Based on the requirements and use cases we must use both ways to render.
For example, Some products use initial html as a Server side rendered page with all essential data required inserted as scripts and so on. This helps in loading primary content faster. If we are not following this in applications that require data initially. Then it might take more time to fetch React chunks, scripting and after seeing an API makes request, and then getting data and then displaying the primary content. So when a page needs more data (like More API calls) then server side rendering might be a good way.
For other scenarios like getting user details, All these can be done using React.
No, because you will use DRF (Django Rest Framework) to communicate between frontend and backend. Basically you will write your own APIs in the views.py that will respond with JSON data, at least in major of cases this will be enough. So, you don't need templates, since template are really Djangos' frontend, that you will not be using at all.
But, this heavily depends on what you are doing and what is your setup.

When to use Angular with Django?

I have a pretty basic question.
Consider a CRUD web application built on Django. You have templates that render data. Those templates might have forms where you submit data to the backend, and that might reload the page to display changes. Sometime, you can make those requests over AJAX, for example when you need to update data on the UI. You can also submit forms with AJAX and update the HTML with it.
On the other hand you have single page applications. You serve a static file, and there is no reload of pages. You have data that comes from an API and populates some front-end template.
What are some guidelines for when to use what? Not in a mutually exclusive way, but within one Django project, what are some reasons/considerations to use a Django template/forms/AJAX approach and when to use Angular?

Something to consider is how "interactive" you want the client-side to be.
I am in the process of converting an existing Django app to use Angular (and django-rest-framework). The app was highly interactive and relied on a lot of custom JQuery to get various widgets working just right. JQuery's constant looping through the DOM made it pretty slow. I am finding that using Angular instead of JQuery is much faster.
So if you have a lot of complexity in the front-end, I would recommend Angular.

What happens in a simple Django Rest Framework application that has an Angular front end?

I've been learning Django for some time now, and I found this image helpful:
I'm now delving into Angular JS, and I'm trying to figure out how each of the components (Directives, Controllers and Services ?) interacts and if there is a similar 'cycle'. This blog looks like it comes close to answering my question.
But how is the picture different if we have a Django-Rest-Framework end point providing the books in the above example?
Do we want URL resolution from Django, or Angular? Or more answerabley, which takes precedent?
What is the general order that things happen in when we go to say localhost:8000/books ?
Does urls.py catch this?

If so what does that function (angular_redirect) need to render to get angular to respond?
Does angular routing catch this?

So does this mean my controller then registers a service hooked up to say localhost:8000:/book_list.json and does that need to be registered in the urls.py?
How does Angular know where to get the DRF JSON, if we're wholly relying on angular for routing. I've seen this package that lets you use the django models in the angular JS, but I'm not certain if that makes the picture more or less complicated.
Apologies if this is overly broad, I'm very new and trying to get my head round some of the general concepts of these technologies. Any advice on narrowing this question so it's answerable would be appreciated.
Your question has a simple answer: Angular handles the front end and Django (and DRF) handles the back end, and that includes URLs. Users on a fully Angular-powered site should never directly hit a URL that is served by Django, except possibly for the initial page that serves the page structure and JS itself.
Apart from that, the only interaction between the two is when Angular specifically requests JSON from Django, via an Ajax call. That may well be in relation to a navigation event by the user, but just as equally could be triggered on a timed basis or via some kind of websocket functionality.

How to prevent Django pages from refreshing after submit?

I am using the Django template system. What I want is, when I submit a form, or click to an url link, page does not refreshes, but loads with the data returning from the server. Is it possible?
I recommend a combination of jQuery (easy, powerful, popular javascript library) and dajax/dajaxice (http://www.dajaxproject.com/). Dajax is very easy to set up and use, and jQuery is also easy to set up and use. Dajax is strictly for AJAX communications through Django. jQuery is perfect for taking a simple site and making it more fluid, intuitive, and user-friendly.
You need JavaScript to do that. What you are looking for is called AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML). Essentially, it means you use JavaScript to send a request to the server as soon as the link/button is clicked. The server returns some data to your Script, which then can be used to manipulate the HTML page, e.g. by inserting the responded data into the DOM. Since you do everything with JavaScript, no reloading of the whole page is required.
To start, read the AJAX tutorial. There are certain JavaScript libraries that make these things more simple for you (e.g. jQuery), but you really should understand how this stuff works first, since else you might get into trubble while trying to debug it.

Plone-like search box in Django?

Plone has a beautiful search box with a "Google suggest" like functionality for its site. It even indexes uploaded documents like PDFs. Does anyone know of a module that can provide this kind of functionality in a Django site?
Plone implements it's LiveSearch feature by maintaining a separate metadata table of indexed attributes (fields such as last modified, creator, title are copied from the content objects into this table). Content objects then send ObjectAdded/ObjectModified/ObjectRemoved events, and an event subscriber listens for these events and is responsible for updating the metadata table (in Django events are named signals). Then there is a Browser View exposed at a fixed URL that searches the metadata and returns the appropriate LiveSearch HTML, and finally each HTML page is sent the appropriate JavaScript to handle the autocomplete AJAX functionality to query this view and slot the resulting HTML results into the DOM.
If you want your LiveSearch to query multiple Models/Content Types, you are likely going to need to send your own events and have a subscriber handle them appropriately. This isn't necessary for a smaller data sets or lower traffic sites, where the performance penalty for doing multiple queries for a single search isn't a concern (or you only want to search a single content type) and you can just do several queries from your View.
As for the JavaScript side, you can roll-your-own or use an existing JavaScript library. This is usually called autocomplete in the JS library. There is YUI autocomplete and Scriptaculous autocomplete for starters, and likely lots more JavaScript autocomplete implementations out there. Plone uses KSS for it's JavaScript library, the KSS livesearch plugin is a good place to start if looking for example code to pluck from.
