I haven't been coding with CI for long and I want to rewrite some of the routes I previously had a bit more dynamically.
For some reason, this regex I added matches everything and I cannot figure out why.
$route['([a-z]+-[a-z]+)'] = 'Main/example_function/$1';
It matches all other routes that haven't been assigned yet, even with more than one fragment. Examples of routes it matches:
example.com/aaaaa
example.com/aaaaa-asd
example.com/aaaaa/aaaa
I only need it to match specifically routes of this style:
example.com/aaaaa-aaaaa
I have other regexps in different routes, but of the form example.com/test/([a-z]+) and they work fine.
Putting it after all other declared routes is not an option because not all routes are declared there.

Thanks to Sahil Gulati answer, I found out the error. The correct regex is:
$route['([a-z]+\-[a-z]+)'] = 'Main/example_function/$1';
And it would correctly match what I wanted

You're missing www in your regex
The second \. should optional if you want to match both youtu.be and youtube (but I didn't change this since just youtube isn't actually a valid domain - see note below)
+ in your regex allows for one or more of (youtube\.com|youtu\.be), not one or more wild-cards.
You need to use a . to indicate a wild-card, and + to indicate you want one or more of them.

I know I'm like 2 years late to the party, but I was needing to write something up anyway, and seems to fit every test case that I can throw at it. Should be able to reference the first match ($1) to get the ID. Matches the http, https, www and non-www, youtube.com, youtu.be, /watch? and /watch.php? on youtube.com (youtu.be does not use these), and it supports matching even when there are other variables in the URL string (?t= for time, ?list= for playlists, etc).

I want to ignore all paths of the form /foo/* on my express server.
So I want to do
app.get('someRegexThatDoesntMatchFoo/*', routes.index)
I have tried
app.get('/^\(\(.*foo/.*\)\#!.\)*$', routes.index);
but that didnt work-- it doesn't catch all-routes-besides-foo and apply routes.index instead i get a CANNOT GET bar for any /bar request
Any suggestions?

This solution gets more and more complex as the size of the string increases.

Anyway, looking here for a regex is not the right thing.
When configuring routes, you have always to start with the more special rule and finish with the most general. Like this you would not run in such issues.
You first have to define your route for /foo/* and after that for all others *.
Define a route for /foo/* to handle (or not), then use a wildcard to handle everything else.
app.get('/foo/*', function(req,res) {
//ignore or handle
});
app.get('*', routes.index);
Negative lookahead regexps work (at least in modern times):
app.get(/^(?!\/foo\/)/, routes.index);
I'm setting up URL Rewrite on an IIS and i need to match the following URLs using regex.
http://sub.mysite.com
sub.mysite.com
sub.mysite.com/
sub.mysite.com/Site1
sub.mysite.com/Site1/admin
but not:
sub.mysite.com/admin
sub.mysite.com/admin/somethingelse
sub.mysite.com/admin/admin
The site it self (sub.mysite.com) should not be "hardcoded" in the expression. Instead, it should be matched by something like .*.
I'm really blank on this one. I did find solutions to match the different URLs but once i try to combine them either none of them match or all of them do.
I hope someone can help me.
For your specific case, assuming you are matching the part after the domain (REQUEST_URI):
(?!/admin).*
(?!...) is a negative lookahead. I am not sure if it is supported in the IIS URL Rewrite engine. If not, a better approach would be to check for a complementary approach:
Or as #kirilloid said, just match /admin/? and discard (pay attention to slashes).

I'm using regex in lighttpd to rewrite URLs, but I can't write an expression that does what I want (which I thought was pretty basic, apparently not, I'm probably missing something).
Say I have this URL: /page/variable_to_pass/ OR /page/variable_to_pass/
I want to rewrite the URL to this: /page.php?var=variable_to_pass
I've already got rules like ^/login/(.*?)$ to handle specific pages, but I wanted to make one that can match any page without needing one expression per page.
I tried this: ^/([^.?]*) but it matches the whole /page/variable_to_pass/ instead of just page.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!
This regexp should do what you need
/([^\/]+)/(.+)
First match would be page name, and the second - variable value
Try:
/([^.?])+/([^.?])+/
That should give you two matches.

There's is a very complete utility class for dealing with URIs in as3corelib. Perhaps you might want to use this instead of rolling your own.

Surrounds the regexp by the preferred separators, which might depend on language.

You can remove remove "(...)?" parts to stop that part appearing the match, for example to remove the http matching that I require.
Probably not perfect, but works for me. This site is an excellent reference for building up expressions.
