We have a project for which we are storing user profile photos in Sitecore. Our user base is going to be integrated with LDAP (meaning that we will have tens of thousands of users, if not more), and profiles will be created the first time a user logs in. Users will be able to change their profile photos later, and we have a customized Sitecore Profile, which has a property to store the ID of the profile photo media item.
What I am trying to do is figure out a way to avoid breaking the 100 item limit and store the photos in the Sitecore Media Library. We do not want to use item buckets, and we want to leverage Sitecore caching, so storing the images externally is out. I was thinking about a ten-level deep folder structure based on the username, but that is a bit dirty.
Does anyone have any suggestions that might help?
Thank you, in advance.
Sitecore 6.6
Avoiding breaking the 100 children limit is a very good practice and you should follow this for sure.
To achieve this in your scenario you definitely need some kind of folder structure. Creating such a kind of structure is not fun. You can automate it by adding you event handler to item:created event and move the newly created item automatically.
I've written quick code that should check if the current folder contains max 50 items and if not it tries to create additional folders with a single char as a name recursively and move the item to the folder.
You wrote that you're storing reference as ID so moving the item will not break reference.
Please have in my that I haven't tested the code so it might need tweaking.
<event name="item:created">
<handler type="My.Assembly.Namespace.ProfilePhotoHandler, My.Assembly" method="OnItemCreated" />
</event>
protected void OnItemCreated(object sender, EventArgs args)
{
ItemCreatedEventArgs eventArgs = Event.ExtractParameter(args, 0) as ItemCreatedEventArgs;
if (eventArgs == null || eventArgs.Item == null)
return;
Item item = eventArgs.Item;
if (item == null
|| !item.Paths.IsMediaItem
|| !item.Paths.FullPath.Contains("/profile-images/")
|| item.TemplateID.ToString() == "{FE5DD826-48C6-436D-B87A-7C4210C7413B}")
// we want to move only media items in profile-images and not media folders
return;
string guid = item.ID.ToShortID().ToString();
MoveItemToProperDirectory(guid, item, item.Parent, 0);
}
private void MoveItemToProperDirectory(string guid, Item item, Item folder, int level)
{
if (folder.Children.Count < 1)
{
if (item.Parent.ID != folder.ID)
{
item.MoveTo(folder);
}
return;
}
using (new SecurityDisabler())
{
// take next letter from the hash or random char if the hash is too short
string newSubfolderName = (level < guid.Length)
? guid[level].ToString()
: ('a' + new Random((int)DateTime.Now.Ticks).Next(24)).ToString();
Item subfolder = folder.Children.FirstOrDefault(c => c.Name == newSubfolderName);
if (subfolder == null)
{
// create new Media Folder and move the item there
subfolder = folder.Add(newSubfolderName, new TemplateID(ID.Parse("{FE5DD826-48C6-436D-B87A-7C4210C7413B}")));
}
MoveItemToProperDirectory(guid, item, subfolder, level + 1);
}
}
If somehow an update is not an option, you could consider the following:
The images are not used by content editors, thus from the content editor, the items are not used.
This makes it possible to hide the node that contains the images, just like the buckets do.
Combining this with a folder structure (created during import, or in the handles) makes a good solution.

I have seen how we can provide default conditions and default actions to newly created bucket items. I also know that we can create a custom rule for building path based on custom date field.
But, how can we set the item path when the date field is and the is saved.
Consider an example. We have a bucket item template say "News" which has a date field say "Release Date". We have the settings where on item creation, the item path has the creation date like "/News/2015/09/16/item1". Now, we need to have some logic where we can change the path when the "release date" of "item1" is updated and the item is Saved.
How can we update the item path when item's release date is updated and item is Saved !! do i need to implement some logic in OnItemSaved() method ?
I already went through posts on GeekHive
The simplest way to do this would be to hook into the item:saved event and sync the bucket in there. The following code is untested:
public class ItemSavedEventHandler
{
public void Execute(object sender, ItemSavedEventArgs args)
{
Assert.IsNotNull(sender, "sender is null");
Assert.IsNotNull(args, "args is null");
// WARNING: using the events disabler is not recommended in this case.
// If you do this, the path of the item in question will not be updated and will cause issues when you edit the page and try to specify rendering data sources (the locations won't resolve)
using (new EventsDisabler())
{
var parameter = args.Item;
if (!BucketManager.IsItemContainedWithinBucket(paremeter))
{
return;
}
var bucketItem = parameter.GetParentBucketItemOrParent();
if (!bucketItem.IsABucket())
{
return;
}
BucketManager.Sync(bucketItem);
}
}
}
On a bucket with a lot of items, this will considerably slow down the save process tho.
If I understood you right, you want your bucket item path to be based on date updated rather than created? Am I right with that?
If yes, that it is not going to be a straightforward thing to do. I see the following approach to implement that.
Configure your bucket to be organised by update date, not created (you mentioned you already know how to configure that behavior). Every Sitecore item derived from Standard Template should have Statistics section where is __Updated field (with two underscores a the beginning) that automatically updates on each item save by corresponding event. You should use that field.
Once done, sync all existing items to apply that bucketing items paths.
Handle item:saved event
Within item:saved event handler: unbucket that particular item and re-bucket that item again (with item:unbucket and item:bucket commands)
Your that particular item will be bucketed implementing your bucketing path rule.
Hope that helps!
Building on some of the answers, here's the most readable / performant solution for most use cases:
using Sitecore.Buckets.Extensions;
using Sitecore.Buckets.Managers;
using Sitecore.Data.Events;
using Sitecore.Diagnostics;
using System;
using Sitecore.Data.Items;
using Sitecore.Events;
namespace XXXX.Project.Web.Infrastructure.Pipelines
{
public class MoveItemIntoBucketOnSave
{
public void OnItemSaved(object sender, EventArgs args)
{
Assert.IsNotNull(sender, "sender is null");
Assert.IsNotNull(args, "args is null");
var savedItem = Event.ExtractParameter(args, 0) as Item;
if (savedItem == null || savedItem.Database.Name.ToLower() != "master" || !savedItem.IsItemBucketable())
{
return;
}
// WARNING: see update below about EventDisabler
using (new EventDisabler())
{
if (!BucketManager.IsItemContainedWithinBucket(savedItem))
{
return;
}
var bucketItem = savedItem.GetParentBucketItemOrParent();
if (!bucketItem.IsABucket())
{
return;
}
// If you want to sync the entire bucket
// BucketManager.Sync(bucketItem);
BucketManager.MoveItemIntoBucket(savedItem, bucketItem);
}
}
}
}
I'm not worried about there being any empty bucket folders after this operation since they will be cleaned up during a full bucket sync, and content authors would not typically be traversing the bucket tree as they should be using search.
Here's the config:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration xmlns:patch="http://www.sitecore.net/xmlconfig/">
<sitecore>
<events>
<event name="item:saved">
<handler type="XXXX.Project.Web.Infrastructure.Pipelines.MoveItemIntoBucketOnSave, XXXX.Project.Web" method="OnItemSaved" />
</event>
</events>
</sitecore>
</configuration>
UPDATE: I do not recommend using the EventDisabler. If you add a new page and then try to add a rendering to the page and specify a datasource for it, the datasource locations won't resolve because Sitecore still thinks the path of newly created item is a direct child of the bucket item, rather than wherever the item was moved to within the bucket. See this question for more information.
UPDATE 2:
Note that this method will get called twice when a new bucketed item is created. You should think very carefully about what this means for you, and if you should add any other checks prior to calling any other code within this method.
You can achieve this by programmatically moving the bucketed item to the root of the bucket with the BucketManager. Doing this will force it to reevaluate the bucket rules and reorganize it:
BucketManager.MoveItemIntoBucket(bucketedItem, bucketItem);
Note that this is different from BucketManager.Sync(bucketItem) because it does not sync the whole bucket, but instead handles just the single item that was changed.
In our solutions, we typically create an item:saved event handler to do this automatically:
using Sitecore.Buckets.Managers;
using Sitecore.Buckets.Util;
using Sitecore.Data;
using Sitecore.Data.Items;
using Sitecore.Events;
using System;
using System.Text.RegularExpressions;
namespace Custom.Events.ItemSaved
{
public class ReorganizeBucketedItemInBucket
{
public void OnItemSaved(object sender, EventArgs args)
{
var bucketedItem = Event.ExtractParameter(args, 0) as Item;
// If we don't have an item or we're not saving in the master DB, ignore this save
if (bucketedItem == null || !"master".Equals(bucketedItem.Database?.Name, StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase))
return;
if (!bucketedItem.TemplateID.Equals(new ID("{bucketed-item-template-id}"))) return;
var itemChanges = Event.ExtractParameter(args, 1) as ItemChanges;
// If there were no changes or the changes didn't include the date field, ignore this save
if (itemChanges == null || !itemChanges.HasFieldsChanged || !itemChanges.IsFieldModified(new ID("{field-id-of-date-field}")))
return;
Item bucketItem = bucketedItem.Axes.SelectSingleItem($"{EscapePath(bucketedItem.Paths.FullPath)}/ancestor-or-self::*[##templateid = '{{bucket-container-template-id}}']");
// If this item isn't in a bucket (or is in a bucket of another, unexpected type), ignore it
if (bucketItem == null) return;
Item parent = bucketedItem.Parent;
BucketManager.MoveItemIntoBucket(bucketedItem, bucketItem);
// Delete empty ancestor bucket folders
while (parent != null && !parent.HasChildren && parent.TemplateID == BucketConfigurationSettings.BucketTemplateId)
{
Item tempParent = parent.Parent;
parent.Delete();
parent = tempParent;
}
}
/// <summary>
/// Wraps each segment of a sitecore path with "#"'s
/// </summary>
public string EscapePath(string path)
{
return Regex.Replace(path, #"([^/]+)", "#$1#").Replace("#*#", "*");
}
}
}
And don't forget your patch config, of course:
<configuration xmlns:patch="http://www.sitecore.net/xmlconfig/">
<sitecore>
<events>
<event name="item:saved">
<handler type="Custom.Events.ItemSaved.ReorganizeBucketedItemInBucket, Custom.Events" method="OnItemSaved"></handler>
</event>
</events>
</sitecore>
</configuration>
You'll need to implement a pipeline processor.
You can do this by adding the following into a .config file in your App_Code/Include folder.
<processors>
<saveUI>
<processor mode="on" type="Namespace.ClassName, Your.Assembly" patch:after="processor[last()]" />
</saveUI>
</processor
You'll also need to implement that class - there's nothing special about it except that it must have a public Process method with a Sitecore.Pipelines.Save.SaveArgs parameter.
namespace CustomFunctions
{
public class SaveAction
{
public void Process(SaveArgs args)
{
// There's a collection of items
// I'm not sure what the situation where there's more than one item is though.
var items = args.SavedItems;
var bucket = SomeFunctionToGetParent(items);
BucketManager.Sync(items);
}
}
}
I've never actually implemented this, but I think my code should give you an idea of how to get started - though this pipeline processor would be called every time an item is saved, so you need efficient checking to make sure that the item needs to have your bucket syncing processor used.
Hopefully someone here is familiar with creating customizations in Epicor 9. I've posted this to the Epicor forums as well, but unfortunately that forum seems pretty dead. Any help I can get would be much appreciated.
I've created a customization on the Order Entry form to display and store some extra information about our orders. One such field is the architect on the job. We store the architects in the customer table using a GroupCode of AR to distinguish them from regular customers. I have successfully added a button that launches a customer search dialog and filters the results to only display the architects (those with GroupCode AR). Here's where the problems come in. I have two questions:
1: On the customer search, there is a customer type field that defaults to a value of Customer. Other choices are < all>, Suspect, or Prospect. How can I make the search form default to < all>?
2: How do I take the architect (customer) I select through the search dialog and populate its CustID into the ShortChar01 field on my Order Entry customization? Here's the code I have:
private void SearchOnCustomerAdapterShowDialog()
{
// Wizard Generated Search Method
// You will need to call this method from another method in custom code
// For example, [Form]_Load or [Button]_Click
bool recSelected;
//string whereClause = string.Empty;
string whereClause = "GroupCode = 'AR'";
System.Data.DataSet dsCustomerAdapter = Epicor.Mfg.UI.FormFunctions.SearchFunctions.listLookup(this.oTrans, "CustomerAdapter", out recSelected, true, whereClause);
if (recSelected)
{
System.Data.DataRow adapterRow = dsCustomerAdapter.Tables[0].Rows[0];
// Map Search Fields to Application Fields
EpiDataView edvOrderHed = ((EpiDataView)(this.oTrans.EpiDataViews["OrderHed"]));
System.Data.DataRow edvOrderHedRow = edvOrderHed.CurrentDataRow;
if ((edvOrderHedRow != null))
{
edvOrderHedRow.BeginEdit();
edvOrderHedRow["ShortChar01"] = adapterRow["CustID"];
edvOrderHedRow.EndEdit();
}
}
}
When I select a record and click OK, I get an unhandled exception.
I think the problem you are/were having is that you aren't adding the CustNum to the Sales Order first. In my mind I would do it this way first, but there is might be ChangeCustomer BO method in oTrans that you could call to make sure everything defaults correct.
EpiDataView edvOrderHed = ((EpiDataView)(this.oTrans.EpiDataViews["OrderHed"]));
if (edvOrderHed.HasRow)
{
edvOrderHed[edvOrderHed.Row].BeginEdit();
edvOrderHed[edvOrderHed.Row]["CustNum"] = adapterRow["CustNum"];
edvOrderHed[edvOrderHed.Row]["ShortChar01"] = adapterRow["CustID"];
edvOrderHed[edvOrderHed.Row].EndEdit();
}
Hope that is helpful, even if late.
Is there any way to parametise the Datasource for the 'source' field in the Template Builder?
We have a multisite setup. As part of this it would save a lot of time and irritation if we could point our Droptrees and Treelists point at the appropriate locations rather than common parents.
For instance:
Content
--Site1
--Data
--Site2
--Data
Instead of having to point our site at the root Content folder I want to point it at the individual data folders, so I want to do something like:
DataSource=/sitecore/content/$sitename/Data
I can't find any articles on this. Is it something that's possible?
Not by default, but you can use this technique to code your datasources:
http://newguid.net/sitecore/2013/coded-field-datasources-in-sitecore/
You could possibly use relative paths if it fits with the rest of your site structure. It could be as simple as:
./Data
But if the fields are on random items all over the tree, that might not be helpul.
Otherwise try looking at:
How to use sitecore query in datasource location? (dynamic datasouce)
You might want to look at using a Querable Datasource Location and plugging into the getRenderingDatasource pipeline.
It's really going to depend on your use cases. The thing I like about this solution is there is no need to create a whole bunch of controls which effectively do he same thing as the default Sitecore ones, and you don't have to individually code up each datasource you require - just set the query you need to get the data. You can also just set the datasource query in the __standard values for the templates.
This is very similar to Holger's suggestion, I just think this code is neater :)
Since Sitecore 7 requires VS 2012 and our company isn't going to upgrade any time soon I was forced to find a Sitecore 6 solution to this.
Drawing on this article and this one I came up with this solution.
public class SCWTreeList : TreeList
{
protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e)
{
if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(Source))
this.Source = SourceQuery.Resolve(SContext.ContentDatabase.Items[ItemID], Source);
base.OnLoad(e);
}
}
This creates a custom TreeList control and passes it's Source field through to a class to handle it. All that class needs to do is resolve anything you have in the Source field into a sitecore query path which can then be reassigned to the source field. This will then go on to be handled by Sitecore's own query engine.
So for our multi-site solution it enabled paths such as this:
{A588F1CE-3BB7-46FA-AFF1-3918E8925E09}/$sitename
To resolve to paths such as this:
/sitecore/medialibrary/Product Images/Site2
Our controls will then only show items for the correct site.
This is the method that handles resolving the GUIDs and tokens:
public static string Resolve(Item item, string query)
{
// Resolve tokens
if (query.Contains("$"))
{
MatchCollection matches = Regex.Matches(query, "\\$[a-z]+");
foreach (Match match in matches)
query = query.Replace(match.Value, ResolveToken(item, match.Value));
}
// Resolve GUIDs.
MatchCollection guidMatches = Regex.Matches(query, "^{[a-zA-Z0-9-]+}");
foreach (Match match in guidMatches)
{
Guid guid = Guid.Parse(match.Value);
Item queryItem = SContext.ContentDatabase.GetItem(new ID(guid));
if (item != null)
query = query.Replace(match.Value, queryItem.Paths.FullPath);
}
return query;
}
Token handling below, as you can see it requires that any item using the $siteref token is inside an Site Folder item that we created. That allows us to use a field which contains the name that all of our multi-site content folders must follow - Site Reference. As long at that naming convention is obeyed it allows us to reference folders within the media library or any other shared content within Sitecore.
static string ResolveToken(Item root, string token)
{
switch (token)
{
case "$siteref":
string sRef = string.Empty;
Item siteFolder = root.Axes.GetAncestors().First(x => x.TemplateID.Guid == TemplateKeys.CMS.SiteFolder);
if (siteFolder != null)
sRef = siteFolder.Fields["Site Reference"].Value;
return sRef;
}
throw new Exception("Token '" + token + "' is not recognised. Please disable wishful thinking and try again.");
}
So far this works for TreeLists, DropTrees and DropLists. It would be nice to get it working with DropLinks but this method does not seem to work.
This feels like scratching the surface, I'm sure there's a lot more you could do with this approach.
I am creating items on the fly via Sitecore Web Service. So far I can create the items from this function:
AddFromTemplate
And I also tried this link: http://blog.hansmelis.be/2012/05/29/sitecore-web-service-pitfalls/
But I am finding it hard to access the fields. So far here is my code:
public void CreateItemInSitecore(string getDayGuid, Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleDataReader reader)
{
if (getDayGuid != null)
{
var sitecoreService = new EverBankCMS.VisualSitecoreService();
var addItem = sitecoreService.AddFromTemplate(getDayGuid, templateIdRTT, "Testing", database, myCred);
var getChildren = sitecoreService.GetChildren(getDayGuid, database, myCred);
for (int i = 0; i < getChildren.ChildNodes.Count; i++)
{
if (getChildren.ChildNodes[i].InnerText.ToString() == "Testing")
{
var getItem = sitecoreService.GetItemFields(getChildren.ChildNodes[i].Attributes[0].Value, "en", "1", true, database, myCred);
string p = getChildren.ChildNodes[i].Attributes[0].Value;
}
}
}
}
So as you can see I am creating an Item and I want to access the Fields for that item.
I thought that GetItemFields will give me some value, but finding it hard to get it. Any clue?
My advice would be to not use the VSS (Visual Sitecore Service), but write your own service specifically for the thing you want it to do.
This way is usually more efficient because you can do exactly the thing you want, directly inside the service, instead of making a lot of calls to the VSS and handle your logic on the clientside.
For me, this has always been a better solution than using the VSS.
I am assuming you are looking to find out what the fields looks like and what the field IDs are.
You can call GetXml with the ID, it returns the item and all the versions and fields set in it, it won't show fields you haven't set.
I installed and configured the Poll Module to work fine. The website I am working on will have a Poll instance on a page either as a left rail or a right rail item. The Polls would be setup in a separate folder. On the page item there will be a multilist field which will point to the Polls folder and the user can select whichever poll they choose to. The folder will also contain different sublayouts which will could be selected to be displayed on the rail. I have some custom code which will look at the above mentioned multilist field and show these rail items.
I don't know how to display a Poll programmatically. I haven't found any code samples and also not sure where to set the sublayout. Should I set it on the Poll template itself and then let use code to display it? How can I achieve this in code? Any code samples would be helpful.
Hoping that you will this time accept the answer, I wrote the following for you (based on the OMS Poll module:
Read out the field on your item:
Sitecore.Data.Fields.ReferenceField selectedPoll = (Sitecore.Data.Fields.ReferenceField)Sitecore.Context.Item.Fields["Poll"];
Get the pollItem:
if (selectedPoll.TargetItem != null)
{
Item pollItem = selectedPoll.TargetItem;
if (pollItem != null)
{
Check if the poll is opened or closed and place:
Sitecore.Data.Fields.CheckboxField pollClosed = (Sitecore.Data.Fields.CheckboxField)pollItem.Fields["Closed"];
if (pollClosed.Checked == false)
{
// Set the header of the snippetBlock
ltPollHeader.Text = pollItem.Name;
PollVotingSublayout pollSublayout = (PollVotingSublayout)LoadControl("/sitecore modules/Shell/Poll Module/Controls/PollVotingSublayout.ascx");
pollSublayout.Attributes.Add("sc_parameters", "PollPath=" + pollItem.Paths.FullPath);
pollSublayout.CurrentPoll = (PollItem)pollItem;
this.pollRegion.Controls.Add(pollSublayout);
phPollSnippet.Visible = true;
int blockPos = 0;
if (snippetField != null)
{
if (snippetField.GetItems().Any())
{
blockPos = 1;
}
}
string cssClass = String.Empty;
if (blockPos == 0)
{
cssClass = "snippetColHomeFirst";
}
this.SetClass("snippetColHome", cssClass);
}
Hope that you can make up something using this snippets. Good luck!
There should be a user account called "poll" on the sitecore domain. This account is normally used internal by the poll. In the comment of this account is stated: "Please do not remove this account". the account should have the Sitecore Minimal Page Editor role. I don't know the poll user credentials, but you might find that by either using reflector or opening cs files that you can get by downloading the source.
