i have installed two extensions
Bundler & Minifier
Sitecore Rocks
using extensions and updates in VS2017.
both were installed but i unable to find the icon or name in the tab in VS.
when i check in extensions and updates: both are in installed.
but not affected in visual studio
Any help ?
Can you please try the following:
1)Shutdown all VS instances
2)Backup and then delete the c:\users[username]\AppData\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_[hashid]\1033\devenv.ctm (note this file is hidden)
3)Restart VS
I found the solution
uninstall Rocks
delete C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_c2d19173\privateregistry.bin and privateregistry.user.bin file (please backup them first)
reinstall Rocks
start Visual Studio and problem should be solved

Edit: After wait too long, I have resorted to do a clean install of Windows 7.
It solves everything.
I believe the cause is : some Windows files, or some service are disabled, by me or virus.
Now, I can no longer test any solution so I accept the existing useful one.

My Visual Studio 2017 can run & compile C++ code, but :-
(main problem) can't install any Extension (double click .vsix yield nothing)
double click .sln will popup "Choose Application" that shows no choice. (but "Open with..." works OK)
This issue happens only to my computer in workplace.
It had worked OK before I cleaned up my system.
I tried :-
install, uninstall and repair Visual Studio 2017 several times.

I believe the issue is related to Microsoft Visual Studio Version Selector.
This symptom might come after I uninstall VS2019.
My system might be broken?
Perhaps, the cause may be somethings very deep in OS. I am considering reinstall Windows 7.

To install extensions, try to find VSIXInstaller.exe on your disk. Normally it is installed here:
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\Common7\IDE\VSIXInstaller.exe
I cannot see AnkhSVN as an option under "Tools - Options - Source Control" in Visual Studio 2017. I have uninstalled and reinstalled AnkhSVN, but no effect.
Is there a way to fix this?
I came here looking for an answer to the same question. I am Running Windows 10 Enterprise and had VS2015 with AnkhSVN working before and after installing VS2017, but in VS2017 AnkhSVN was not available under SCC Plug-In Selection (even after uninstall and reinstall of the install executables downloaded from http://ankhsvn.open.collab.net, which offer registration against VS Dev15/2017).
This is what eventually worked:
Removed AnkhSVN (Windows: Add or Remove Programs)
Installed AnkhSVN Nuget package (Visual Studio: Tools/Extensions and Updates)
So the trick I believe is to "remove program installed by MSI/EXE followed by install extension via Visual Studio VSIX".
I was also subsequently able to upgrade AnkhSVN (2.7.12815 from VSIX install), by running the downloaded EXE installer for the latest daily build (2.7.12821), after which AnkhSVN is available in both VS2015 and 2017, although I had to reselect it in 2015.
I had the same issue with VS2017 and tried the solution provided by AlanK to no avail.

Uninstall the source control plug-in.
Make a backup of the following files:
C:\USERS\USERNAME\APPDATA\LOCAL\MICROSOFT\VISUALSTUDIO\15.0_XXXXXXXX\privateregistry.bin
C:\USERS\USERNAME\APPDATA\LOCAL\MICROSOFT\VISUALSTUDIO\15.0_XXXXXXXX\privateregistry.user.bin
Remove these files:

Start Visual Studio 2017.
Install the source control plug-in.
You have to install "Ankh.VS15Package.vsix" package along with AnkhSVN software in your system as the version of AnkhSVN that you are installing might be supporting only up to Visual Studio 2015 or less. I had the same issue and resolved it by installing the package mentioned.
I had a similar issue after one of the Visual Studio 2017 updates. I had Visual Studio running and I was attempting to follow #AlanK's steps. I uninstalled as in Step 1. When I did Step 2, VS said the plugin was installed already. I restarted Visual Studio, thinking it was confused about the fact I uninstalled via Add/Remove programs.
I checked again and the AnkhSVN plugin was shown as disabled. I enabled it and then AnkhSVN and VS 2017 started playing nicely again.
I read the answer from Snehlata Shaw, and I think what I uninstalled from Add/Remove programs is the 2015 and earlier version of AnkhSvn. I can't be 100% sure that uninstalling it did or did not help with the 2017 version.
In summary, make sure the plugin isn't just disabled. VS 2017 says (now that is enabled) that AnknSvn slows down startup by 6 seconds and perhaps I disabled it not realizing what I was doing (Monday morning??).

I retargeted the solution as it said, and the problem persisted, even though the retargetting was completed.I decided to install visual studio 2017 because of this, and, lo and behold, it did the exact same thing.I'm also using windows 7.

I faced this problem too. Re-ran the Visual Studio 2017 Installer, go to 'Individual Components' and select Windows 8.1 SDK. Go back to to the project > Right click and Re-target to match the SDK required as shown below:

Another way (worked for 2015) is open "Install/remove programs" (Apps & features), find Visual Studio, select Modify. In opened window, press Modify, check
Languages -> Visual C++ -> Common tools for Visual C++
Windows and web development -> Tools for universal windows apps -> Tools (1.4.1)
and Windows 10 SDK ([version])
Windows and web development -> Tools for universal windows apps -> Windows 10 SDK ([version])
and install. Then right click on solution -> Re-target and it will compile
I had win10 SDK and I only had to do retarget and then I stopped getting this error. The idea was that the project needs to upgrade its target Windows SDK.
I realize this post is a few years old, but I just wanted to extend this to anyone still struggling through this issue.
The company I work for still uses VS2015 so in turn I still use VS2015. I recently started working on a RPC application using C++ and found the need to download the Win32 Templates. Like many others I was having this "SDK 8.1 was not found" issue. i took the following corrective actions with no luck.
I found the SDK through Micrsoft at the following link

I located my VS2015 install in Apps & Features and ran the repair.
I completely uninstalled my VS2015 and reinstalled it.
I attempted to manually point my console app "Executable" and "Include" directories to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Kits\8.1 and C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v8.1A\bin\NETFX 4.5.1 Tools.
None of the attempts above corrected the issue for me...

Finally what resolved the issue for me was:
Uninstalling and reinstalling VS2015.
Locating my installed "Windows Software Development Kit for Windows 8.1" and running the repair.
Checked my "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Kits\8.1" to verify the "DesignTime" folder was in fact there.
Opened VS created a Win32 Console application and comiled with no errors or issues
I hope this saves anyone else from almost 3 full days of frustration and loss of productivity.
Grep the folder tree's *.vcxproj files. Replace <WindowsTargetPlatformVersion>8.1</WindowsTargetPlatformVersion> with <WindowsTargetPlatformVersion>10.0</WindowsTargetPlatformVersion> or whatever SDK version you get when you update one of the projects.
For me in the Project Properties Settings General->Target Platform -> Change Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 solved the issue
Install the required version of Windows SDK or change the SDK version
in the project property pages
or
by right-clicking the solution and selecting "Retarget solution"

I encountered this issue while trying to build an npm project. It was failing to install a node-sass package and this was the error it was printing. I solved it by setting my npm proxy correctly so that it could reach the npm repo
PROBLEM: I ONLY get this compile-time "Windows SDK version 8.1 not found" error ( and a few other very-hard-to-resolve-nuisance errors -- cannot list them all ) when I export a project from an old version of MS Visual Studio (VS) to the new MS VS (2017), using the new MS VS export/"One-way Upgrade" feature.
SOLUTION: I have since learned to not use this export/upgrade feature and instead just create the new project from scratch -- using all my old source files, of course. Only my project settings have to be rebuilt, to be clear.
This is a bit of a pain, and a shame the export/upgrade feature won't work properly like it used to, but this is is actually easier and faster in the long run. MUCH better than working through a list of spurious errors that really should not have arisen in the first place.

I have tried by installing SQL Server Data Tools.
Previously it works for me in Visual Studio 2015.
There is a bug in the extension Microsoft Rdlc Report Designer for Visual Studio that the ReportViewer shows up as a non-visual component.
Instead use the NuGet Package Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportViewerControl.WinForms for each project that will use the ReportViewer. Part of the solution involves removing the ReportViewer from the toolbox after use and restarting Visual Studio before opening the next project/solution.

I have just used VS2015 to add the new item. All other stuff seems to be fine in VS2017 (bearing in mind that you installed the VSIX extension)
I've just Installed visual studio express 2015 on my PC and when I try to add a new source file to a project by right clicking on the 'source files' option in the solution explorer , the dialog box shows "no items found" instead of showing installed visual C++ templates. What could the problem be?
You most probably have not installed VC++ has while installing Visual Studio. It is sad that C++ is now not installed by default. You might have selected "Default" while installing VS - you should have chosen Custom and selected Visual C++ development. You need to re-install it (just re-launch setup).
