VS 2010 C++ cannot load msobj100.dll in Release mode - c++

I have a fairly simple C++ project in Visual C++ 2010 Express on Windows 7. I have no problems compiling in Debug mode for Win32, but when I switch to Release mode for Win32 I get the following compiler error:
LINK : fatal error LNK1296: unable to load msobj100.dll
I know this question has been asked here, but I couldn't get a fix from that solution. I did a search for that file, and it is only located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE. Within SysWOW64 and Win32, there are files called 'msobjs.dll', but that's it. Any ideas?

Try to install the Windows SDK to your computer. These Files Should be distributed.Along with it.

VC\Bin is the runtime path.
This problem also bothered me for a long time, and I had to run Release mode in another machine...

I recently installed Visual Studio 2017 and need to change something in a C++ project.
But when I try to build, it says cl.exe is missing. None of the solutions provided online seem to work.
I do have a cl.exe, but it is located under this path:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise\VC\Tools\MSVC\14.10.25017\bin\HostX64\x64
I have also tried running vcvars32.bat, but that does not seem to make any changes.
And I have installed 'Desktop development with C++'.
I solved it by running vcvars.bat.
For Visual Studio Enterprise 2017 it is located under the following directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise\Common7\Tools\vsdevcmd\ext

How to run Code Analysis on x64 Project in Visual C++?

I am trying to run the code analysis of Visual Studio 2015 on my x64 VC++ project. However I get the following error:
Error C1250 Unable to load plug-in 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\VC\\bin\localespc.dll'
I am activating the x64 toolset of Visual Studio by running the batch script "vcvarsall.bat amd64" before I start the IDE. Visual Studio is run with the "/useenv" option afterwards.
When I check the VC++ environment variables, I can see that the following path is contained in the PATH variable:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\VC\BIN\amd64
How can I tell Visual Studio to use the code analyzer (localespc.dll) from there and not the x86 version which it apparently tries to use (according to the error message).

I was having the same issue with my 64-bit C++ projects. I discovered simply renaming/removing localespc.dll from VC\bin allowed the Code Analysis builds to succeed and still report analysis warnings. It seems if VS doesn't find this dll in the VC\bin directory then it won't add the compiler switch for /analyze:plugin but otherwise passes all the other switches required by the Code Analysis.
Set the following property in your project file: <PreferredToolArchitecture>x64</PreferredToolArchitecture>
This tells Visual Studio to use the 64-bit version of various tools, including code analysis. I found How to make Visual Studio use the native amd64 toolchain helpful on the topic.
Note that renaming localespc.dll no longer solves the problem with Visual Studio 2017. It seems that setting PreferredToolArchitecture is Microsoft's intended way to do this.

how to fix: error LNK1123: failure during conversion to COFF: file invalid or corrupt [duplicate]

I've installed Visual Studio 2012 Release Preview, and it appears to be fine, but now when I try to use Visual Studio 2010 to compile C++ projects, I get the following error message:
LINK : fatal error LNK1123: failure during conversion to COFF: file invalid or corrupt
I'm not 100% sure of this, but it seems to be related to projects that have .rc (resource) files in them.
I've tried repairing Visual Studio 2010 from Add/Remove programs and rebooting, but this has no effect.
I also get the same error if I use Visual Studio 2012 RC to compile the C++ projects when set to use the Visual Studio 2010 toolset. Upgrading to the Visual Studio 2011 toolset fixes the problem (but of course I don't want to do this for production code).
Update: I've uninstalled Visual Studio 2012, rebooted, and the problem still persists! Help!

To summarize:
Either disable incremental linking, by going to
Project Properties
-> Configuration Properties
-> Linker (General)
-> Enable Incremental Linking -> "No (/INCREMENTAL:NO)"
or install VS2010 SP1.
Edits (#CraigRinger): Note that installing VS 2010 SP1 will remove the 64-bit compilers. You need to install the VS 2010 SP1 compiler pack to get them back.
This affects Microsoft Windows SDK 7.1 for Windows 7 and .NET 4.0 as well as Visual Studio 2010.
If disabling incremental linking doesn't work for you, and turning off "Embed Manifest" doesn't work either, then search your path for multiple versions of CVTRES.exe.
By debugging with the /VERBOSE linker option I found the linker was writing that error message when it tried to invoke cvtres and it failed.
It turned out that I had two versions of this utility in my path. One at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\BIN\cvtres.exe and one at C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\cvtres.exe. After VS2012 install, the VS2010 version of cvtres.exe will no longer work. If that's the first one in your path, and the linker decides it needs to convert a .res file to COFF object format, the link will fail with LNK1123.
(Really annoying that the error message has nothing to do with the actual problem, but that's not unusual for a Microsoft product.)
Just delete/rename the older version of the utility, or re-arrange your PATH variable, so that the version that works comes first.
Be aware that for x64 tooling builds you may also have to check C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\bin\amd64 where there is another cvtres.exe.
Check the version of cvtrs.exe:

This way, you will effectively use the corrected version of cvtres.exe which is 11.0.51106.1.
Repeat the same steps for 64-bit version of the tool in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\bin\amd64\cvtres.exe.
This solution is an alternative to installation of SP1 for VS2010 - in some cases you simply can't install SP1 (i.e. if you need to support pre-SP1 builds).
If you have installed Visual Studio 2012 RC, then it installed .NET 4.5 RC.
Uninstall .NET 4.5 RC, and install the version you need (4.0 for VS 2010). This should clear up any problems you are having.
This solved the same problem. There is no need to uninstall Visual Studio.
It's because of .NET Framework 4.5 is replacing .NET Framework 4.0.
I uninstalled Visual Studio 2010 several times with no luck. When I removed .NET Framework 4.5 and reinstalled Visual Studio 2010 it went fine.

For me, setting 'Generate Manifest' to 'No' fixed it. (Also fixed with /INCREMENTAL:NO)

This happens because Microsoft .NET 4.5 is incompatible with Visual C++ 10. The workaround is to ensure that you run the .NET version of cvtres.exe rather than the Visual C++ version. I did this by renaming the Visual C++ versions of those files and copying the .NET versions in their place.

I solved this problem eventually by doing a full uninstall of VS2012 RC, followed by a full uninstall of VS2010, then a reinstall from scratch of VS2010.
It took forever, but I'm now able to compile C++ projects in VS2010 again.
The issue was magically resolved for me by removing .NET 4.5, and replacing it with .NET 4.0. I then had to repair Visual Studio 2010 - it being corrupted along the way somehow.
I had previously installed, and then un-installed, Visual Studio 2012 - which may be related to the issue.
I have not installed Visual Studio 2012, but I still got this error in Visual Studio 2010. I got this resolved after installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1.
I had the same problem with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and it was solved by the method described in this youtube video
The video suggests to rename the file cvtres.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\bin (in my Win7X64 matchine) to cvtres-old.exe
It didn't work for me after Enable Incremental Linking -> "No (/INCREMENTAL:NO)", but it works for me after I deleted the rc file.

I tried to do some debugging of this with msbuild /v:diag, and I'm seeing that MSBuild is trying to embed a manifest in the executable, with <somename>.dll.embed.manifest.res on the linker command line, where that is a resource file built from <somename>.dll.embed.manifest. But the manifest file is an empty Unicode text file. (That is, a two-byte file with the Unicode 0xFEFF prefix)
So the root problem seems to have something to do with that manifest file not being generated, or it being used when <somename>.dll.intermediate.manifest should have been used.
An alternate solution seems to be to turn off the "Embed Manifest" option under Properties, Manifest Tool, Input and Output.

As of January 2014, for some reasons I got installed .NET Framework 4.5.1, I don't know if due to a third party software installation or to an automatic update.
On January 29th, I got installed one component and I started receiving the
LINK : fatal error LNK1123: failure during conversion to COFF: file invalid or corrupt
message. At that time, I solved by avoiding the incremental link.
On Jan. 31st, I got installed another component of .NET Framework 4.5.1 and the incremental link trick did not work anymore. I then installed the Visual Studio 2010 SP1, but afterwards the problem became:
Error 6 error LNK1104: cannot open file 'msvcrtd.lib'.
I think the SP1 messed up my Visual Studio 2010 installation.
So I uninstalled .NET Framework 4.5.1, installed .NET Framework 4.0 and uninstalled and then reinstalled Visual Studio 2010. That worked for me.
Even inspite of installing Service pack you are getting the error then try removing/renaming the cvtres.exe in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\bin folder. This has worked for me.
I set Enable Incremental Linking to "No (/INCREMENTAL:NO)" and it doesn't work for me.
Next I've changed:
Project Properties
-> Configuration Properties
-> General
-> Platform Toolset -> "Visual Studio 2012 (v110)"

Reinstalling CMake worked for me. The new copy of CMake figured out that it should use Visual Studio 11 instead of 10.
I was using the Windows SDK for core Win32 programming and had .NET 4.5 installed for "unknown" reasons. I have uninstalled that and installed 4.0 like previous answers and yeah, it worked for me too.
Just am flabbergasted that I had to use the useless .NET framework for building Win32 apps using the SDK.
I solved this by doing the following:
In a command prompt, type msconfig and press enter.
Click services tab.
Look for "Application Experience" and put tick mark (that is, select this to enable).
Click OK. And restart if necessary.
Thus the problem will go forever. Do build randomly and debug your C++ projects without any disturbance.
For those of you looking for a solution for this problem with the OpenGL SuperBible 6th source code samples, the solution is building in Release instead of Debug. All projects have disabled the incremental linking option in the Release version.
My problem was that I've had two paths on my PC that contained the same libraries. Both paths were added to the Additional Library Directories in Configuration Properties -> Linker -> General. Removing one of the paths solved the problem.
I had the same problem after updating of .NET:
I uninstalled the .NET framework first,
downloaded visual studio from visualstudio.com and selected "repair".
NET framework were installed automatically with visual studio -> and now it works fine!
I tried a few times and finally solved the problem by uninstalling several times the VS2010. I think I hadn't uninstalled all the files and that's why it didn't work for the first time.
In the installation of VS2012, it is said that if you have VS2010 SP1 you can't work on the same project in both programs. It is recommended to have only one program.

How to make Visual Studio use the native amd64 toolchain

How can I get Visual Studio 2012 to use the native amd64 toolchain, rather than the default x86_amd64 cross-compiler?
I am building a large library that causes the linker to run out of memory when doing whole program optimization and link-time code generation.
I found two older posts (here and here) asking this same question, but no answers yet. Microsoft provides documentation on how to specify the toolchain on the command line, but not in the IDE.
There is another method of forcing use of the 64-bit linker on a per-project basis for Visual Studio 2013. Edit your .vcxproj file and insert the following after the <Import...Microsoft.Cpp.Defaults line:
<Import Project="$(VCTargetsPath)\Microsoft.Cpp.Default.props" />
<PropertyGroup>
<PreferredToolArchitecture>x64</PreferredToolArchitecture>

You need to set the environment variable "_IsNativeEnvironment" to "true" prior to starting Visual Studio 2012 IDE:

For Visual Studio 2013, the name of the environment variable is different:

Beware that this technique does not work if the version of the IDE does not match the version of the toolchain. That is, if you use VS2013 IDE configured to run VS2012 compiler, you are out of luck. But such combination is uncommon.

If your goal is to use the native environment rather than specifically amd64_x86, you can set the UseNativeEnvironment property in your project file:

I know this is a rather old post, but it's still relevant for VS 2017. Here you also have the "PreferredToolArchitecture" environment variable and a "build in" setting in the IDE is not readily available.
However you can integrate that easily on a project by project base so that you can always chose what tool architecture to use. Maybe this is helpful for some. Do this:
Go to Property Manager and create a new property sheet, e. g. named "x64 Toolchain.props" so you know what it does. With a separate property sheet you can then switch the tool architecture as appropriate by including or not including the sheet into a project.
Open the properties of that new sheet, navigate to "Common Properties\User Macros" and click "Add Macro".
In the dialog you set the name to "PreferredToolArchitecture", the value to "x64" and enable the checkbox "Set this macro as an environment variable in the build environment".
Optionally navigate to "Common Properties\C/C++\Command Line" and add "/Bv" under "Additional Options". This will make the compiler output the tools it uses including its path and version number, might be helpful for checking if really the desired architecture is being used. It will place entries in the log output window like so:

Now for all projects that should be build with the x64 tool architecture include the new property sheet into the project in property manager. And for those that should not simply don't include it. That's it.

I have a similar problem using Visual Studio 2010 on XP 64 SP2. If I set the VC++ executable directory to the amd64 bin (the native x64 folder) as the first in the search path, then I received the TRK0002 error … Invalid handle value.
But if I set _IsNativeEnvironment=true in a Visual Studio 2010 command prompt and start the ide from the command line as posted before, then the error goes away. Apparently, the 32-bit GUI IDE Environment is receiving info from a 64 bit process and is expecting info from a 32-bit process such as x86\cl.exe or x86_64\cl.exe.
In a scenario where you want to compile an IA64 bit executable, and you use the x86_ia64\cl.exe compiler. Since you are using a 32-bit cross compiler and have the _IsNativeEnvironment variable set to true, this must upset the IDE when posting messages in it's window consoles. Set the _IsNativeEnvironment=false, if you have previously set it to true.
The IDE should pick up that a native compiler was being used on a native 64-bit
machine and should have automatically set this variable to the appropriate value when the native compiler was selected from the IDE. A simple fix has never been applied to patch this problem. Solution. Do it yourself from the prompt, or buy the latest IDE from Microsoft to fix the problem.
So, the real wizards at Microsoft are the developers who work mainly from the command line. And the other developers, who wear the pointy hats and sit in the corner, must have been hired from Apple and were more concerned about appearance than function.
The whole purpose of an IDE is to make coding simple, not more complicated than using a text editor and a Makefile from the command line.

C++ #include <atlbase.h> is not found

When I compile my C++ program in Visual Studio Express it says that it can't find atlbase.h. Am I missing some SDK or something?
Visual Studio 2017
When running the Visual Studio Installer, select the Individual components tab, and under SDKs, libraries, and frameworks make sure Visual C++ ATL Support is selected.
It is included with the Windows Driver Kit Version 7.1.0.
Microsoft ATL (Active Template Library), which includes the header atlbase.h is included with the Windows 2003 SDK, but it is not included with any newer Windows SDK release. It is also included with Professional editions of Visual Studio.
Solution for Visual Studio 2017 Express edition
I had the same error when building a COM C++ project in Visual Studio 2017 Express edition. As mentioned by several users here, ATL support is not included with the Express edition of Visual Studio. So to build a C++ COM/ATL project you need at least the Community edition.
If you really need to use the Express edition, you can download and install the Build Tools for Visual Studio 2017. Make sure to enable the 'Visual C++ ATL for x86 and x64' component during the setup.
After that add additional VC++ directories in the project properties:
Include directories: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\BuildTools\VC\Tools\MSVC\14.14.26428\atlmfc\include
Library directories: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\BuildTools\VC\Tools\MSVC\14.14.26428\atlmfc\lib\x86
The VC++ compiler should now be able to find the ATL source and library files.
For users of Visual Studio 2015, ensure Common Tools for C++ is installed (part of the VS installer).
Situation
With Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition, we installed "Visual C++ ATL support" and MFC and ATL support. The error still occurred in our x64 project.
Solution
We fixed some paths with the following two commands:

Details
We eventually found the header atlbase.h in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\VC\Tools\MSVC\14.11.25503\atlmfc\include. This path simply was not added to the VC Include directory by vsvars32.bat, so the header was not found during build.
vsvars32.bat includes the following line:
#if exist "%VCINSTALLDIR%ATLMFC\INCLUDE" set INCLUDE=%VCINSTALLDIR%ATLMFC\INCLUDE;%INCLUDE%`.
This resolved to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\VC\atlmfc\include in our machine.
We created a directory junction, so the build tool finds atlbase.h in the expected directory (this is the first command from the Solution section above):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\VC>mklink /d atlmfc "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\VC\Tools\MSVC\14.11.25503\atlmfc"
Afterwards, the linker did not find atls.lib (see Cannot Open File atls.lib). This was due to the expected file structure was that lib should directly contain the x86 version of the libs and lib\amd64 should contain the x64 variants. Instead, lib\x86 contained the x86 versions and lib\x64 contained the 64 bit versions. Since we build a 64 bit project, creating another directory junk from amd64 to x64 solved the problem:

That header appears to be a part of the Windows Platform SDK.
You should search your computer for the file. That will tell you if you're missing it.
I had same problem with sample project. I specified the sample project's properties and the sample project compiled successfully.
Visual Studio 8

I have not yet seen anyone mention Visual Studio 2015 (MSBuild 14.0). In this case I've had to download Visual C++ BuildTools (found here: https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/older-downloads/). After having installed this, running the installer again allowed me to modify the installation and include the ATL libs.
Hope this helps anyone that is still using MSBuild 14.0
