Visual Studio resource editor: there can only be one string table? - c++

I created a string table in my .rc file containing my English strings - now I need to add another string table for a different language.
If I try to do:
Add Resource... -> String Table -> New
I get the error: "there cannot be more than one instance of this type".
I know I can open up the .rc file in notepad and add language in there but how am I suppose to do this from inside Visual Studio?

Yes, it is very well hidden. Double-click the .rc file in Solution Explorer to open the Resource View window. Expand the String Table node, right-click "String Table" and select "Insert Copy". That takes you to the language selection combo.

As nobugz mentioned, you can only have one string table per language.
But back to the bigger picture: is is considered a bad practice to store several languages in one executable/dll. The "best current practice" is to have resource-only dlls, one per language. Then you have full control on what language is loaded (otherwise you let Windows do the decision for you).

In the end, there can be only one. (sorry, I couldn't resist).
It will let you add a table if it isn't the same language as the current table,
Try changing the language on your current string table to something else "Basque" maybe, then add the new table, then change it back.

Create a new resource file and add new string table with the same language.
I hope it will work ...I tried it..!!!

Best way to go here is to copy paste the whole text into the text editor and chose the option replace all with the following line (for this example):

If it is not working you have to inspect the lines of codes. Maybe you find the missing piece.

SAS - Create new libraries nested inside WORK

tl;dr: Can SAS libraries be nested within one another in the Enhanced Editor Explorer?
I am working with code which generates a plethora of data sets. Although there are many individual data sets, they can be grouped into various categories. For instance, perhaps 30 of them are incoming "raw" data, another 50 are analysis "results" and the remaining 20 are "intermediate" steps.
Currently, all 100 data sets reside in the Work directory. They have been well named so that they appear next to one another in the SAS Explorer window. However, I would prefer to organize them in folders.
One way to do this is to create new directories within the temporary Work folder.

As sub-directories of Work, these directories and their contents will be deleted when the session ends. This is agreeable.
Not agreeable is how the raw, iterm, and results libraries appear one level up in 'Active Libraries' instead of within the 'Contents of "Work"'. This behavior is somewhat counter-intuitive and awkward.
Is there a way to view the sub-folders of Work within the 'Contents
of "Work"' in the SAS Explorer?
Perhaps there's another way to separate the data sets (DCREATE?) which causes the Explorer window to behave like a typical file browser?
Libraries can contain many things.. But not other libraries. Your 'Active Libraries' will always show your (available) list of libraries at the same level, regardless of where or how they were defined:
One option if you'd like to view your datasets like a typical file browser is to use the Explorer window. Just click View / Explorer, and navigate to your datasets that way..

SAS librefs are just single words, so by definition there is no heirarchy. You could try using librefs that will place them next to each other alphabetically? Perhaps WORKIN, WORKMID, WORKOUT. Then they would sort in logical order.
You could use a file explorer to browse the directory structure you have created, but I don't think the SAS Explorer tool in SAS Display Manager can handle that.
DMS does have a file explorer tool you could try. You can start directly on your current WORK directory by running this command from the command line of any window, or via the DM statement in a program.

There appears to be no ideal solution. The best I could devise requires the use of two part names, a non-trivial amount of extra code, a custom setup, and is potentially confusing to other programmers. The easiest configuration appears to be the default behavior: simply dumping all data sets in the Work library and sifting through all of them.
For prosperity, here is the best solution I could devise to organize things.
Understanding the Display Manager and Explorer Window
The Display Manager (DM) controls the various windows in the Enhanced Editor. This includes windows such as log, results, pgm, output and explorer. It is the latter which is of principle interest here.
A user may configure windows per session using the menus. There exist, however, a set of commands which may be used to automatically configure the DM for each session. When used with the AUTOEXEC.sas facility, this allows the user to 'permanently' configure the SAS editor to their preferences.
The default explorer view for the Enhanced Editor is the "Contents of 'SAS Environment'".
When the explorer window is selected, a tree hierarchy view can be toggled. There are several ways to do this. Here is one way:

Having to do this every time SAS is opened becomes a pain. After we clean up the library tree, we will automate this.
Remove any extraneous libraries
SAS loads a variety of libraries by default. These include WORK, SASHELP, and SASUSER, as well as others that are part of non-base products. In my case, the MAPS, MAPSGFK, and MAPSSAS libraries are also loaded (see above picture). As I never have used these (and likely never will), they only serve to clutter up my library directory. To remove these, one can edit their config file.
SAS implements a whole web of config files. On a Windows system, the likely relevant sasv9.cfg file is located here:
C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASFoundation\9.4\nls\en
You will need admin rights to edit it. Disregarding the DO NOT EDIT BELOW THIS LINE warning, comment out the the following using PL/I style comments.

Now when SAS opens, the MAPS, MAPSGFK, and MAPSSAS library will not be automatically loaded. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way to disable the loading of the SASUSER and SASHELP libraries. If someone knows how, please let me know!
Configure the Explorer Window
The explorer window can be 'configured' using the DM statement and the AUTOEXEC.sas facility.
Navigate to the directory containing SAS.EXE. On a default Windows installation, it is located here:
C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASFoundation\9.4
Create a SAS program named AUTOEXEC.sas containing the following code and place it in the directory which contains SAS.EXE. This step requires admin privileges. I find it easiest to create the file in a non-privileged environment and simply copy the AUTOEXEC.sas program into the directory.
Include this in the AUTOEXEC.sas program:
dm 'dmsexp; tree; expand libraries; expand work;';
When SAS intializes, the AUTOEXEC.sas code is executed before any user input is accepted. The above code does the following:
dmsexp - Brings the explorer window into command focus.
tree - Toggles the tree hierarchy view.
expand libraries - Within the "Active Libraries" pane, drills down into Libraries.
expand work - Within the "Active Libraries" pane, drills down into the Work library.
Each of these is a separate command and could be issued on separate lines. Instead of this, semi-colons are used to issue them in a single line.
Now when SAS is opened, the tree menu is available and the contents of the Work library are viewed. The picture below is somewhat deceiving. The "SAS Environment" pane is not set to a convenient width as pictured. It must be manually adjusted. If anyone has a way to automate this, please let me know!
Storing data sets in sub-folders
To ensure that data sets are deleted when the SAS session ends, sub-folders needs to be created within the temporary system folder where the Work library points to.
The following structure can now be followed:

Now, all the raw data sets can be assigned to the raw library. Within SAS, they will be logically separated from Work. That is, if the data set foobar is created in the raw library, it can only be accessed via raw.foobar. A statement such as data = foobar or data = work.foobar will not work. Yet because the raw library is in fact a sub-folder of Work, it will be deleted when the SAS session is ended.

How do I display a field name containing the substring OMIT in ApEx?

One of the fields in my database table is named DATEOFDISCHARGEFROMITU. In any report output, this displays as DATEOFDISCHARGEFRU. I've figured out that the missing characters form the word 'OMIT', which makes me think it's related to this old problem in a previous version of ApEx (I'm using version 4.1.)
Is there a way to display the whole field name in the report header when the field name contains the string 'OMIT'?
Note: Using html character codes will allow the field name to display properly, but then when the report is exported to CSV the character codes are of course shown instead of the full field name. I need a solution that works for exports as well as displaying onscreen.

Note: I am not sure how the linked OTN post is relevant to your problem aside from the coincidence that their file export contains the word "OMIT" and your column title contains the word "OMIT".
It's safe to say that "OMIT" isn't an APEX or ORACLE reserved word that is sabotaging your output. However, if you were talking about a scrap of SQL that attempted to create a table named "SELECT" or "WHERE"
i.e., SELECT * FROM "SELECT" WHERE...
you'll be blocked by the RDBMS from proceeding. :)
I tried an export with a query that contained a column header labeled "OMIT" (see the far right in the example.) The .csv file interpreted by Microsoft Excel looked like this:

In summary, the linked post suggests to set up a dynamic PL/SQL Function within a page item. The page item can be referenced directly in the report column header definition. This is a screenshot demonstrating a possible solution:

I solved this by using this solution for exporting to csv without an enclosing quote character - as that was another challenge I was faced with for the particular application I was developing. By manually creating the export file I was also able to define the column headings exactly, and the "OMIT" issue did not occur.
Technically that's not a solution for displaying a report with the required headings that can also be exported (Richard's response does that) but it does what I need it to and solves the immediate problem of the DATEOFDISCHARGEFROMITU column heading.

Multi language website, how to approach this?

I have a website (Coldfusion) on which I want to offer multi language, but no idea what is the best way to do this.
There 2 plans I have:
1:
Of course all content (text) is in a database.
If a user would want a different language, the user would click on a link/flag, this would put the requested language in a session variable, for example: session.language = "es"
In the database I would have 2 columns (every language has 1 column) and then select the text which belongs to 'es'
Every page would then do a request to the database to get the text beloging to the session.language.
PROS: Relatively simple to implement
CONS: SEO wise I don't think this could be very good. http:// www.domain.com/page.cfm would give an english text or spanish text (or other language). Google will not add duplicate URL's
2:
Do something with http:// www.domain.com/en/page.cfm for english and http:// www.domain.com/es/page.cfm for english.
With a URL rewrite rule the language value in the URL http:// www.domain.com/en/page.cfm would actually be a page http:// www.domain.com/page.cfm?language=en
The url.language variable will then select the correct language from the database.
PROS: Unique URL for each language. Good for SEO and Google indexing.
CONS: A bit more difficult to implement. (I think)

You should always first check the browser header "Accept-Language" for the default language(s) (the correct standard way to do it), and offer links (the intuitively seemingly right way) only as an alternative.
Doing it in a database doesn't seem very standard. Let's assume you would like to use MVC architecture (model-view-controller). Most software uses keys in the presentation layer (view) (eg. html) and along with the presentation layer, you have language files (in Java, this is typically properties files) which are mapped simply by their filenames, and can be modified by regular users, without any special skills, such as professional translators with no computer skills. Certainly you could put it in a database, but then it is just more work, and moves the information out of the presentation layer.
There are various libraries for doing this. You should find the normal one for your application. Please edit your question to include what you are using to develop the application. (eg. JSP, Tapestry, Wicket, ASP, PHP, etc.) So for example, if you wanted to use JSPs, I would then suggest you use the JSTL tag library's language support. Or if you were using Tapestry, I would point you to http://tapestry.apache.org/localization.html or http://tapestry.apache.org/tapestry4.1/UsersGuide/localization.html
To look it up, you can look for the terms "internationalization" aka "i18n", or "localization". (The terms don't mean the same thing, but few use them correctly, so either works. http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-i18n)
I would go for option 2. Every translation should have its own url. Links to your website will already be in the intended translation.
To store translations in a database, I wouldn't put every translation in a seperate column, but rather put them in a seperate table:
Table Posts:
- id
- title_id
- ...
Table Translations:
- label_id
- value
- country_code
- language_code
Where title_id matches label_id
This way you won't have to alter your table structure when a new translation is added. This allows you to have infinite translations for any label or text.
To effectively do a multi-lingual site then you need set a rule for yourself that NO TEXT is ever put in the source as hard coded. It either needs to come from the database and / or a Resource Bundle.
Text from the database
You need to make sure that the column you are storing your data in is unicode otherwise you'll have issues with accented character. Also don't have a column per language as this is not scalable, do what #jan suggests and have a translations table where the items are keyed on a reference as well as a language.
Resource bundles
You are not going to want to get every last little bit of text from the database so for those you can utilise a resource bundle. To be honest his blog is an excellent resource on this very subject.
With regards to how you handle the URLs do not do option 1 as you quite rightly identified you will cause issues the SEO rankings of the page and it will mean that users cannot correctly share or return to the page.
Two approaches are having the language code in the URL as you identified in option 1.

http://i18n.riaforge.org/ has a download for i18n. It can be used to make sure that all string labels match. That way if some one wants to change "Save" to "Update", it can all be done in one spot.
It is also important to consider the technical background of those that will being doing the translation. It is often easier to get the translation team to edit files in notepad as opposed to updating a db. Text files work well with version control.
The best way i found is to use an XML to hold just that pages language stuff, one xml to cover each page, and you then vary it for language. when the page loads, just load a different XML from the database or files... many ways to do this. all other methods i have tried have their issues, and at least this one allows you to take a language XML, hand it to someone who will copy it, and then change the boxes... you put it in the DB to serve it.
one can also do this for text, and have the DB make the XML for just the text for that page by using a list of items to include in the XML for the page.
once you get the idea, the rest becomes very easy...
and given CF ways of accessing such data with dot notation, easy peasy to us
say you have "Load Images"
in english xml it may be <LoadIMGS>Load Images</LoadIMGS>
in chinese it may be <LoadIMGS>加载图像</LoadIMGS>
or <LoadIMGS>Jiā zǎi túxiàng</LoadIMGS>
regardless, in your CFM code you would just put #variablename.LoadIMGS# in the place... i would also suggest putting in the loadimages tag the size the font should be adjusted to if not normal size. that way, when translations are too large, you can shrink that font there for that... etc.

Setting filters in the Open File dialog box with a wild card(*) in the middle in C

I'm trying to set up a filter for the OpenFile dialog box which has both the prefix and file type already preset, with the wild card in the middle. (Using VS08, cpp)

FileDialog = new CFileDialog(...);
The problem is that the Prefix_*.gdd filter isn't showing any files even though there is one present.
The filter works for an Explorer search - should it work here?
I found the mistake. The 'Prefix_' string, which was programatically generated, had the classic confusion between date and data, so the data files with date in their file names weren't found, leaving the OpenFile dialog empty.
It now appears to work properly.
