How to reference application files from within an AWS container_commands - amazon-web-services

I'm trying to run a grunt build in the container_commands section of my .ebextensions/init.config file. The command in question looks like this:
10-run-grunt:
command: $NODE_HOME/bin/node $NODE_HOME/bin/grunt --gruntfile /tmp/deploy/application/Gruntfile.js build
Since you would usually run the grunt build command from within the application root, which I'm unable to do from container_commands, you can see I'm specifying the path to the gruntfile using the --gruntfile <path_to_gruntfile> option.
My question is: how do you get the path to application files from within a container_commands command? I assume there is an environment variable which represents this.

Elastic Beanstalk deleting generated files on config changes

On Elastic Beanstalk, with an AWS Linux 2 based environment, updating the Environment Properties (i.e. environment variables) of an environment causes all generated files to be deleted. It also doesn't run container_commands as part of this update.
So, for example, I have a Django project with collectstatic in the container commands:

python manage.py collectstatic --noinput --ignore *.scss
This collects static files to a folder called staticfiles as part of deploy. But when I do an environment variable update, staticfiles is deleted. This causes all static files on the application to be broken until I re-deploy, which is extremely undesirable.
This behavior did not occur on AWS Linux 1 based environments. The difference appears to be that AWS Linux 2 based environments replace the /var/app/current folder during environment variable changes, where AWS Linux 1 based environments did not do this.
How do I fix this?
Research
I can verify that the container commands are not being run during an environment variable change by monitoring /var/log/cfn-init.log; no new entries are added to this log.
This happens with both rolling update type "disabled" and "immutable".
This happens even if I convert the environment command to be a platform hook, despite the fact that hooks are listed as running when environment properties are updated.
It seems to me like there are two potential solutions, but I don't know of an Elastic Beanstalk setting for either:
Have environment variable changes leave /var/app/current rather than replacing it.
Have environment variable changes run container commands.
The Elastic Beanstalk docs on container commands say "Leader-only container commands are only executed during environment creation and deployments, while other commands and server customization operations are performed every time an instance is provisioned or updated." Is this a bug in Elastic Beanstalk?

The solution is to use a Configuration deployment platform hook for any commands that change the files in the deployment directory. Note that this is different from an Application deployment platform hook.
Using the example of the collectstatic command, the best thing to do is to move it from a container command to a pair of hooks, one for standard deployments and one for configuration changes.
To do this, remove the collectstatic container command. Then, make two identical files:
.platform/confighooks/predeploy/predeploy.sh
.platform/hooks/predeploy/predeploy.sh
Each file should have the following code:
#!/bin/bash
source $PYTHONPATH/activate
python manage.py collectstatic --noinput --ignore *.scss
You need two seemingly redundant files because different hooks have different trigger conditions. Scripts in hooks run when you deploy the app whereas scripts in confighooks run when you change the configuration of the app.
Make sure to make both of these files executable according to git or else you will run into a "permission denied" error when you try to deploy. You can check if they are executable via git ls-files -s .platform; you should see 100755 before any shell files in the output of this command. If you see 100644 before any of your shell files, run git add --chmod=+x -- .platform/*/*/*.sh to make them executable.

Jenkins post build python script file

I am new to Jenkins, specially with using python script in Jenkins. The problem I am facing is as follow:
I am trying to run a python script from a python file in the post-build step of the Jenkins. I have added all the plugins required for that purpose to my understanding. i.e I have included Post-BuildScript plugin, python jenkins plugin etc.
Now when I build console output shows invalid script command caused the failure. I have attached the results below. can anybody help me with that please?
In post build step I am providing the full or absolute path to the python script file i.e
ExecutepythonScriptpath

It may be useful to mention here I have also tried using just the path without writing python preceding the path, also tried with forward as well as backward slash in the path. without any success.
I have managed to resolve that issue. There are two parts of solution:
First one is if you want to run simple python script in post-build -->Add a post build step for Execute python Script (That will require you install plugin for post build ) . In that window created after adding post build step you can simply put any python command to run.
Second part of the solution is for, when user would like to run a list of commands from a python script file from the same post build step window in that case user has to make sure to put all the required python files which you want to execute into the Jenkins workspace->project directory(project for which we are running the Jenkins ) .
Moreover, for Python2.7 in order to execute that python script file user simply need to write script as
execfile(file.py)
One more thing to remember is insert python.exe path in the environment variables.

command not found from Jenkins Execute Shell

Hi Jenkins and AWS Guru's
I already look online for any possible solutions but not getting a solution for my problem. I just issued an "eb --version" on Jenkins execute shell under a test project but getting "eb: command not found" during the execution.
Wierd thing is if I issue the same command on the Jenkins box via CLI I'm getting a good response from it. Any suggestions for the fix please? thanks in advance
Your Jenkins setup has a different path than the user you logged in with.
There are two solutions:
Add the path to the executable in the PATH environment variable. Use where eb to find the correct path. Then in Jenkins, click on
Manage Jenkins -> Configure System, Global Properties. Check Environment Variables. Set Name to PATH. Set Value to $PATH:/path/to/eb. Then restart Jenkins.
Call the eb command with its fully qualified path.
EDIT: Added steps to update path in Jenkins.
this is now fixed, need to create a properties file that was basically a copy of /var/lib/jenkins/.bash_profile file which would have the correct paths and add that in Jenkins settings. Allowing it to get the required paths. After properties file is created you need to set it on Jenkins-Configure section, Place a check on Prepare jobs environment then set the full path of the properties file (/var/lib/jenkins/environment_variables.properties) on the Properties File Path and restart Jenkins

Elastic Beanstalk .ebextensions ignored (Windows)

This is Driving me nuts.
I had a working .ebextensions config file in my Project which was working fine.
Recently my single instance failed and a new one got initiated. My configuration failed to run so i tried to troubleshoot what went wrong. I didn't find anything suspicious so i just created a new .config with a very simple command but it still fails!!
I validated my config file with an online yaml validator.
I Connected to the instance through remote desktop and saw that .ebextensions folder is actually created within the wwwroot and then it disappears meaning that it got successfully picked up by elastic beanstalk.
I also granted all permissions to everyone on the test folder just to make sure this is not the reason.
Whichever i tried the old configuration or this test command it just does not work and elastic beanstalk just ignores it!
Any info of what might be wrong is appreciated.

I think everything under 01_DoWork needs to be indented (command, cwd, waitForCompletion). Also, make sure you're using spaces and not tabs.
Check the properties on your config file in VS. It should be (I think) both 'Content' and 'Copy if Newer'. Also, make sure that it gets packaged into the msdeploy package. It's a .zip file in/below your obj directory.
The command will error-out of it's already succeeded, so you would want to either ignore errors or add this. I found this syntax on another SO post but don't know who to credit for it :-/. The errorlevel will cause your command to not run if the directory already exists.

If you're creating a package.zip (that inside has a deploy manifest json file plus the actual site.zip content) for a Windows deployment, it appears the .ebextensions directory needs to be inside package.zip, alongside the manifest json, not inside the site.zip, contrary to the current documentation.

How to set up and use EC2 CLI on Mac?

I am stuck at using Amazon EC2 CLI.
I have downloaded the Command Line Tools from
http://aws.amazon.com/developertools/351.
I placed the bin and lib folder into my Amazon project folder: /Users/Invictus/EC2
I downloaded the cert-xxxx.pem and pk-xxx.pem into the same folder.
Created a .bash_profile in the same folder.
I tried to execute ec2-describe-images -o amazon after I moved to cd /Users/Invictus/EC2.
The system does not recognise the command: command not found.
If I try to execute the same command inside the bin folder, the result is the same.
My .bash_profile:

export EC2_PRIVATE_KEY=`ls $EC2_HOME/pk-*.pem`

Where did I make a mistake?
My aim is to connect to the launched instance and be able to execute commands there from my local machine.
I have Java installed.
The newer AWS Unified CLI Tools is much, much easier to set up. All you need is Python, which comes built-in to every Mac.
Here are a few things I can think of:
Your .bash_profile should be in /Users/Invictus/ , not /Users/Invictus/EC2. Move it to your home directory and log off and log back in (or restart your machine) and see if it picks up the right path.
Instead of ec2-describe-images, can you run it as "./ec2-describe-images" - does that work? If not, can you check the permissions on that script?
