opencv_highgui230.dll was not found - c++

I am creating an application by using opencv2.3 IN VC++2010 express addition. The build is successful but while compiling it says that 'opencv_highgui230.dll was not found.Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.' Though I have added all the necessary include and lib files.

It's likely that this DLL can be found in bin or similarly named directory under where you installed the OpenCV library. For Windows binary distributions of various libraries, the DLL is usually included.
For your program to load it, it either has to be in the same directory as the executable, in your system directory, usually C:\Windows\system32\, or I think that it is possible to specify the location programmatically, in your code. This MSDN article can tell you more.
Quick and, more likely then not, correct solution would be to copy the DLL into your executable's directory.

Because your application relies upon the library, you have to build the library first before you build your application. The error message is telling you that it can't find the binary file corresponding to your library, opencv_highgui230.dll, not one of the code files.
You can either configure Visual Studio to automatically build the projects in the correct order by setting up the appropriate project dependencies, or you can do it manually.

Missing libgcc_s_seh-1.dll starting the .exe on Windows

Intro
I have a CMake-based C++ project. Until now I build and ran the project via CLion. Everything worked fine until I tried to run the .exe-file directly (not via CLion).
Problem
When I navigate to the cmake build directory in order to start my program via the executable file, it fails with the following message in the popup: Cannot continue the code execution because libgcc_s so-1.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may resolve the issue.
I have the following questions
If I interpret the error message correctly, then this dll is missing on my computer. So I ask myself, why does my program still work when I start it via the development environment (CLion), although the error message expressly states that the source code requires this dll?
Is it the fault of my application/source code that the error appears or rather the current state of my computer? If the former, how can I prevent this error from appearing for other users?
What is the best way to fix this error? It's obvious that I need to download this dll, but where is the best place to put it (which directory and environment variable to use on Window)?
Which source is trustworthy to download this dll? I don't want to download any malware under this dll-name.
Optional: What kind of library is that? What functionalities does it offer?

I use CMake as my build tool, CLion as the IDE and MinGW as the compiler.
What I have did so far?
I made sure it still works through the IDE.
I found this dll does not exist in the MinGW installation folder.
I searched the web for more information. Unfortunately, there are only pages unknown to me that only offer the download of this dll. That doesn't satisfy me.
I found the cause of my problem: I had two MingGW installations on my machine. Once the installation that comes with CLion and a separate one. The latter did not have the required dll. However, CLion used its own installation, which in turn owns the DLL. So the solution was to remove the separate installation and include the path to the CLion installation's bin/ directory in the PATH environment variable.
This file is part of MinGW-w64 when using SEH as exception model (as opposed to Dwarf or SJLJ). You need to distribute the .dll files your .exe file(s) depend on in the same folder as the .exe file(s).
If you don't have that file, then you probably have been using libraries compiled with different versions of GCC/MinGW(-w64). I recommend building everything with the same compiler to ensure stable binaries.
Tools like Dependency Walker can help you figure out which .dll files your .exe file depends on.
Or use the command line tool copypedeps -r from https://github.com/brechtsanders/pedeps to copy the .exe files along with it's dependencies.

Starting an executable program that uses additional libs

I made a program with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. It uses additional libraries (Allegro), and it runs perfectly from MSVC, but I can't run it from it's directory. (...\"project name"\Debug\"project name".exe) It writes that it can't find some kind of .dll files.
That's not good, because I want to make it work for everyone! What to do to make it work?
I know that I have to put the necesarry .dll files, but I don't know where?
When an executable is started, Windows searches the current directory, the PATH and then some other places. The exact description can be found here
You need to make sure either the PATH includes the library you need, or place it in the same directory (or in some other automatically searced directory, but that's typically not a good solution).

Where to place and how to include dll files in c++ project?

I read this guide that walks you through the steps necessary to create a "visual" application with Cairo and Visual C++. The guide suggests you download certain dll files and store them in the directory in which your executable is created (debug).
Here is the list of the files Nil is referring to in his tutorial:
cairo Binaries (yes you need the binaries package too, as the Dev one doesn't contain the DLL) -> libcairo-2.dll
zlib Binaries -> zlib1.dll
libpng Binaries -> libpng12-0.dll
Freetype Binaries -> freetype6.dll
FontConfig Binaries -> libfontconfig-1.dll
expat Binaries -> libexpat-1.dll
As you can see, it's quite a lot of files. I've been wondering if this the "correct" way of doing this? Is there an alternative way that is considered "best-practice" in this case?
There's nothing wrong with this approach, and it's probably the quickest way to get your application up and running. Your application needs these libraries, so putting them in the same folder allows it to find them.
There are of course always alternatives!
Static linking
To avoid having a bunch of dlls that have to exist with your application, you could use static linking. You link the .lib files at link-time rather than linking to the .dll files at run-time. Makes your .exe larger, but means you may be able to distribute a single file.
Placing Dlls in a different folder
The dlls do not have to be in the same folder as the .exe, though that normally makes the most sense. Windows will search several folders when looking for a .dll at run-time, so you could put the dlls in the current directory, a system directory (definitely not recommended), or another directory in your PATH environment variable. Actually none of those locations are recommended! Putting them in the same folder as the .exe is the safest, because generally you have control of that folder.

Custom Build Step
I don't like manually putting files in my debug or release folders. I like to think of the debug folder as something I can blow away and rebuild at any time, and I like to have a one-step build process that puts everything where it needs to be so I can easily build on any machine. So I will usually create a custom build step that copies the required .dlls from a "source" folder (in source control) into my output folder.

Why is VisualStudio looking for this lib file? LNK1104 error

We have a large project using VS2008 and boost 1_42. I'm trying to upgrade to VS2010 and boost 1_44. I installed VS2010 and boost 1_44 and converted the project. Now I am trying to build, and everything compiles, but fails when linking:
LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_thread-vc90-mt-1_42.lib'
I have changed the include and lib directories to point to the new boost 1_44 files and I have renamed the old boost 1_42 directory.
Why is the linker still looking for a vc90-1_42 file, when it is only using 1_44 headers? Is there a way that I can determine WHY the linker wants this file? The linker obviously thinks it needs the file, but why?
I have cleaned the project and I am re-building to ensure any old build files are erased.
I've run into exactly this problem a couple of times too. It's usually been some old temporary files but like in your case cleaning didn't always do the trick straight away. Does your project include any static libs that might have been built with 1.42?
Something you can try which may or may not be helpful in tracking down your issue:
Rename the old boost directory back to it's original name
Clean the solution
Under C/C++->Command Line->Additional Options add "/showIncludes"
Under Linker->Command Line->Additional Options add "/verbose:lib"
Rebuild all
Then when you build you'll be able to see at which point 1.42 headers are included, etc. in the output window. Somehow doing this helped me in tracking down where the problem was.
Along with changing the lib directory, you need to change the name of the boost library. That's in the Linker | Input section of the project settings.
Your added comment makes it clear that the dependency on the Boost 1.42 library was being created indirectly by another library that hadn't been rebuilt.
For this you basically have two choices: either add that library as a project to your main solution, and make sure it has enough dependency information that it'll be re-built when you upgrade Boost, or use the /Zl compiler switch when you build your library. This tells the compiler you're building a library so you do not want to embed library dependencies like this.
Boost uses
#pragma comment(lib)
command to inform the linker of libraries it needs to link with. It is not an error. If Boost says you need it, it's likely you do.
On How can I find out why the linker wants this file?
There are programs which will go through your app and dlls/libs and report the content of manifests and what the binaries report they depend on. You could then scan the report for the unexpected libraries being included. We used this mainly to find libs including the previous version of the VC runtime.
Have not used the one we had in about 5 years though, now if only I could remember the name of the app!
DependancyWalker (depends.exe) will allow you to see dependancies of dll/exe but not static libs.
You could open each binary as a 'file' in MSVS and look at the manifest content by hand, but I imaging this would be a bit painful. I've not tried this with a static lib.

How do you pack a visual studio c++ project for release?

I'm wondering how to make a release build that includes all necessary dll files into the .exe so the program can be run on a non-development machine without it having to install the microsoft redistributable on the target machine.
Without doing this you get the error message that the application configuration is not correct and to reinstall.
Choose Project -> Properties
Select Configuration -> General
In the box for how you should link MFC, choose to statically link it.
Choose Linker -> Input. Under Additional Dependencies, add any libraries you need your app to statically link in.
You need to set the run-time library (Under C/C++ -> Code Generation) for ALL projects to static linkage, which correlates to the following default building configurations:
Multithreaded Debug/Release
Singlethreaded Debug/Release
As opposed to the "DLL" versions of those libraries.
Even if you do that, depending on the libraries you're using, you might have to install a Merge Module/framework/etc. It depends on whether static LIB versions of your dependencies are available.
Be aware that Microsoft do not recommend that you static link the runtime into your project, as this prevents it from being serviced by windows update to fix critical security bugs. There are also potential problems if you are passing memory between your main .exe and .dll files as if each of these static links the runtime you can end up with malloc/free mismatch problems.
You can include the DLLs with the executable, without compiling them into the .exe and without running the redist tool - this is what I do and it seems to work fine.
The only fly in the ointment is that you need to include the files twice if you're distributing for a wide range of Windows versions - newer OSs need the files in manifest-defined directories, and older ones want all the files in the program directory.
You'd be looking to static link (as opposed to dynamically link)
I'm not sure how many of the MS redistributables statically link in.
If you are looking to find out which dll's your target machine is missing then use depends.exe which used to come with MSDev, but can also be found here. Testing this on a few target machines should tell you which dll's you need to package with your application.
You should use a static link and add all libraries you need under additional dependencies.
