MFC without document/view architecture - c++

I'd like some help on using MFC without the document/view architecture.
I created a project without doc/view support, Visual C++ created a CFrameWnd and a view that inherits from CWnd. I replaced the view inheriting from CWnd with a new view that inherits from CFormView.
However, when I run my program, after I close the window I get a heap corruption error.

If inside where the frame window handles WM_CREATE, you change the code to create the instance of CFormView with the "magic" id of AFX_IDW_PANE_FIRST, you'll find it becomes the view for the frame window. This is due to the behaviour of CFrameWnd::InitialUpdateFrame(), which will be called from within MFC. The MSDN page comments on this helpful little feature:

Since you want to use the dialog editor and you don't want the document/view architecture, then maybe a "Dialog based" application is what you need.

The problem is MFC's lifecycle management. The view declaration (created by Visual C++ wizard) is:
CChildView m_wndView;
I replaced the above code with:
CChildFormView m_wndView;
CChildView inherits from CWnd, CChildFormView inherits from CFormView. Both views were created by the wizard, but only CChildFormView uses the DECLARE_DYNCREATE/IMPLEMENT_DYNCREATE macros.
Since m_wndView is being created in the stack, when MFC automagically calls delete I get the error.

Possible to Superclass a Dialog Box in Win32?

I'm using raw Win32 and C++ for a project. As I understand it, I am able to superclass Windows controls by retrieving the class information, replacing the procedure, then registering this as a new class and using it when creating a new window. Subclassing is done by replacing the window's procedure after the window is created. The advantage of superclassing is that you are able to process messages before CreateWindow() returns.
I'm looking to see if it's possible to superclass a dialog box created with CreateDialog() because I'd like to use a resource file for the dialog layout. The problem is that I don't know how I would provide my superclass when I create a dialog box. Is it even possible? Any idea how MFC handles this?
If you use an extended dialog box template to create your dialog, you can specify a custom window class as part of the DLGTEMPLATEEX definition.
The dialog manager will create and layout your dialog as normal, and call your window procedure for any dialog messages. You can use the DefDlgProc function to obtain default processing for any dialog messages you don't want to handle yourself.

How to use MFC ListCtrl in SDI

I am really a beginner with MFC. I just want a few guidelines on how to use a ListCtrl in an SDI application. For example, getting input from the user and displaying it in the listctrl when a button is clicked. Please guide me.
In SDI application I would use CListView-derived class for main view. This class has been designed to be used in SDI/MDI apps and supports standard MFC document-view architecture. The CListView class internally uses CListCtrl, but it does automatic resizing and other handy things, you can also get direct access to embedded list ctrl by calling CListView::GetListCtrl() method that returns CListCtrl*.

Creating a DialogBar with MFC with my own controls

I'm turning mad with a little problem with Visual Studio 2008 and MFC. I'm working on a project actually and I'm trying to create an SDI Application. Right, now I want to add a dockable DialogBar. Well, the first time I added it with the resource view, I could create the bar without problems.
But... I want to add some controls like a couple of ListBox, buttons and so on. The program doesn't allows me to create member variables for these controls. The option appears in grey.
Searching a little, I found that it's mandatory to create a new class derived from CDialogBar and "enhance" it with the Message handler and so on. I've been reading some tutorials and it didn't work for me.
Can you please help me? I'm starting to get nervous, the use of dialogbars is mandatory in my design and I've never implemented them before.

You can add a control member variable by hand instead of using the wizard. All it takes is a call to DDX_Control in the dialog bar's DoDataExchange function.
But CDialogBar-derived classes do not handle control clicks. The CDialogBar class forwards all of those messages to the dialog bar's parent window. So be prepared to add the message handlers to the parent (usually CMainFrame).
For learning purposes you might try creating your dialog bar as a CDialog first, to see the proper code lines and message map entries supplied by the wizard. Then you can copy/move these details as appropriate into your actual code project.

Convert simple MFC CView/CDocument/CSingleDocTemplate app to ActiveX control

I have a fairly simple MFC app that just defines its own sub-classes of CDocument, CView and CFrameWnd and uses them via a CSingleDocTemplate to display the read-only contents of the document in a tree on the view. All very standard MFC MVC.
I now need to convert this app so that it works as an ActiveX control that I can then embed it within a larger application.
How should I go about this?
Is it possible to use the COleControl sub-class in place of the CFrameWnd sub-class in the CSingleDocTemplate? Or do I need to place the CFrameWnd sub-class within the COleControl some how?
Failing that, how can I use my existing CDocument\CView sub-classes within an ActiveX control?
Answering my own question: I found quite a few references to an old article about this, which used to be at http://www.microsoft.com/mind/0497/mfc.asp but has long since disappeared. :(
Fortunately though, the Wayback Machine still has a complete copy of it:

Steve presents source code for two new classes:
CActiveXDocTemplate : a sub-class of CSingleDocTemplate
CActiveXDocControl : a sub-class of COleControl
which allowed me to use my existing CView and CDocument sub-classes in an ActiveX control.

How to create and add a custom made component to a Dialog based app (MFC)?

I want to make a custom made component (a line chart), that would be used in other applications.
I don't know 2 things:
Where should I use (within component class!) the methods for drawing, like FillRect
or PolyLine? In OnPaint handler that I should define and map it in MESSAGE MAP? Will
it (OnPaint handler) be called from OnPaint handler of the dialog of the application
or where from?
How to connect the component, once it is made, to the test application, which will
for example be dialog based? Where should I instantiate that component? From an
OnCreate method of the MyAppDialog.cpp?
I started coding in MFC few days ago and I'm so confused about it.

Painting the control is handled exactly like it would be if it wasn't a control. Given that you're using MFC, that (at least normally) means you do the drawing in the View class' OnDraw (MFC normally handles OnPaint internally, so you rarely touch it).
Inserting the resulting ActiveX control in the host application will be done like inserting any other ActiveX control. Assuming you're doing your development in Visual Studio, you'll normally do that by opening the dialog, right clicking inside the dialog box, and clicking "Insert ActiveX Control..." in the menu that pops up. Pick your control from the list, and it'll generate a wrapper class for the control and code to create an object of that class as needed. From the viewpoint of the dialog code, it's just there, and you can use it about like any other control.
For create new component in MFC, you must create a class from the window class (CWND),
after that you can have your MessageMap for the component and your methods and also can override CWND::OnDraw method to draw the thing you want.
