I'm having a problem with VS2013, in that it won't build any projects, new or existing.
I'm always met with the error:
... Please build the project and retry, or set the output path and assemblyname properties to point at the correct location for the target assembly.
My output window shows:
1>Project 'WindowsFormsApplication3' is not up to date. Missing output file 'c:\users\ ... \WindowsFormsApplication3\bin\Debug\WindowsFormsApplication3.exe'.
1>------ Build started: Project: WindowsFormsApplication3, Configuration: Debug Any CPU ------
========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ==========
I've searched around and pretty much everyone seems to think to solve this I should have "build" checked within my configuration manager - it is.
Also, that in the Options -> Projects and Solutions -> Build and Run - I should have "on Run when projects are out of date:" set to prompt or always build - it is. It's also set to any cpu (although even fails still when set to x86 etc).
And finally, that my output path is set correctly, which it is "bin\Debug".
I'm racking my brain over this one, and I'm stumped. This all started happening after a reboot of the PC, and there were no issues before that. New VB apps will build fine, it's just the windows forms / console projects ones thats giving me hell.
== Edit ==
Tried a repair on the installation, had no effect on it at all, neither has a reset all settings.
I can build from the command line however (msbuild) - a clean/build will build with no errors, however if you then modify the project and try and build from the application proper it'll error again, with an error like:
Project 'WindowsFormsApplication3' is not up to date. Input file 'c:\users\ ... \WindowsFormsApplication3\bin\Debug\WindowsFormsApplication3.pdb'.
Had exactly the same problem. Turned out we had to run VS with elevated privileges - even though it looked like it was running as admin (even declared the fact in the title bar).
We were using Avecto Defendpoint to provide the elevation if that helps.

When I build a project in vs 2017, I can get errors like this:
1>------ Build started: Project: TortoiseGitMerge, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------
1>Performing Custom Build Tools
1>The system cannot find the path specified.
1>C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\Common7\IDE\VC\VCTargets\Microsoft.CppCommon.targets(171,5): error MSB6006: "cmd.exe" exited with code 3.
1>Done building project "TortoiseMerge.vcxproj" -- FAILED.
========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 10 up-to-date, 0 skipped ==========
In this error message, there is no information leading me closer to a solution.
Which path was specified?
How do I find out? What is the exact reason that the path in question was not written in that error message?
Performing Custom Build Tools
That isn't enough to know what is going on. You'll want to jack up the build verbosity so you can see these custom build commands getting executed. Finding the one that failed then gives you a shot at diagnosing the mishap.
Use Tools > Options > Projects and Solutions > Build and Run, "MSBuild project build output verbosity" = Detailed. The build trace you now see in the Output window gets a lot more chatty and should show the actual command that fell over.
I'm trying to learn C++ programming with wxWidgets and CodeBlocks (with MinGW) and earlier today I succeeded in installing the software (after some trouble) to my Windows 7 computer with the guidance given to me in this post:
wxWidget 2.8.12 not working in Codeblocks
Later on the same day, I did the exact same steps on another Windows 7 machine and after creating a wxWidgets project and trying to compile and run it I got the following errors:
\wxWidgets-2.9.4\include: No such file or directory
\wxWidgets-2.9.4\lib\gcc_lib\mswu: No such file or directory
I have checked and these folders really do exist on those locations...so what seems to be the problem here again?...on the earlier post user asanth kumar guided me that if the steps given in the guide don't get the job done, then I'm missing an important compiler search path in my build options.
Ok, so what do I do? Where do I enter the search path? What is the search path, etc. I'm very new with wxWidgets and CodeBlocks so I don't know very much terminology. If anyone should know what to do, could you please give me like step by step instruction what to do e.g. like Click Project --> Build options --> ... and so on
I have used the latest CodeBlocks (12.11) and wxWidgets (2.9.4) installers
Thank you for any help :)
UPDATE:
here is the build log: (I'm using CodeBlocks 12.11 and wxWidgets 2.9.4)

windres.exe -I"C:\Users\Jonne\Omat ohjelmat\wxWidgets-2.9.4\include" -I"C:\Users\Jonne\Omat ohjelmat\wxWidgets-2.9.4\lib\gcc_lib\mswu" -J rc -O coff -i C:\Users\Jonne\DOCUME~1\CODEBL~1\TEST\resource.rc -o obj\Debug\resource.res

Here is also a picture where you can see Build options, global variables and build log on my CodeBlocks:
NOTICE FUTURE READERS: Install wxWidgets to a directory without whitespace in the path name. The problems in this post was because the directory path had spaces in it
When you create a wxWidgets project.Have you did this?
File->New->Project->wxWidgets Project->Click Go->Click on Next->click on the suitable wxWidgets 2...version->click Next->Give project Name->Click on Next->Click on Next
After that the Following below Screen comes in the Wizard. Give the wxWidgets Location(Path where You installed the wxWidgets 2.9.4)
After that click on Finish.
For Environment Variable Path Setting
Follow the Below Steps:
Right click on MyComputer->Click on Advanced Systems settings->click on Environment Variables->click on New->Give variable name=Path and variable value="C:\Program Files (x86)\CodeBlocks\MinGW\bin" -> click ok
`
Try The Following Steps.It will work.
Updates about Build settings:
I am having the same problem as this and I somehow solved my problem.
I transfer my wxWidget folder to another location path that don't have white space name on it's path. For example above, "C:\Users\Jonne*Omat ohjelmat*\wxWidgets-2.9.4\include"
the path has white space between Omat ohjelmat. Try transfering it where the path contains no white spaces. For me, I put it on C:\wxWidgets-3.1.2
I am developing a Windows 8 store app. I added unit tests by choosing Solution >> Add >> new project >> Unit Test Library (Windows Store apps). I am then able to run the tests fine.
However, I then add a reference to my original Windows 8 store app project (following the instructions here), and when I try to run the tests again, I get the following error:
------ Discover test started ------

What am I doing wrong?
Update: Commenting out the following line from App.xaml solved the problem:
<ResourceDictionary Source="Common/StandardStyles.xaml"/>
Why?
Multiple things can cause this. Here are a couple I've found:
Application tag in app.xaml setting any properties (like RequestedTheme)
App.xaml referencing a ResourceDictionary which uses custom attached properties.
Try commenting out contents of App.xaml to see if that helps.
This happened the first time I've tried debugging with Eclipse juno C++:
Error in final launch sequence
Failed to execute MI command:
-exec-run
Error message from debugger back end:
Error creating process <full path>... (error 193)
Running the program using "Run" instead of "Debug" works just fine but when I try debug I get this. I googled about a bit and found somewhere that I should remove any spaces from the directory; I did that but it still isn't working.
The version of eclipse I'm running is:
Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers
Version: Juno Service Release 1
Build id: 20120920-0800
Edit:
Problem is sorted! It was because I had forgot the space in my user account name. Because I couldn't be bothered to go through a load of mess changing the folder name in users I just moved my workspace folders straight to my C Drive so the path that it follows is now: C:\eclipse\WorkspaceC++
Thank you very much to john in the comments :)
From OP edit: Problem is sorted!

I'm creating a kinect project in Visual Studio 2008 using OpenNi, NITE and OpenGL.
At random times dureing development I get the following error:
Error result 1 returned from 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin\rc.exe'.
I've searched the internet with no luck.
I am able to create a new project and copy all my code across and it works fine but this is not something I want to be doing multiple times each day.
If any more info is required I'd be happy to give it.

You are referencing your RC file via a relative path (..).
It seems likely your current directory is changing, and hence .., and the path to your RC file changes, causing the error.
You will have to make sure that your RC file is referred to in a way that doesn't change.
Try removing it from the project, and re-adding it, taking care to refer to it only in absolute terms.
Check your project and build settings for the directory where the build is to start, and how the filename is preserved in the project settings. You're looking for something like "Persist Filenames As...".
I had the same error. Move your entire project folder into documents/visualstudio/projects. If that doesn't work, move it to your desktop. It is just a linking problem, it can't find the resources. Make sure you aren't moving your folders around as this can cause these issues.
A possible reason for the error described - .rc file was renamed.
Check the .rc file name in your .vcproj file and see that it actually exists on disk.
