MFC, Ribbons - CMFCRibbonButton with image: Always show the text - mfc

I've got an CMFCRibbonButton that displays a text and an icon. When I compact the ribbon, in the end only the small icon is shown.
Is there a way to tell the button not to get compacted into small icon state, but always show the text as well?
I tried pButton->SetCompactMode(FALSE); without success.

To be sure, CMFCRibbonButton::SetAlwaysLargeImage() is not what you are looking for? I ask, because when only an icon without text is displayed, it is usually the panel the button sits in that has collapsed. See CMFCRibbonPanel::IsCollapsed(). If you want to modify the behavior of the panel so that it won't collape, you could try to subclass CMFCRibbonPanel and play with overrides. The MFC Ribbon is not completely documented but my best bet is CMFCRibbonPanel::IsFixedSize():
class CMyPanel : public CMFCRibbonPanel
{
...
BOOL IsFixedSize() const { return TRUE; }
...
}
If this doesn't work you have to see yourself what happens in NotifyControlCommand or OnUpdateCmdUI when the panel collapses and modify the behavior as needed.

Call button click function from grandchild

I'm creating my first C++ wxWidgets application. I'm trying to create some kind of split button where the options are displayed in a grid. I have a custom button class which, when right-clicked on, opens a custom wxPopupTransientWindow that contains other buttons.
When I click on the buttons in the popup, I want to simulate a left click on the main button. I'm trying to achieve this through events, but I'm kinda confused.
void expandButton::mouseReleased(wxMouseEvent& evt)
{
if (pressed) {
pressed = false;
paintNow();
wxWindow* mBtn = this->GetGrandParent();
mBtn->SetLabel(this->GetLabel());
mBtn->Refresh();
wxCommandEvent event(wxEVT_BUTTON);
event.SetId(GetId());
event.SetEventObject(mBtn);
mBtn-> //make it process the event somehow?
wxPopupTransientWindow* popup = wxDynamicCast(this->GetParent(), wxPopupTransientWindow);
popup->Dismiss();
}
}
What is the best way to do this?
You should do mBtn->ProcessWindowEvent() which is a shorter synonym for mBtn->GetEventHandler()->ProcessEvent() already mentioned in the comments.
Note that, generally speaking, you're not supposed to create wxEVT_BUTTON events from your own code. In this particular case and with current (and all past) version(s) of wxWidgets it will work, but a cleaner, and guaranteed to also work with the future versions, solution would be define your own custom event and generate it instead.

myComboBox->Dismiss(); not working under wxEVT_TEXT and wxEVT_COMBOBOX_DROPDOWN

My objective:
During wxEVT_COMBOBOX_DROPDOWN load up a choiceDialog and set the choice as combo box value and finally close the combobox using dismiss().
What I tried:
void Class_Scheduler_FNFrame::myComboBoxDropdown(wxCommandEvent& event)
{
SingleChoiceDialog1->ShowModal();
int i = SingleChoiceDialog1->GetSelection();
myComboBox->SetValue(wxString::Format(("%s"), myWxStringArray[i]));
myComboBox->Dismiss();
}
The value got changed but the dismiss(); is not working.
So I tried moving dismiss to wxEVT_TEXT.
void Class_Scheduler_FNFrame::myComboBoxTextUpdated(wxCommandEvent& event)
{
testLabel->SetLabel("This should have worked");
myComboBox->Dismiss();
}
Dismiss() is not working in wxEVT_TEXT as well. But when I type onto the combobox, after triggering wxEVT_COMBOBOX_DROPDOWN, dismiss() is working through wxEVT_TEXT .
Help!
You're trying to do something rather weird: have you ever seen a modal dialog show while the combobox dropdown is opened? I haven't and, generally speaking, there should be only a single modal element shown at each moment.
So why do you have this objective? What is the point of showing the dialog whenever a combobox is opened? It doesn't even seem like you're using it like a combobox at all. Maybe you're actually after some kind of wxFilePickerCtrl-like behaviour, i.e. a small button showing the dialog near a text control? Or maybe you want to use wxComboCtrl instead?
Anyhow, it should be possible to do what you want by postponing showing the dialog using CallAfter(), but I'm almost sure that you actually don't want to do that anyhow.

How to manually show CMFCToolBarComboBoxButton sub-menu?

Standard behaviour for CMFCToolBarComboBoxButton is to have a clickable button plus a drop-down arrow for displaying a submenu. I want to show the submenu independently of where the click was made. How can I do it?
My code to create the button is, more or less, the following (it has been extracted from a larger project, so I apologize for any missing not-too-important piece of code):
// In class declaration:
CMenu m_menu;
CMFCToolBar m_toolbar;
// Where toolbar initialization takes place:
m_menu.CreateMenu();
// ... populate menu
// ID_BUTTON is the ID in the resource file for the toolbar button, 0 is the index for the button icon
CMFCToolBarMenuButton button(ID_BUTTON, m_menu.GetSafeHmenu(), 0);
m_toolbar.ReplaceButton(ID_BUTTON, button);
I've been looking around for awhile and cannot find a related answer.
The solution happened to be very straightforward, just call the OnClick function of the CMFCToolBarComboBoxButton button from its associated ON_COMMAND.
// ... message map
ON_COMMAND(ID_BUTTON, OnToolbarMenuButtonClicked)
// ...
void MyWnd::OnToolbarMenuButtonClicked()
{
const int index = m_toolbar.CommandToIndex(ID_BUTTON);
auto button = (CMFCToolBarComboBoxButton*)m_toolbar.GetButton(index);
button->OnClick(NULL, TRUE);
}
This behaviour is not documented and, contrary to what common sense told me, it doesn't create an infinite recursive call. It seems that the "main" button is still controlled by CMFCToolBarButton, while just the "arrow-button" is controlled by the CMFCToolBarComboBoxButton.
PS: obviously, and out of the scope of the question, the OnToolbarMenuButtonClicked can be used for a very different purpose, such as the default action while the sub-menu contains other less-frequent options.

Taking data from a Dialog in Qt and using it in a Ui

So I'm making a text editor using Qt and right now I have a button that opens a dialog called "Format text". I want it to work kind of like the dialog in notepad called "font" where you select a few text attributes from some drop down lists and it shows you what your text will look like. Right now I have it working where you can select the font style, font color, and font size and hit preview and it shows you in a box in the dialog what your text will look like. However, I have a button called "okay" which is supposed to change the highlighted text or the text you are about to type, but I can't figure out how to display those changes on the main window. The .ui files are private and a lot of the already made functions and pointers are the same in every ui file so if I change the ui file to pubic I have to change a whole bunch of things. Can anyway give me a simple answer? I'm trying to do this with as little confusion as possible. More coding and less confusion is better than less coding and more confusion for someone of my skill level. Sorry that this is all one giant paragraph and that I didn't provide any code, but I didn't think the code was necessary, however if you do need some of the code i'd be happy to share it.
Thank you for your help and your time. I hope you all have a nice evening.
QDialog have a signal called finished(), you can connect this signal with your slot. To accomplish your work, pass a QSettings or for simplicity QStringList to dialog settings (responsible for changing font, color ...), the QStringList will save user defined settings, after closing the dialog, iterate through QStringList member to alert Main window.
A pseudo code will look like this
Class Editor:
Editor::Editor()
{
TextSettings textSettings;
textSettings.setSettings(settings); // settings is a member
connect(textSettings, &finished(int)), this, SLOT(alertEditor(int)))
}
Editor::alertEditor(int s)
{
if(s == 0)
{
for (int i = 0; i < settings.size(); ++i)
settings.at(i).toLocal8Bit().constData(); // extract various user settings
}
}
Class TextSettings:
TextSettings::TextSettings(QStringList settings)
{
settings << ui->combobox->currentItem(); // font name as example
}

How do I display a tooltip for a CMFCRibbonButton in the status bar?

I have a CMFCRibbonStatusBar in my mainframe to which I add a CMFCRibbonButtonsGroup which again has a CMFCRibbonButton. This button has the same ID as a menu entry.
Creating the button is done as follows:
CMFCRibbonButtonsGroup* pBGroup = new CMFCRibbonButtonsGroup();
CMFCToolBarImages images;
images.SetImageSize(CSize(32, 16)); // Non-square bitmaps
if(images.Load(IDB_STATUSBAR_IMAGES))
{
pBGroup->SetImages(&images, NULL, NULL);
}
m_pStatusButton = new CMFCRibbonButton(ID_STATUS_SHOWSTATUS,
_T(""),
IMAGEINDEX_DEFAULTSTATUS);
pBGroup->AddButton(m_pStatusButton);
m_wndStatusBar.AddExtendedElement(pBGroup, _T(""));
I want to use this button as a status indicator.
I want to display a tool tip in the following two cases:
when the status changes and
when the user moves the mouse over the button.
I have no idea how to start in the first place. I have looked at the ToolTipDemo and DlgToolTips sample projects but couldn't figure out how to do it since all they do is display tooltips for the toolbar items or dialog buttons (CWnd-derived instead of CMFCRibbonButton).
If you are familiar with the ToolTipDemo sample project: Since there seem to be several ways of doing things, I would prefer the tooltip to look like the "Extended Visual Manager-based" tool tip as shown in this screenshot.
Thanks!
I don't think it's possible to show the tooltip without the mouse cursor being over the control. That's all done automatically.
However if you want to have a nice looking tooltip like in your screenshot, you need to call SetToolTipText and SetDescription, like this:
CMFCRibbonButton* pBtn = new CMFCRibbonButton(12345, _T(""), 1);
pBtn->SetToolTipText("This is the bold Title");
pBtn->SetDescription("This is the not-so-bold Description");
pGroup->AddButton(pBtn);
I am using CMFCRibbonButton controls within a CMFCRibbonButtonGroup, which is added to the CMFCRibbonStatusBar. Take note of the 4th parameter in the CMFCRibbonButton() constructor, bAlwaysShowDescription, as this seems to affect the behavior depending upon whether SetDescription() has been called.
Specifically, if SetDescription() has not been called, it doesn't matter whether bAlwaysShowDescription is TRUE or FALSE - the tool tip is displayed (as I would expect). If SetDescription() is set and bAlwaysShowDescription is FALSE, when hovering over the button the tool tip is displayed with the description below it.
What seems counterintuitive given the name of this bAlwaysShowDescription parameter, is that when this is TRUE and SetDescription() is set, NEITHER the tool tip nor the description appear. I wonder if this is related to this post:
https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/399646/cmfcribbonbutton-wont-show-tooltip-if-balwaysshowdescription-1
Hope this helps and you can achieve what you need with the different combinations of bAlwaysShowDescription parameter and whether SetDescription() is set.
