I've the following pbix file https://1drv.ms/u/s!Amd7BXzYs7AVk3D5iDMIrhfnpQNW?e=lHWRuH
The data model is simple
one fact related to date table and field parameter table
I need to create a dynamic column names, concatenate the month periode selected by the field parameter
I do it manually, I duplicate the same script for months june and march and I should do the same for all months
Parameter = {
("Month Name June-2022", NAMEOF('DimDate'[Month Name]), 0,"June-2022","Month Name"),
("sales.Reason June-2022", NAMEOF('FactSales'[sales.Reason]), 1,"June-2022","sales.Reason"),
("Customer.Email March-2022", NAMEOF('FactSales'[Customer.Email]), 2,"June-2022","Customer.Email"), ("Month Name May-2022", NAMEOF('DimDate'[Month Name]), 0,"March-2022","Month Name"),
("sales.Reason March-2022", NAMEOF('FactSales'[sales.Reason]), 1,"March-2022","sales.Reason"),
("Customer.Email March-2022", NAMEOF('FactSales'[Customer.Email]), 2,"March-2022","Customer.Email")
}
Is there a way to do it dynamically please?

I have a table ORDERS which contains column ORDER_DATE. I have created a Chart as a Bar type. I want the chart to show the amount of orders in a given date or range.
I'm following this Youtube tutorial which shows how to create a datepicker that returns a range in a Report. I'm trying to replicate this in a chart.
What I've done so far
Created datepicker items P5_DATE_FROM and P5_DATE_TO
Changed the Series Source Type to SQL Query
select ORDER_ID,
ORDER_NUMBER,
TO_CHAR(ORDER_DATE, 'YYYY-MM-DD') AS ORDERDATE,
STORE_ID,
FULL_NAME,
EMAIL,
CITY,
STATE,
ZIP_CODE,
CREDIT_CARD,
ORDER_ITEMS,
APEX$SYNC_STEP_STATIC_ID,
APEX$ROW_SYNC_TIMESTAMP
from ORDERS_LOCAL
where TO_CHAR(ORDER_DATE, 'YYYY-MM-DD') between :P5_DATE_FROM and :P5_DATE_TO
Source Page Items to Submit added P5_DATE_FROM,P5_DATE_TO
I basically followed the exact steps of the video. However, since the video is for a report and mine is for a chart, the chart isn't actually returning any data.
I think this is because for charts there are additional fields I need to configure. I noticed the video didn't cover Column Mapping and I'm a bit confused to what to enter here.
----------------UPDATE-------------
I've followed Koen's instructions from his answer. It seems like to TO_CHAR function was causing the error. I've updated the SQL Query to below:
select ORDER_ID,
ORDER_NUMBER,
ORDER_DATE,
STORE_ID,
FULL_NAME,
EMAIL,
CITY,
STATE,
ZIP_CODE,
CREDIT_CARD,
ORDER_ITEMS,
APEX$SYNC_STEP_STATIC_ID,
APEX$ROW_SYNC_TIMESTAMP
from ORDERS_LOCAL
where ORDER_DATE between TO_DATE(:P5_DATE_FROM,'YYYY-MM-DD') and TO_DATE(:P5_DATE_TO,'YYYY-MM-DD')
However, on the Page Designer I cannot save and run page until I select Column Mapping - Label and Value. I've set the Label as ORDER_DATE but I am unsure of what to select for the Value.
Setting the Value to ORDER_DATE shows an error Ajax call returned server error ORA-01403: no data found for CHART Count Orders by Date.
and selecting any other Value such as ORDER_NUMBER or ZIP_CODE populates the chart with the actual integer value of the column (ex: ZIP_CODE returns a chart of x-axis: date, y-axis: actual zip code numbers)
I see 2 possible issues.
You submit P5_DATE_FROM and P5_DATE_TO but the source has P1_DATE_FROM and P1_DATE_TO - not sure that is a typo but it should all be the same...
The where clause is wrong. This
from ORDERS_LOCAL
where TO_CHAR(ORDER_DATE, 'MM-DD-YYYY') between :P1_DATE_FROM and :P1_DATE_TO
should be
from ORDERS_LOCAL
where ORDER_DATE between TO_DATE(:P1_DATE_FROM,'MM-DD-YYYY') and TO_DATE(:P1_DATE_TO,'MM-DD-YYYY')
Reason: the column orders_local.order_date is of datatype DATE. If you convert it to a string using TO_CHAR then it will be a string comparison, not a date comparison.
Note that bind variables P1_DATE_FROM and P1_DATE_TO are strings - they're defined in the DOM on the html page and that has no concept of oracle datatypes so everything is just a string. If they're used as such in a date comparison, you're relying on implicit conversion by the database. It's safer to do explicit conversion using the TO_DATE function.
--UPDATE--
Your question starts with "I want the chart to show the amount of orders in a given date or range.". Well... there is your answer. The "Value" is the amount of orders on each day. Update your source query to include a count of the orders and group by day. Then make your value attribute the column that has the count.
This question is a follow up to another SO question
I want a bar chart to show the amount of orders in a given date or range. Koen's updated answer shows:
'The "Value" is the amount of orders on each day. Update your source query to include a count of the orders and group by day. Then make your value attribute the column that has the count.'
How would I go about doing this?

Per Koen's answer, I've updated the Source SQL Query to below but I am now receiving an error.
And if I copy the exact query that Koen suggested, I run into below:
I did some messing around and found if I include APEX$SYNC_STEP_STATIC_ID and APEX$ROW_SYNC_TIMESTAMP the missing expression error goes away but instead I receive the GROUP BY error.
Something like this (untested) should work. Use TRUNC to ensure all orders on the same date are grouped (since date has a time portion, you'd have a different column for each different date time. Use ORDER_DATE as label and ORDER_COUNT as value.
select COUNT(ORDER_ID) AS ORDER_COUNT,
TRUNC(ORDER_DATE) AS ORDER_DATE,
from ORDERS_LOCAL
where ORDER_DATE between TO_DATE(:P5_DATE_FROM,'YYYY-MM-DD') and TO_DATE(:P5_DATE_TO,'YYYY-MM-DD')
GROUP BY TRUNC(ORDER_DATE)
I am stuck while dynamically forming a new column based certain WHERE clause from another Table in PowerBi. To give more details, let's say I have a table with item numbers associated with a Customer Name. In another table, I have to add a new column, which will dynamically add the item numbers associated with a particular customer and append as a query parameter to a base url.
So, my first table looks like this:
The second table that I want is this:
The query parameter value in the URL, has to be dynamically based on a SELECT query with a WHERE clause and pick up the ItemNumbers using the Customer field which is common between both. So, how can this be done in PowerBi? Any help would be really appreciated :)
I have one table in my model "TableRol" if I want to summarize my Date as the string I can use CONCATENATEX;
URL = CONCATENATE(CONCATENATE("http:\\mysite.com\parametersHere\getitem?='",CONCATENATEX(VALUES('TableRol'[Date]), 'TableRol'[Date],";")),"'")
I have a table that's generated when I pull data from an accounting software - the example columns are months/years in the format as follows (It pulls all the way to current day, and the last month will be partial month data):
Nov_2020
Dec_2020
Jan_2021
Feb_1_10_2021 (Current month, column to remove)
... So on and so forth.
My goal I have been trying to figure out is how to use the power query editor to remove the last column (The partial month) - I tried messing around with the text length to no avail (The goal being to remove anything with text length >8, so the full months data would show but the last month shouldn't). I can't just remove based on a text filter, because if someone were to pull the data 1 year from now it would have to account for 2021/2022.
Is this possible to do in PQ? Sorry, I'm new to it so if I need to elaborate more I can.. Thanks!
You can do this with Table.SelectColumns where you use List.Select on the Table.ColumnNames.
= Table.SelectColumns(
PrevStep,
List.Select(Table.ColumnNames(PrevStep), each Text.Length(_) <= 8)
)
Although both Alexis Olson's and Justyna MK's answers are valid, there is another approach. Since it appears that you're getting data for each month in a separate column, what you will surely want to do is unpivot your data, that is transform those columns into rows. It's the only sensible way to get a good material for analysis, therefore, I would suggest to unpivot the columns first, then simply filter out rows containing the last month.
To make it dynamic, I would use unpivot other columns option - you select columns and it will transform remaining columns into row in such a way that two columns will be created - one that will contain column names in rows and the other one will contain values.
To illustrate what I mean by unpivoting, when you have data like this:
You're automatically transforming that into this:
You can try to do it through Power Query's Advanced Editor. Assign the name of the last column to LastColumn variable and then use it in the last step (Removed Columns).
let
Source = Excel.Workbook(File.Contents(Excel file path), null, true),
tblPQ_Table = Source{[Item="tblPQ",Kind="Table"]}[Data],
#"Changed Type" = Table.TransformColumnTypes(tblPQ_Table,{{"Nov_2020", Int64.Type}, {"Dec_2020", Int64.Type}, {"Jan_2021", Int64.Type}, {"Feb_1_10_2021", Int64.Type}}),
LastColumn = List.Last(Table.ColumnNames(#"Changed Type")),
#"Removed Columns" = Table.RemoveColumns(#"Changed Type",{LastColumn})
in
#"Removed Columns"
I have a table visual in PowerBI that summarizes work hours by employee. The first column shows the employee name.
When training managers on how to use it I want to anonymize by showing employee numbers instead of names.
I tried adding a what-if parameter Anonymous with values 0 and 1 and use IF() in the DAX of a calculated column but it is not working. It ignores the parameter value.
Person = IF(Anonym[Anonym value] = 0; Time[Name]; Time[Empno])
will always show Name.
Person = IF(Anonym[Anonym value] = 1; Time[Name]; Time[Empno])
will always show Empno.
Another option if you really need to use a column and needs it to be "dynamic" is to use a PowerQuery parameter and add a new column based on it and then create your conditional. The downside of this is that you will have to refresh your query everytime you want to change the parameter
