I'd like to allow embedded youtube videos (and other commonly embedded media) to be displayed using Django. Is there anyway in Django to allow this to happen?
The context is that I'm trying to display rss items, which may or may not have one or more embedded videos in a given item. Using the "safe" filter discards them, and writing a custom filter that returns mark_safe(html), where "html" is the passed through item, also discards them. Is there anyway to get past this?
Would you have to pull out the embedded objects from the rss items from within the view, and then re-embed them inside the template?
While I'm new to Django, I've done a fair amount of searching on this topic, and haven't found a useful answer yet. Any help would be much appreciated.
I figured out the answer to this question... I was using feedparser, which was removing certain content. I ended up adding a monkey patch (I believe this is the correct term) to allow more material make it through:
feedparser._HTMLSanitizer.acceptable_elements.add("object")
feedparser._HTMLSanitizer.acceptable_elements.add("embed")
feedparser._HTMLSanitizer.acceptable_elements.add("iframe")
Use django-embed-video. It provides you all functionality you need.

i'm new in cakephp and I have started with version 3. I want to build a beautifull app and because I'm not good in design, I would really like to use a free template or buy one that I can use within cakephp.
So, I would really appreciate all your propositions and ideas or best practises. The easy way will be the best because I don't have a lot of time with this project. Thank you in advance.
If you don't have a lot of time like you mentioned, the easiest way to go ahead and get started is to paste a lot of the code in your default.ctp layout inside of src/Template/Layout/default.ctp.
You'll notice there are some lines of PHP already in there that are relevant to fetching blocks of css, meta tags, and other bits of code that could potentially exist throughout your project.
Find the main layout of the theme your trying to use - the one that will be consistent across most of the pages. That's the one you'll use for default.ctp. Compare what's already in default.ctp and make the comparable adjustments around the HTML in that document while keeping the important lines of PHP there as well.
For other important pages like a login or registration page, just create a new document for those, like 'login.ctp', then inside the function that loads the page (maybe 'login' inside of UsersController'), change the default layout with this line of code:
$this->viewBuilder()->layout('login'); // without the .ctp ending
This way you can create one-off layouts that don't really match any other page.
I am attempting to write a Redmine plugin which further filters textilizable fields (issue description, updates, wiki content, etc.).
I've leafed around the plugin documentation but did not really find a good place to start. The view hooks seem to allow you to inject content at pre-defined injection points. Nothing really stood out toward creating a filter for textilizable content.
The most straightforward way is to hack the code in application_helper.rb and create your own filter function along the same lines of the :parse_inline_attachments, :parse_wiki_links, :parse_redmine_links. However, I do not see a good way of inserting that in a plugin without monkey patching the entirety of textilizable(*args).
Am I missing something obvious here?

This board topic mentions the caveats associated with view hooks (mentioned above) and offers a workaround or two that lets you change content by overriding views.
What I am trying to create is a site for resources. Basically, you add resources such as books and videos via links. Now, with any resource site that caters to a variety of resources, you need to tag them in order to understand what kind of resource you are using.
For example, if you make notes on something like Chemistry or key points from a talk on lets say "Django", then these are text documents. Thus you would want them inside a TEXT TAG.
So, when you are making a form for this kind of thing, what form field would you use? For example, by knee-jerk approach is to simple make a text area field, and then separate the different tags via comma. Now, this can be prone to many problems, I'd just like to know what is the best approach to take to solving this problem? Basically, an easy way to validate the data input? Would forms.ChoiceField be the best approach to the problem or is there something else that is superior?

EDIT: The easiest way to display this in a form would be to use a ModelMultipleChoiceField. This allows you to select multiple tags for a single resource, and handles server-side validation and conversion to the actual Tag instances. However, I think most people would agree this option looks hideous, and it is certainly not user-friendly if there is a large amount of possible tags.
If you're using jQUery, another option is to use Django_select2. This is what I have personally used in a similar situation, and it handles a large amount of possible tags very well. Django_select2 is a thin wrapper around jQuery's Select2 plugin, with a bit of added functionality (most notably the AutoView and AutoModelSelect2Field). This provides a hybrid between a text field and a select list, allowing you to search all tags and easily select multiple tags. I'm looking at porting a custom-written PHP CMS into Django. One of the features the CMS currently has is an image upload function. I write an article, tag it with information, then choose a photo for it. If the system has any photos which have been added to articles with tags in common with the new one, it will suggest the photo for that article too. If there are no matches then a new image can be added.
In case this doesn't make sense, let's say I tag an article as Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Next time I add an article with the tag The Beatles, it should suggest I use the image added for the first article.
What would be the best Django-applicable way to implement this? I've looked at the Photologue app and have integrated it, and I know it has tagging support (the problem here is that I'm using django-taggit, whereas Photologue supports django-tagging). One approach could be simply building it myself -- when a user uploads an article, I run a hook after they save it to associate the tags with the image. I'm just not sure how to then autosuggest an image in the admin tools based on that info.
Any ideas/approaches greatly appreciated.
This is almost certainly something you're going to have to build yourself. Django has a moderate number of libraries out there (that you've clearly already found). Unlike other solutions, it doesn't have a lot of things that get you 100% to your desired solution (whereas something like Drupal might get you 100% of the way there).
What you will probably need to do (at a high level) is something like this:
Create an AJAX view that takes the current tags as an argument and does a query on the existing posts to see what tags match and returns images from those posts.
Use jQuery/javascript on your view to call your AJAX view on the page as tags are added
Use jQuery to update a <div> on your page and show all the images that your view returned
Here is a similar example that might help get you started.
You might look into django-ajax as a helper library for your requests, but it definitely isn't necessary.
The hook between the your image module and any other django module can be implemented using django's contenttypes framework which also provides some useful instance methods for returning related/hooked objects.
I'm developing a blog application using Django. Currently, the URL /blog/ displays the front page of the blog (the first five posts). Visitors can then browse or "page through" the blog entries. This portion is mapped to /blog/browse/{page}/, where page, of course, is an integer that specifies which "page" of blog entries should be displayed.
It's occurred to me, though, that perhaps the "page number" should be an attribute of the querystring instead (e.g., /blog/browse/?page=2), since the content of the browse pages is not static (i.e., as soon as I add another post, /blog/browse/2/ will have different contents than it had before the post was added). This seems to be the way sites like Stack Overflow and Reddit do things. For example, when paging through questions on Stack Overflow, a "page" attribute is used; likewise, Reddit uses a "count" attribute.
Extending this thinking, I realize that I use the same template to render the contents of both /blog/ and /blog/browse/, so it might even make sense to just use a URL like /blog/?page=2 to page through the contents of the blog.
Any suggestions? Is there a "standard" way of doing this, or at least a "best practice" method to use?
For my money, the best general purpose approach to this issue is to use the django-pagination utility. It's incredibly easy to use and your URLs should have the format you desire.
I prefer to use the GET URL parameter, as in URL?pg=#. It's very common and provides a standard visual clue to users about what is going on. If, for instance, I want to bookmark one of those pages or make an external link, I know without thinking that I can drop the pg parameter to point at the "latest" front-page index. With an embedded #, this isn't as obvious... do I leave off the parameter? Do I always have to set it to 1? Is it a different base URL entirely? To me, having pagination through the GET parameter makes for a slightly more sensible URL, since there's an acceptable default if the parameter is omitted and the parameter doesn't affect the base URL.
Also, while I can't prove it, it gives me the warm fuzzy feeling that Google has a better chance at figuring out the nature of that page's content (i.e. that it is a paginated index into further data, and will potentially update frequently) versus a page # embedded inside the URL, which will be more opaque.
That said, I'd say this is 99% personal preference and I highly doubt there's any real functional difference, so go with whatever is easier for and fits in better with your current way of doing things.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that my opinion is Django specific... I have a few Django apps so I'm relatively familiar with the way they build their URLs, and I still use a "pg" GET parameter with those apps rather than embedding it in the URL directly.
It seems like there are two things going on. A static page, that won't change and can be used for permalinking, like an article, as well as a dynamic page that will update frequently. There is no reason you cannot use both. URL rewriting should allow this to work quite nicely. There's no reason to let the implementation control the interface, there is always at least one way to skin every cat.
