How to link file with assets under Windows - c++

If you save any webpage under Windows, you will notice it creates a folder which is "linked" to the html file, like:
(file) Twitter.htm
(folder) Twitter_files
If you try to copy either file or folder, e.g. Twitter.htm, Twitter_files will also be copied along.
Can I achieve this functionality somehow? I am asking both as a plain Windows user and pro grammatically (e.g. a C++ API). I don't see any flag in the file properties to make them linked.

Adding a CSV file to a project in Visual Studio

I am working on a project where I have to read in serveral pre-existing CSV (dog.csv, horse.csv, etc.). I want to know how would I add these file into my project so that I may test to see if my print functions work (the code is written in c++). Would I have to copy and paste the files into the debugging folder or would I place it under the test folder of the project?
You can include the files in your project in whatever (sub)folder you wish by using Right click -> Add -> Existing Item. Then, right-click on each file and choose Properties. Set up "Copy to output directory" to "Copy if newer".
Then after build, your files will be copied into the bin/debug folder.
To read the file, you can just use:
System.IO.File.ReadAllText("dog.csv");
Another possible way is to add a file within project, right click and select properties, and then in Copy to Output Directory, select Copy always. This way, csv file will be automatically copied in your debug and release packages too.

Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location);
string csvLocation= Path.Combine(executableLocation, "file.csv");
Above code will read file location from bin directory where your csv file will be stored.

If you wanted to do a down and dirty way you could just save the CSV's somewhere on your local machine, and then hard code the file path to that location.
Example:
c:\test\Dog.csv and then set that as a variable for whenever you need to read in the csv file.

Make a Qt/C++ program show its file types as known on Windows

Using Qt 5.9 I codded a spreadsheet program and then created an installer for it by Qt Installer Framework (QtIFW2.0.1). Then I sent the program to many of my friends. They installed the app on their Windows machine and now using it, but they have all have a common problem:
when they save files of the app, those files are shown as "unknown" files on Desktop.
The problem is only with the shape and appearance of the stored files not their functionality, and they are opened by the app if double clicked.
The question is, what changes in the code is needed to have the program make its files' shape/appearance shown known?
For example, we offer the code a specific shape using an image file or like that, to be mapped on the stored files and that way they are shown known.
This has actually nothing to do with Qt or C++ itself. You just need to register your file extension in Windows shell, so it can be understood by other Windows components/shells.
Here is general information about File Types and File Associations under windows.
You need to make some Windows Registry entries which look like this:
example.reg:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\myfirm.myapp.v1\shell\open\command]
#="c:\path\to\your\app.exe \"%1\""
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.myextension]

Here you can read how it works in general
change myfirm.myapp.v1, .myextension and path to your .exe to your prefered names.
Now Windows will know what the files with extension .myextension should be opened by your app. And if you double click on this files your app will be run with path to file as an argument. You can get it in your main() function
To set icon for your extension add Registry entry in Software\\Classes\\.myextension\\DefaultIcon and set it default value to the full path to your app, so windows can get an icon for extension from your .exe app file.

How to write a file in to an OS X app Resources folder?

I have an xcode project, the used language is C++. while my program is running writes a txt file in to
My App.app/Contents/Resources/
folder using fstream. After a month pause don't work anymore. Nothing is modified on the project but the OS X is updated. The file path is ok, i can read the file. What is wrong?
You should not write into your app bundle, and instead use one of the following folders to store files, which can be obtained using NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains:
Document folder (NSDocumentDirectory).
Application Support folder (NSApplicationSupportDirectory).
Caches folder (NSCachesDirectory).
If you write to your app bundle you will cause issues with the code signing of the app and might not even have write access, if it's installed in the default location (/Applications).

Cant open html resource file using ifstream::open - Visual Studio 2013

I am working on a project which requires me to open an HTML file and use its contents. I added it to Resource files but when I try to open it lie this:
std::ifstream templateFile;
templateFile.open("filename.html", std::ifstream::in);
The operation fails. I checked it by using templateFile.fail().
The above operation works when I provide the full path. The file lies in the project folder along with other files. I tried setting build action to content but still it doesnt work. Please Help.
Output directory, where your executable is compiled and put into differs from the source directory, where you create all your .cpp/.hpp files (I assume there is filename.html file). Local path filename.html is supposed to be local for your executable file, not the source file.

Under Configuration Properties / Debugging, see what your Working Directory is using the macros dialog box. Move your file into this folder.
Click the button shown in the figure. There, click either Edit or Browse. Browse will take you to the working directory. Edit will expose the link to open the macros box

Relative path problem for a deployed win32 application

I have written a c++ program and deployed it in say c:\my_app, and my executable's path is c:\my_app\my_app.exe. Say, my_app needs many files such as the_file.txt, which is located in c:\my_app\the_file.txt.
In my executable, I open the txt file as, xx.open("the_file.txt");
Moreover, I have associated my program with let's say .myp extension.
When I'm on Desktop, and want to open a file named example.myp, my program can not see the_file.txt. Because, it (somehow) assumes that it's currently working on Desktop.
Is there any easy way to handle this problem by changing shell command for open in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT? The naive solution would be to change all file open operations with something like %my_app_location/the_file.txt". I don't want to do that.
Always use a full path name to open a file. In other words, don't open "foo.txt", open "c:\bar\foo.txt". To find the install directory of your EXE use GetModuleFileName(), passing NULL for the module handle.
These days you shouldn't add files to c:\my_app....
Instead use the ProgramData Folder and full paths.
Use SHGetSpecialFolderPathA with CSIDL_COMMON_APPDATA to get the ProgramData folder and the create your program directory and add your files.
You should set current directory for your app's folder with SetCurrentDirectory function. After that you can open file by name without full path
