Compiling program using gfortran and the HDF-EOS2 library - fortran

I have the problem of linking the HDF-EOS library to a Fortran90 program. I have compiled the library from source to a directory specified in $prefix. My simple compile command is:
gfortran -I$prefix/include -L$prefix/lib -Wl,-rpath -Wl,$prefix/lib -lhdfeos -lGctp -lmfhdf -ldf -lz -lsz -ljpeg tst.f90
When compiling, I get the following error:
undefined reference to `gdopen_'
In the program, which I am not supposed to change, the HDF-EOS library is used via the external keyword, e.g.
integer(kind=4), external :: gdopen
In the library, nm $prefix/lib/libhdfeos.a | grep gdopen gives me:
00000000000120c0 T gdopen
When compiling with -fno-underscoring, I get just a different error:
gfortran -fno-underscoring -I$prefix/include -L$prefix/lib -Wl,-rpath -Wl,$prefix/lib -lhdfeos -lGctp -lmfhdf -ldf -lz -lsz -ljpeg tst.f90
the error is then:
undefined reference to `gdopen'
Also, gfortran finds the libraries, otherwise it would complain. Is the error related to the underscore? What else can I try? I work on Fedora and gfortran version 4.7.2.

Yes, very likely to be caused by the underscore.
Try compiling with -fno-underscoring (https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gfortran/Code-Gen-Options.html), but fixing it by a proper bind(C) interface would be better.
This tutorial (Did you read it before going here? Very easy to find even for a complete novice in the library, like me.) also states you should use -fno-underscoring.
Continue by implementing the rest what the tutorial recommends, including compiling with FC=$(HDF4_DIR)/bin/h4fc.

Undefined reference when combining C++ and Fortran [duplicate]

I am trying to link a .o file generated using g++ and another .o file generated using gfortran.
g++ -c mycppcode.cpp
produces the file mycppcode.o and the command
gfortran -c myfortrancode.f
produces the file myfortrancode.o
When I link these two files to get an output file
g++ -O mycppcode.o myfortrancode.o
I get the following error

Could some one help me with this? Should I use another compiler? Also, I would like to know what functions or subroutines call "__gfortran_pow_c8_i4", so that I can try to avoid these functions or subroutines in fortran in future.
The following assumes you are using the GNU compiler tools. Things may be slightly different if you are using other compilers.
You can use either compiler to link the two together, but you need to provide the appropriate libraries.
Typically, you can use either
gfortran fortobj.o cppobj.o -lstdc++
or
g++ fortobj.o cppobj.o -lgfortran
This assumes that you are using a setup where both compilers know about each other's libraries (like if you installed through a linux repository).
In the case of the OP the C compilers came from XCode and gfortran is from homebrew. In that case, gfortran knows about the g++ libraries (since they were used to compile the compiler), but g++ doesn't know about the gfortran libraries. This is why using gfortran to link worked as advertised above. However, to link with g++ you need to add the path to libgfortran.* when you call the linker using the -L flag, like
g++ fortobj.o cppobj.o -L/path/to/fortran/libs -lgfortran
If for some reason your gfortran compiler is unaware of your g++ libs, you would do
gfortran fortobj.o cppobj.o -L/path/to/c++/libs -lstdc++
Note that there shouldn't be any difference in the final executable. I'm no compiler expert, but my understanding is that using the compiler to link your objects together is a convenience for calling the linker (ld on UNIX-like OS's) with the appropriate libraries associated with the language you are using. Therefore, using one compiler or the other to link shouldn't matter, as long as the right libraries are included.

Need some help figuring out compile-time error: 'Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64: "boost::system::system_category()"' [duplicate]

I'm trying to compile a program on Ubuntu 11.10 that uses the Boost libraries. I have the 1.46-dev Boost libraries from the Ubuntu Repository installed, but I get an error when compiling the program.
undefined reference to boost::system::system_category()
What is it that I do wrong?
The boost library you are using depends on the boost_system library. (Not all of them do.)
Assuming you use gcc, try adding -lboost_system to your compiler command line in order to link against that library.
Linking with a library that defines the missing symbol (-lboost_system) is the obvious solution, but in the particular case of Boost.System, a misfeature in the original design makes it use boost::system::generic_category() and boost::system::system_category() needlessly. Compiling with the flag -DBOOST_SYSTEM_NO_DEPRECATED disables that code and lets a number of programs compile without requiring -lboost_system (that link is of course still needed if you explicitly use some of the library's features).
Starting from Boost 1.66 and this commit, this behavior is now the default, so hopefully fewer and fewer users should need this answer.
As noticed by #AndrewMarshall, an alternative is to define BOOST_ERROR_CODE_HEADER_ONLY which enables a header-only version of the code. This was discouraged by Boost as it can break some functionality. However, since 1.69, header-only seems to have become the default, supposedly making this question obsolete.
Another workaround for those who don't need the entire shebang: use the switch
-DBOOST_ERROR_CODE_HEADER_ONLY.
If you use CMake, it's add_definitions(-DBOOST_ERROR_CODE_HEADER_ONLY).
The above error is a linker error... the linker a program that takes one or more objects generated by a compiler and combines them into a single executable program.
You must add -lboost_system to you linker flags which indicates to the linker that it must look for symbols like boost::system::system_category() in the library libboost_system.so.
If you have main.cpp, either:
g++ main.cpp -o main -lboost_system
OR
g++ -c -o main.o main.cpp
g++ main.o -lboost_system
When using CMAKE and find_package, make sure it is :
find_package(Boost COMPONENTS system ...)
and not
find_package(boost COMPONENTS system ...)
Some people may have lost hours for that ...

When I had this, problem, the cause was the ordering of the libraries. To fix it, I put libboost_system last:
g++ mingw/timer1.o -o mingw/timer1.exe -L/usr/local/boost_1_61_0/stage/lib \
-lboost_timer-mgw53-mt-1_61 \
-lboost_chrono-mgw53-mt-1_61 \
-lboost_system-mgw53-mt-1_61
This was on mingw with gcc 5.3 and boost 1.61.0 with a simple timer example.
in my case, adding -lboost_system was not enough, it still could not find it in my custom build environment. I had to use the advice at Get rid of "gcc - /usr/bin/ld: warning lib not found" and change my ./configure command to:
./configure CXXFLAGS="-I$HOME/include" LDFLAGS="-L$HOME/lib -Wl,-rpath-link,$HOME/lib" --with-boost-libdir=$HOME/lib --prefix=$HOME

...and in case you wanted to link your main statically, in your Jamfile add the following to requirements:
<link>static
<library>/boost/system//boost_system
and perhaps also:
<linkflags>-static-libgcc
<linkflags>-static-libstdc++

Static linking to libcrypto++, with g++

I am trying to compile a program on my system with Debian Wheezy and g++4.7. I want it to be able to run on another system with Debian Squeeze (and no recent g++). I can't compile the program on the Squeeze, because I use certain C++11 features the old g++ does not support, as well as a new Boost version and libcrypto++9.
As far as I understand the usual way to get around this problem is to static link the libraries not supported at the other system, in my case libstdc, boost and crypto++.
My (linking) compiler call right now is
g++-4.7 .obj/btcmirco.o -Wl,-Bstatic -lboost_program_options -lboost_system -lcrypto++ -Wl,-Bdynamic -lcurl -static-libgcc -std=c++11 -o MyProgram
However I seem to have missed something, because it throws a lot of undefined reference errors. It works fine if I dynamic link to crypto++ (and only static link libstdc and boost).
Can anyone tell me whats wrong, or if there is a fundamental error in my approach?

I experienced the same problem and this has to do with the fact that you are trying to mix code generated by g++-4.7 (your program) with code generated by a previous version of g++ (cryptopp library).
The reason behind this is that when you execute compile the library executing make command, it uses the default version of g++ set up for your system, usually the one that comes with the OS.
In order to solve the issue what you should do is compile cryptopp library with g++-4.7.
For that, compile the library by executing make CXX=g++-4.7. The resulting static library shouldn't give you the error when being linked with your code.

Undefined Reference Error When Linking to Static Library

I am trying to compile a project that depends on the Xerces XML Parser. The project compiles for Windows without any difficulty, but I'm having some trouble compiling it with g++ in Cygwin.
In order to use Xerces, I am trying to compile my code against the static library libxerces-c.a. But when I do so, I get errors that look like this:

I've inspected the static library using ar, and confirmed that it contains the DOMImplementationRegistry.o file that defines the function that I am calling.

I've also extracted the object files from the library, and used 'nm' to make sure that the function I am calling actually exists:

Since I can compile everything for Windows but not with g++, I thought that the error could be in the linker order (similar to the problem described in this question). However, even after changing the linker order, I am still getting the same compiler error. I have tried both
g++ -o test.exe test.cpp -Llib -lxerces-c
and
g++ -o test.exe test.cpp lib/libxerces-c.a
Any ideas?
Your project uses method from xercesc_2_6 namespace as pointed by compiler error message but your library offers xercesc_2_8 version. Problem is probably caused by mismatch between headers you use and library object file.
You didn't say the source of the archive. If it isn't compiled with cygwin, it could be a name mangling problem. Compiling the library from source might well fix this.
It could also be that the archive is built incorrectly so that it has internal resolution problems. Try giving the library name twice.
g++ -o test.exe test.cpp lib/libxerces-c.a lib/libxerces-c.a
If this works, the archive is broken and you should look for or build a new one.
Try the linker option --enable-stdcall-fixup (see 'man ld'). It will care for name mangling and calling conventions:
g++ -o test.exe test.o -Wl,--enable-stdcall-fixup -Llib -lxerces-c
